Chapter 355 Already Broken Up

Renee jolted awake, her head throbbing with a sharp, relentless pain. The remnants of

a chaotic and surreal dream swirled in her mind like scattered puzzle pieces, impossible to piece together.

“Ms. Carter, we’ve been expecting you.”

my name?”

“Ms. Carter, let’s not make this harder than it needs to be.”

She remembered that several pairs of hands had forced her against the bar counter, their grip unyielding and impossible to break free from!

“What is it that you want from me?” she had asked.

“Hold her down-strip her!”

Was it just a strange dream, or had it truly happened?

Could this be the missing fragment of memory from that night at the bar?

Was this the reason William had been intentionally keeping things from her?

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sudden ringing of her phone.

Turning her head, she saw Barr’s name flashing on the screen.

Still groggy and plagued by the ache pounding in her skull, Renee answered, her mind struggling to catch up. Barr’s voice came through, but his words blurred together as her

focus wavered.

“Ms. Carter, should we continue with the investigation?” His question broke through the haze, cutting into her disjointed thoughts.

That sentence registered clearly. For a moment, Renee was stunned into silence. Barr’s

follow-up words hit her like a jolt-he mentioned that William seemed to be intentionally interfering with their efforts.

Her silence must have concerned Barr because he quickly followed up. “Why not confront Mr. Mitchell about it directly?”

“Okay,” Renee muttered, her voice almost automatic as she ended the call.

She set the phone aside, rubbing her temples in an attempt to bring some clarity to her aching head. Her confusion deepened, and an unsettling unease settled in her chest.

But before she could process anything, her phone rang again. This time, it was Ryland.

The moment she picked up, his frantic voice poured through the line, his urgency palpable. “Renee! Are you alright? How are you feeling?”

Thrown off by his sudden concern, Renee felt her confusion deepen. What on earth could be wrong with her?

Renee, visibly perplexed, pressed her fingers against her temples before saying, “Take a deep breath and explain it to me step by step. What exactly is happening? Like, what in the world could be wrong with me?”

On the other end of the call, Ryland’s breathing was uneven, and his voice quivered with anxiety. “I just found out that Claude used my phone to call you! What did he do? Did he hurt you?”

Renee’s eyes widened in shock as her brows drew together. She hadn’t even considered that Claude could be tied to this!

“That piece of trash! How dare he even think about touching you! Renee, I need you to be honest with me-what exactly did he do? Don’t hold back because of me. Listen, I’ve already cut ties with him! We’re done! He means nothing to me now!” Ryland’s anger flared as his voice grew louder.

Anyone who knew Ryland would testify to the high regard he held for Renee. No one dared to say a single disparaging thing about her in his presence-any attempt would immediately ignite his temper.

But now, it wasn’t just anyone-it was his own partner who had crossed the line and targeted Renee.

How could this feel like anything other than a personal betrayal?

“I… I don’t know,” Renee stammered.

Ryland’s worry deepened, and his voice grew more urgent. “Renee, please, don’t keep anything from me because you’re worried about how I’ll feel. We’re friends and I’ve got you, okay?”

“It’s not about that,” Renee murmured faintly. “It’s… I really don’t remember.”

Ryland faltered, taken aback. “What do you mean you don’t remember?”

Her response was hesitant yet firm. “Exactly what I said. I can’t recall what happened that day. I think… I think someone might have drugged me.”

There was a moment of tense silence before Ryland’s rage erupted. “That bastard drugged you?! He actually had the nerve to do that?! That disgusting, vile-! Renee, don’t worry about a thing. I swear, I’ll make him pay for this!”

His tone left no room for doubt-Ryland was ready to storm off and confront Claude immediately. Alarmed, Renee scrambled to interject. “Please, calm down for a moment!

We can’t just-”

“How can you expect me to calm down?! I’m ready to rip him apart right now! Renee, just leave it to me!” Before she could utter another word, the line went dead. Ryland had hung up in a fit of rage.

Renee stared blankly at her phone, frozen in place.
