Chapter 334 Wanting To Play A Little Risky
“Sorry, Renee. I wish I could’ve done more.”
After the banquet wrapped up, Ryland stepped outside to see Renee off as she climbed into the car. He had done his best to sway Nigel inside, but the old man had been as stubborn as a mule. His first impression of William had been unfavorable, and there was no way Nigel was going to give him
a shot.
“You’ve done a lot. Thank you for today,” William said, his tone sincere as he nodded toward Ryland.
Ryland gave a casual wave, brushing it off. “I didn’t really do anything.”
Beside them, Renee’s face was clouded with frustration. She couldn’t hold back any longer and grabbed Ryland’s arm, her voice firm with resolve. “Ryland, give me Nigel’s address. I don’t care what it takes, I’ll make him listen. I don’t believe I can’t handle an old man like him!”
William quickly stepped in, pulling Renee back. “Renee, you can’t do that.”
Fury flashed in Renee’s eyes as her emotions boiled over. “Why not? If playing nice doesn’t work, we go harder. I refuse to believe I can’t outsmart an old man!”
William shot Ryland an apologetic look.
Ryland chuckled, unfazed. He and Renee had grown up together, so he knew all too well how stubborn and determined she could be.
Renee’s got a short temper. Aside from William and her late grandfather, no one had ever been able to rein her in.
“Let’s go home first,” William said, his voice calm but firm.
Renee wasn’t having any of it. Go home? She was set on confronting Nigel today, no matter what.
When she stubbornly refused to move, William let out a resigned sigh. Without another word, he bent down, scooping her up into his arms and carrying her away with surprising strength.
Ryland, witnessing the scene, struggled to stifle his laughter behind his
hand.
Renee, however, was a mix of embarrassment and fury. Being princess- carried in front of her best friend felt like the ultimate humiliation.
She squirmed in William’s arms, but her tight dress made it nearly impossible to move freely. She hesitated to fight too much, worried that she might rip it in the process.
“William, put me down!” Renee hissed under her breath, her voice barely audible as she feared drawing unwanted attention.
But William acted as though he hadn’t heard a word, carrying her all the way to the car without a second thought. They’d brought a driver today, knowing they’d likely be drinking at the banquet. The moment the driver saw William carrying Renee, he stepped forward quickly, opening the car door with practiced discretion.
Once they were both inside, the driver took his seat and asked, “Mr. Mitchell, where to?”
“Home,” William answered without hesitation.
He wasn’t talking about the Mitchell family’s residence, but their own personal home. The driver, understanding without needing to be told, thoughtfully raised the partition between the front and back seats, giving them privacy.
Renee sat there, momentarily speechless.
Was the driver misunderstanding something?
But as Renee turned her head, she locked eyes with William, his intense gaze sending a jolt through her.
Renee froze. What was he planning?
“How much did you drink tonight?” she asked, her voice filled with
disbelief.
She hadn’t really paid attention, but she could’ve sworn William only had one glass when toasting Nigel.
So why did he look like he was drunk?
William’s voice was rough, hoarse as he tugged at his tie, tossing it aside carelessly. The scent of alcohol lingered in his breath as he spoke, adding to the mystery of his strange behavior.
“Three glasses,” William muttered, his voice thick.
Renee’s eyes widened in disbelief.
How could it be that after all these years, his tolerance hadn’t improved at all? Three glasses, and he was already this far gone?
As William’s gaze grew clouded, his intense eyes never leaving hers, a strange thought flickered through Renee’s mind. Was he seriously thinking of doing something here, in the car?
Sure enough, without warning, William reached out and yanked the front of Renee’s dress toward him. Several buttons flew off, landing with soft clinks against the partition.
Renee was left stunned.
Since when did drunk people have this much strength?
