Chapter 59 Do You Like
Him
“The car accident might not have been an accident at all. During the investigation, we discovered that someone had deliberately erased the surveillance footage. Whoever they are, they have powerful connections,” said Ryder as he called Renee.
Her expression hardened. “I don’t care who they are. I’ll find them, and I’ll make them pay.”
As soon as she spoke, her thoughts drifted to Felix lying in that hospital bed. She had a
mission to complete. Too many visits to the hospital could draw unwanted attention to
herself, and if her target got suspicious, months of effort could go to waste. Sad as she
was, she had to stay away as much as possible.
“How’s Felix? Has he been crying?” she asked, her voice softening without her realizing
- it.
“He’s been sweet as ever,” came the response. “But he’s been talking about some cool guy. Is it William? Did you let them meet?”
A sigh slipped from Renee as a dull headache set in. “It’s a long story.”
Ryder knew better than to push. If she didn’t want to talk, there was no use pressing
her. He had always been good at knowing when to stop. But after returning to Tofral and seeing William in person this time, a sense of unease settled over him.
William was no ordinary man. If he had remained in the army, he might have outshone Ryder’s accomplishments by now.
What a waste of potential, indeed!
Once the call ended, Ryder dialed another number. The moment the line connected, his
friend spoke first. “Perfect timing. I was just about to call you. There’s been a development.”
“What did you find?” Ryder asked.
“The Goodwin family has been interfering with the investigation. More specifically,
Denton, the young heir. We still don’t know if the entire family is involved or it’s just him.”
“The Goodwin family” Ryder’s voice grew cold. “Terrell Goodwin? I see. I’ll handle this and talk to him myself.”
“Alright. But did you call for the car accident or something else?”
Ryder nodded to himself. “I need you to look into someone for me.”
“Who?”
“William Mitchell.”
At the name, his friend sucked in a sharp breath.
In Tofral, sniffing around William was like asking for trouble. He had been a force to reckon with in the army, and later, even as a businessman, his influence hadn’t faded. On top of that, Eric held a high–ranking position in town. Investigating William? No one in their right mind would dare.
But Ryder wasn’t just anyone. “Don’t worry about it. Go ahead and look into him. If anything happens, I’ll take full responsibility.”
Only someone with his level of boldness would take that risk.
“Alright, but I can’t promise much.”
“That’s fine. Just find whatever you can.”
As soon as the call ended, a tiny hand tugged at Ryder’s pinky. When he glanced down, warmth spread through him at the sight.
“Felix, you’re awake. Are you hungry? Want me to feed you?”
Felix shook his head. “Daddy, I’m not hungry.”
O
“Then are you in pain anywhere? Or just bored? How about I put on some cartoons for you?”
The moment he mentioned cartoons, Felix’s eyes brightened. Then, just as quickly, his excitement faded, and a hint of sadness crept onto his face.
Pouting, he mumbled, “But Mommy doesn’t let me watch cartoons. Daddy, can I watch them in secret? Just don’t tell her, okay?”
Ryder let out a hearty laugh. Felix was sharper than he had any right to be, always
playing the part of an obedient little angel only when Renee was around. Where did he get that from?
Shaking his head, Ryder ruffled Felix’s hair. “Alright, I won’t tell her. But first, you have to answer a question.”
“Sure!”
Ryder leaned in slightly. “That cool guy you mentioned–Do you like him?”
