Chapter 289 Who Do You
Think You Are
“Why are you down here? Go back upstairs. This doesn’t concern you!” Esme immediately said when she saw Renee.
Renee understood that Esme was only trying to protect her, but still, she couldn’t shake off the uncomfortable feeling.
“I kept hearing a buzzing sound from downstairs and thought maybe there were flies in the house, so I came down to check.” Renee’s tone was calm
as ever.
There was a brief pause as the Mitchell family members processed her words. Then it hit them–Renee had just likened them to flies. The tension in the room skyrocketed, and an outburst of indignation followed.
“Who do you think you’re talking to?”
“How can she speak like that?”
“She has no manners at all! Eric, are you really going to tolerate this?”
“That’s right! Uncle Eric, you are not really involved with her, are you—”
Renee strode up to the young man and, without hesitation, slapped him sharply across the face, the sound echoing through the room.
The sharp crack of the slap cut through the air, plunging the living room into an uncomfortable silence.
A stunned silence fell over the family members, their eyes fixed on Renee, astonished by her action.
The recipient of the slap was William’s cousin.
Renee had deliberately slapped him to make a point.
The young man’s face swelled quickly, turning a deep shade of red. His eyes widened in disbelief as he processed the shock of the slap. Never had he imagined Renee would have the audacity to strike him, and certainly not in front of the entire Mitchell family.
Renee stood tall, radiating an authoritative presence as she spoke in a cold, measured tone. “This slap is a lesson for you. Since you clearly lack basic manners, consider this a lesson in respect. If you continue with your uncouth behavior, you might just find yourself offending someone who won’t hesitate to make you face grave consequences!”
Her words weren’t loud, but they cut through the room with an intensity that left no room for doubt.
For a brief moment, silence enveloped the room, with everyone still processing what had just happened. But it wasn’t long before the relatives erupted in outrage.
“Who do you think you are?” one of them spat. “Do you even have the right to speak like that in front of us?”
“You dare hit him?” another shouted. “Eric, aren’t you going to do something about this?”
Fury blazing in his eyes, the young man who had just been struck charged toward Renee, ready to retaliate.
“Try it if you dare!” Eric’s voice boomed, full of authority and threat.
William, having followed Renee downstairs, moved swiftly to place himself between Renee and the advancing relative, pulling her behind him for protection.
Even Esme stepped forward, her voice sharp and commanding. “Remember where you are! This is our home, and Renee is part of our family. If you plan to cause trouble, you’d better reconsider.”
“Esme, that’s not fair! We are also members of the Mitchell family. We have a right to be here!”
Esme shot him a disdainful glance before responding with a sneer, “I am not related to you by blood! Leave now. If you’ve come to our home to stir up trouble, you’re not welcome. Olivia, escort them out.”
Olivia, who had been silently waiting for the right moment, stepped forward, her voice cold and unwavering. “Please leave, all of you. It’s time for you to go.”
The relatives bristled with anger, their pride wounded by the dismissal.
But deep down, they understood the reality–they had only achieved their success because of the Mitchell family. Without Eric and William, they wouldn’t have reached the heights they had.
Their partnerships had never been about their abilities; it had always been about their connection to the Mitchell family.
Now, with the Mitchells facing trouble, they feared losing everything they had worked for. That was why they were so desperate to turn Renee over, thinking it might save them from the fallout.
But this time, things were different. Eric and Esme were standing firmly in
Renee’s corner, fiercely defending her.
Could it be that the child really was William’s?
