Another Chance
Renee came to an abrupt halt, her fingers tightening around the phone so much that her knuckles turned white. Her gaze, icy and unwavering, fixed on the figure standing in front of her home–an immobile man, frozen beneath the streetlight.
The light above cast his shadow long across the ground, stretching toward her.
In the past, it had always been her waiting at the door for him to return. Sometimes, she’d wait so long that boredom would creep in, and she’d amuse herself by stepping on her shadow, the childish joy filling her as she waited for him to come back.
Now, their roles had reversed. She saw him standing there, and suddenly, she realized how ridiculous she must have appeared to him back then.
And like him in the past, she felt no sympathy.
Maybe she had been staring for too long. Slowly, William seemed to sense her presence. He lifted his head, and their eyes met–cold, unyielding, locked in a silent confrontation.
He shifted, a slight movement. “Nene.”
Renee didn’t budge. She stood her ground, waiting for him to make his way toward her.
As he drew closer, the strong scent of alcohol hit her. Her brow furrowed as she noticed the car behind him. Had he been drinking and driving?
“You…”
“I need to ask you something,” she cut him off, her voice steely. “Do you know it was
Esme who hit Felix?”
William’s body went rigid, and his face transformed instantly, shock overtaking him.
“You knew?”
A rush of anger surged through Renee. Her eyes, once cold, now burned with fury as she demanded, “So, you knew. William, how could you?”
“Please, let me explain.” He reached for her, his hand outstretched, but she raised hers, stepping back to avoid him.
The indifference in her eyes struck him like a blow, and panic flitted across his features. For the first time, he was afraid–afraid she would slip away again, just like she had for the last three years, leaving him in complete silence, with no word, no sign of where she had gone.
“William, Esme nearly killed Felix! And you expect me to listen to your excuses? You knew all along, yet you kept it a secret. Esme is running from the consequences, and you’re complicit in her crime!”
“Yes, I know,” William said, his voice tight with guilt. “It was my mom’s mistake, and I apologize. I’ll make sure she apologizes to you too. Nene, she didn’t mean it.”
“Then why hide it? To protect your precious family? You’re afraid that if this comes out, it’ll tarnish Eric’s reputation, right? So, you chose to let Felix suffer–abandoning him to die alone.”
“No, it’s not like that…”
“Is your family’s reputation worth more than my son’s life?” Renee’s voice shook with fury. “William, have I been wrong all these years, or did I never really know you?”
She didn’t want to hear any more of his feeble explanations. What could he possibly say now? No matter how he tried to explain, the truth remained unchanged. Esme had hit Felix and then walked away, as if nothing had happened. What if Felix hadn’t been
found? What would have become of him?
The thought sent a chilling wave through Renee.
“Get out!” she yelled, her voice breaking. “Don’t ever show your face to me again! William, I don’t want to see anyone from your family right now, including you!”
But before she could turn away, he grabbed her with such force that pain shot through her body. For a fleeting moment, he was terrified that if he released her, she would vanish from his life again, just as she had for the last three years.
He couldn’t bear the thought of those long, sleepless nights consumed by the aching
void of her absence.
“Nene… I’m sorry… Please. I’m sorry… Sorry… Just… give me another chance, please?”
