Chapter 291 The Harsh
Truth
“What is it?” Esme inquired, her voice tinged with curiosity.
Renee shifted her gaze towards Esme, pausing as she carefully selected her words before responding, “It’s about the incident when you hit Felix with your car…”
When Esme heard these words, her expression shifted abruptly, her features tightening in distress. Eric’s face
also darkened, his mood taking a sharp turn.
Esme, her voice quivering with anxiety, spoke hastily. “Renee, I swear I never meant for that to happen. Even now, I wake up from nightmares about it. I nearly… nearly took my own grandson’s life. I feel so guilty, and I can’t even begin to tell you the regret I have…”
As she spoke, Esme’s emotions overflowed, her face contorting with remorse and fear, her tears flowing freely.
“I’m not bringing this up to place blame on you,” Renee said firmly.
Sensing the weight of Esme’s pain, she quickly reassured her, “I’m only telling you this because I believe the accident wasn’t an accident at all. Someone made it happen.”
Renee pulled out her phone, swiftly navigating to the evidence she had gathered before. She handed it to Esme, and Eric also leaned in, his eyes narrowing as he examined the screen.
“This is the proof,” Renee continued. “Your car was tampered with in advance. Someone deliberately led you to that intersection. Take a moment to think about it–who would want to do this? I’m sure you have some idea.”
Esme’s hand shook as she gripped the phone. Her eyes, filled with tears, widened in disbelief as she absorbed
the information on the screen.
Her lips trembled, and tears blurred her vision, but she refused to blink, unwilling to look away from the harsh reality in front of her.
“This… This can’t be real.” Esme’s voice cracked, the weight of the revelation choking her words. “Sylvia… Why would she do something like this? I’ve always treated her like my own daughter. How could she betray me like
this?”
Eric, visibly struggling to contain his fury, exhaled slowly, his voice cold and cutting. “Now do you still want to stop me from sending her abroad? This is the woman you favored, the one you thought could be trusted. If a woman with such malicious intentions married William, she would destroy his future sooner or later!”
Esme sank into the sofa, feeling as if every ounce of her strength had been drained away. Her tears flowed freely, her heart heavy with the crushing weight of betrayal.
Her mind raced through all the moments she had shared with Sylvia, the warm memories now painful

reminders of betrayal. Those memories, once filled with love, now felt like jagged knives, stabbing at her heart.
“Why would she do this to me? I have always treated her like she were my daughter…” Esme muttered, her voice trembling with anguish and disbelief.
“Still thinking of her as your daughter?” Eric snapped, his words sharp. “She nearly killed your grandson!”
The harshness of his words only deepened Esme’s sorrow. Her tears flowed more freely now, her sobs racking her body as she wept uncontrollably.
Renee wasn’t particularly skilled at comforting others. She didn’t know how to comfort Esme, especially since her bond with her wasn’t very close. Being thrust into a situation where she needed to offer comforting words felt like a challenge she wasn’t prepared for.
After a brief pause, she spoke softly. “People often lose themselves when consumed by their desires and
interests.”
Then, she added, her voice gentler now, “The human heart is unpredictable. Perhaps, when faced with those desires, some people forget who they truly are.”
Eric, his gaze steely and determined, wasted no time in issuing a command. “Make arrangements right away.
Get Sylvia sent abroad.”
Esme slowly lifted her head, her eyes still clouded with sorrow, but now, there was a glimmer of resolve in them. “You are right. We should do that…” she said in a low voice.
Before anyone could respond, Eric’s secretary rushed into the room. Noticing the tense atmosphere, he didn’t waste any time with formalities and quickly said, “Mr. Mitchell, something’s happened to your son.”
The room fell into stunned silence, and Renee, her heart pounding with anxiety, immediately asked in an anxious tone, “What’s happened? Is William okay?”
Her mind raced with fear–William had only just recovered from his injuries. The thought of something happening to him again was enough to send a wave of panic over her.
Early that morning, William had gone to the company, and they hadn’t spoken since. She had no idea what had been going on with him.
