Chapter 62 Just A Minor

Accident

“Sylvia!” William’s voice rose, sharp with urgency.

“William, you’ll save me, won’t you?” Sylvia’s eyes locked onto his, her tone shifting from desperation to something more calm and certain.

If he wanted to keep Renee from learning the truth-that Esme was the one who hit Felix-he had no choice. He had to protect Sylvia. Because if he didn’t, she would have no option but to confess.

Renee glanced between them and let out a low, mocking laugh.

William took a slow step toward Renee, speaking carefully. “Nene, we’re in a police station. Let’s leave this to them, alright?”

The interrogation room had turned chaotic. The noise carried beyond its walls, drawing in several officers. The moment they saw Sylvia covered in blood, their faces paled. Hands twitched at their belts. If they let this escalate any further, it could cost them their jobs.

Renee flashed a careless smile at the police officers. “Relax. Just a minor accident.”

A minor accident?

Sylvia glanced down. Her shirt was soaked with blood. The cut on her face wasn’t fatal, but if she didn’t get medical attention soon, there was no telling how bad it might get.

“Ms. Carter, perhaps we should stop here for now. What do you think?” One of the officers spoke, his voice uneasy. “We’ll continue the interrogation later and inform you of any updates immediately.”

Renee flicked her gaze toward Sylvia, and then to William. A sneer curled at her lips.

“Fine.”

Even as she agreed, she lifted her knife and wiped the blood onto Sylvia’s shirt. The room froze. Everyone braced for another strike, breath caught in their throats. Sylvia shut her eyes and let out a strangled scream.

“You’re pathetic, Sylvia. And yet, you had the guts to kidnap?” Renee scoffed. “Next time, face me properly. I won’t stop halfway.”

Sylvia’s eyes flew open just as Renee used her shirt to clean the blade. The knife gleamed once more before disappearing into its sheath.

With effortless ease, Renee turned and sauntered out of the room. As soon as she crossed the threshold, the tension finally broke. A collective sigh of relief followed her exit. William wasted no time and trailed behind, his footsteps echoing in the hall.

At the station’s entrance, she came to a stop and turned. William stood a few paces. away. The moment she halted, so did he. For a second, neither moved.

“Just say what you need to say,” she said, her voice steady.

“I’ll take you home,” said William.

“That’s not necessary,” she replied flatly.

His voice softened. “I don’t want anything bad to happen to you again.”

For three years, he had waited for her return. Now, after everything that had happened,

the fear of losing her again gripped him.

Renee lifted her chin, her expression unreadable. “The only person who wants me dead

is inside. Besides her, who else would have a reason to hurt me?”

“Have you forgotten Ray?”

“Ray who?” She frowned. The name meant nothing to her. No memory surfaced, nothing familiar. As far as she knew, she had never met anyone by that name.

William studied her face. “Ray Fisher. He lived in the same compound back when we

were kids. Small, skinny. The security guard’s grandson.”

A vague image flickered in Renee’s mind. “Are you talking about ‘Mouse’?”

“Mouse” was the nickname other kids gave Ray. He was short and scrawny, kind of like

a mouse. At some point, everyone just started calling him that, and his real name faded

away.

She hadn’t seen him in years. His family had moved away, and that was the end of it. But now William just told her Ray hated her? Why?

William’s gaze didn’t waver. “You might remember him by another name.” He paused,

and then said, “Michael Swain.”
