Chapter 270 Baffling
As Renee guided the director and his team out of the room, she couldn’t help but notice how the tension seemed to dissolve as soon as the door closed behind them.
Walking past the nurses‘ station, she overheard snippets of conversation drifting from a small group of nurses gathered nearby.
“Why was Ivory let go?”
“I’m not sure, either. It’s completely baffling!”
“I heard she upset someone.”
“Upset someone? Ivory has always been so kind. Who could she possibly have offended?” one nurse with a ponytail said, clearly confused.
“Maybe she unintentionally offended a patient of high status. Didn’t she keep visiting Mr. Mitchell’s room recently? Could she have done something to upset him?” another nurse said, her voice laced with uncertainty.
“Lula, you are close to Ivory. Do you know anything about it?” a nurse, wearing glasses, asked, her voice tinged with curiosity.
Lula was sorting through medical records, her eyes still swollen and red, clearly showing the signs of her having cried over Ivory’s abrupt departure. When someone spoke to her, she seemed momentarily lost in thought before she slowly turned to face the nurses. “I… I really don’t know. I asked her, but she just wouldn’t say anything about the matter to me.”
Lula and Ivory had started at the hospital around the same time and had worked side by side for quite a while. Lula was well aware that Ivory could sometimes be careless with her work, and that her obsession with marrying into wealth often clouded her judgment. Still, she believed Ivory
wasn’t a bad person by any means.
Listening to the gossip about Ivory, Lula felt a deep sense of internal conflict.
Renee, meanwhile, gave nothing away on her face as she exited the hospital.
She believed everyone had to own up to their actions, after all. And Ivory was no exception.
As Renee walked, someone unexpectedly collided with her.
The path ahead was spacious, and there weren’t many people around, yet somehow, this person still managed to collide with her directly. Renee narrowed her eyes, finding it hard to believe that this was just an accident.
As the young woman frantically apologized, Renee’s face hardened, her voice sharp as she asked, “What exactly are you trying to do?”
The young woman, clearly caught off guard, looked at Renee, her eyes filled with hurt, continuing her apology in a soft voice, “I truly didn’t mean to do that. I’m so sorry.”
At that moment, Renee couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the young woman was, like a porcelain doll. Her voice had a natural sweetness to it, the kind that didn’t sound forced but genuinely soothing.
Renee didn’t want to believe someone so beautiful could be causing trouble on purpose.
“The path is so wide. Was it necessary to bump into me? Were you not paying attention to the road when you walked?” Renee said.
Her tone was firm but not unkind.
To Renee’s surprise, the young woman was so deeply affected by her words that she immediately began to cry.
Without warning, her tears came pouring out, flooding her face as sobs
wracked her body.
It was as if the floodgates had opened–her sobs came in heavy, desperate waves. “I… I didn’t mean it,” the young woman gasped through the tears. “I was just lost in thought, and I didn’t see you. I’m really, really sorry…”
Seeing the young woman’s distressed state, Renee felt a wave of resignation. She waved her hand dismissively, signaling the woman to leave. “Alright, enough. Just go.”
Yet, the young woman didn’t leave. Instead, she grabbed Renee’s hand in a desperate, pleading grasp. “I swear I didn’t mean it! Please forgive me!” Her words came out in a rushed, panicked torrent.
Renee was caught off guard, her mind racing with questions.
What was going on here?
With a trained eye, Renee studied the young woman closely. Beyond the obvious beauty, something about her felt off.
Renee couldn’t help but wonder what was amiss about the young woman.
Then it hit her: the makeup. The young woman’s face was caked with layers of cosmetics that seemed out of place. With her natural features, she would have been stunning, but the heavy makeup made her look almost artificial.
