Chapter 57 What Do You
Plan To Do
“Mommy!”
Felix’s eyes lit up with pure joy upon spotting Renee. He made an eager attempt to sit up, but the sharp pain from his injuries surged through him, causing him to wince and
cry out. His small face crumpled into tears.
“Felix…” Renee’s voice was a soothing whisper as she quickly approached, pressing him gently back onto the bed. She clasped his hand, her touch radiating warmth and
reassurance.
“Be good, Felix. Stay still–I’m right here with you, so there’s no need to move too much,
alright?”
Cradled by his mother’s comforting presence, Felix’s sobs gradually subsided. Yet, as the anesthesia’s veil thinned, the throbbing pain from his wounds began to mount. The strange nature of the kidnapping nagged at Renee; they had barely grazed Felix physically. What was their motive? Money seemed unlikely without any prior scrutiny of Felix’s family background. And their recent return to Tofral only deepened the mystery of their immediate targeting.
Was this some kind of personal revenge? Her mind flashed back to her own kidnapping years earlier. It had been Ryder who had rescued her, but the mastermind had remained in the shadows, elusive.
This time, all signs seemed to point to Sylvia. Renee’s suspicion darkened, considering the possibility that Sylvia could be linked to her past ordeal as well.
“William,” she called out sharply, breaking the silence.
William stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “Yeah?”
Despite holding Felix tenderly against her, Renee’s eyes were fierce, her resolve steel.
“If Sylvia is indeed behind this, I will make her regret it. And should you choose to protect her, know that it will be in vain.”
William’s nod was casual, almost indifferent. “Got it.”
Her eyes narrowed, flickering with suspicion as she studied him, her voice tinged with uncertainty. “That’s it? What are you planning to do?”
He responded with a casual shrug, his demeanor radiating disinterest. “It’s not really about what I plan to do–it’s about what you want to do. Your choice, your business. I won’t interfere.”
“Really?” she probed, skepticism lacing her tone.
William nodded, his expression resolute and unyielding.
Renee’s brow furrowed, disbelief etching her features. It was hard to fathom that William was so detached, so seemingly indifferent to Sylvia’s fate.
Was it truly possible for him to be this unconcerned? From the very beginning, Sylvia had meant everything to him–she was always his number one priority.
Just then, the shrill ring of a phone pierced the tense air. William’s hand darted to his pocket, pulling out the device. His face contorted with a flicker of guilt as he saw the caller ID–Esme.
Renee caught the change in his expression and her lips curled in disdain.
Without stepping away, he pressed the phone to his ear, answering the call in front of
Renee.
As expected, Esme’s call was on behalf of Sylvia. Her voice, tinged with urgency, echoed through the phone. “William, you must do something. Sylvia needs our support. I asked your father to dig deeper, but he refused, claiming Renee has changed–she’s not the woman we once knew. What’s the meaning of that? Can she truly defy us and challenge the entire Mitchell family?”
William’s response was measured, his tone laced with resignation. “Mom, let the investigative team manage this. If Sylvia is innocent, she’ll be cleared without our interference. But if she’s guilty, she must face the consequences. We cannot shield her
from that.”
“Are you even listening to yourself?” Esme’s voice cracked with disbelief. She had always cherished Sylvia as if she were her own daughter, her protectiveness now flaring into fury.
“How could you suggest such a thing? The investigation will drag on for days, maybe
longer. Are we supposed to just stand by while Sylvia suffers alone in confinement? She’s not built for this, William.”
“Mom, Dad already told you to back off. Please, just follow his advice this time.”
“He’s become more stubborn with age. He’s simply afraid of crossing Ryder and impacting his own career. You know I’ve always said Renee is trouble, and now…” Esme’s rant was cut short as William abruptly ended the call.
Turning to Renee, who had been silent until now, William shook his head and muttered, “See? Dad’s steering clear of Sylvia’s mess, and so will I. It’s just Mom making a fuss- she won’t get far causing chaos on her own though.”
