Chapter 271 You Have To Help Him
“Didn’t I tell you to go?”
Renee’s brows furrowed in frustration, her voice firm but with a hint of hesitation. She had planned to be sharper, but seeing the young woman so on the verge of tears again, she hesitated.
With a sigh, Renee decided the matter wasn’t worth her time. But at that moment, to her surprise, the young woman, who had been a bundle of emotions just moments ago, suddenly straightened up, her composure returning. She stood tall, and her eyes turned cold.
So, this was the real her.
Renee’s expression tightened, her eyes narrowing with cold calculation. She remained still, silently waiting to see what the young woman would do
next.
But instead of doing anything, the young woman merely turned on her heels and walked away.
Renee blinked. The young woman just left like that?
Renee was left stunned, unsure whether she had misread the entire
situation. But she quickly dismissed the thought; there was no time for her to dwell on this matter.
Without further delay, she got into her car. Barr had contacted her earlier, mentioning something urgent, and they were supposed to meet at the lakeside park. As she pulled up, she spotted Barr standing by himself, smoking. The moment he saw her, he swiftly stubbed out the cigarette.
Renee quickly approached Barr, holding out her hand.
“Give me a cigarette,” she said.
Barr was slightly shocked, but he complied without protest, handing her a cigarette and lighting it for her with quiet politeness.
Renee took a drag, letting the smoke clear her mind as she took a moment to compose herself.
After a few drags, she exhaled and asked, “So, what did you uncover?”
Barr’s expression shifted instantly. He was all business now.
He said, “Recently, the entertainment industry has been on edge. Ever since Shaun’s arrest, his people have been too fearful to take action. The ones still trying to operate are struggling to find any buyers, and panic is starting to spread. Several of them have already made mistakes, and we’re ready to catch them at any moment.”
While speaking, he pulled out a small notebook and handed it to Renee. “This contains a list of the key players we’ve identified, including their recent activities and any suspicious dealings.”
Renee quickly flipped through the pages, her frown deepening as she took in the long list of names.
“The people behind these individuals are tangled up in complex networks. We have to be careful not to tip them off,” Renee said, taking a long drag from her cigarette and letting the smoke curl around her.
“And about that car accident… I’ve looked into it, too,” Barr said, his eyes meeting Renee’s for a brief moment. “It seems connected to Shaun as well.”
Renee gave a slight nod, her expression calm. “I see.”
The wind by the lake started to pick up, tugging at her hair as she crushed the cigarette under her heel.
Her gaze turned sharp as she added, “Keep watching these people. The
moment they make a move, take action!”
Barr acknowledged her orders, and after discussing a few more details, they went their separate ways.
As Renee got into her car, her phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID displayed Marvin’s name.
Renee’s eyes narrowed instinctively. Knowing exactly why Marvin was calling, she opted not to answer the call.
Silence was the best response.
But Marvin was persistent, calling again and again–three times in a row.
With no other choice, Renee finally answered the call.
Marvin’s voice came through, tinged with desperation.
“Renee… Please… You have to help my uncle. I know this is difficult, but—”
Before he could finish speaking, Renee interjected, “Marvin, if you really understood how difficult this is for me, you wouldn’t even ask for my help.”
Marvin didn’t respond right away, the silence on the line stretching uncomfortably. Renee stood her ground.
“I’m not going to help Shaun,” Renee stated plainly. Her tone carried no room for argument. “Here’s a piece of advice for you–focus on your own survival. You can’t save him, Marvin, so you’d better start thinking about how to protect yourself.”
Her words were direct, almost cutting. On the other end, Marvin still didn’t reply, though Renee could sense the weight of his hesitation.
After what felt like an eternity, Marvin finally spoke, uttering a single word, “Alright.”
And just like that, the call ended abruptly.
