Chapter 267 Grubbing Up
The Garden
The noise from downstairs persisted.
Renee got up and walked to the window. She glanced down and saw Eric giving orders to some workers, instructing them to dig up the garden.
“Move quickly and finish before sundown!” he commanded.
Because William was allergic to flowers, the garden had never been heavily planted. And since William rarely visited, Esme had only a few plants.
But she had never expected Felix to inherit William’s allergy to pollen.
One of the workers, hearing Eric’s directive, exchanged glances with his colleagues, hesitating.
The workers, who usually assisted Esme with tending the garden, knew just how much she cherished these plants.
“They’re the plants Mrs. Mitchell planted herself…” one of them murmured.
Eric’s tone remained stern. “Do as I say! Dig them all up!”
Reluctantly, the workers picked up their shovels and got to work.
The garden was soon filled with the sounds of shovels digging into the earth and flowers being ripped from their roots.
Just then, one of the workers spotted Esme approaching from a distance and called out, “Mrs. Mitchell!”
Hearing this, the workers paused and looked at Esme, expecting her to tell them to stop.
However, Esme’s voice rang out with certainty, “Thank you all for work! Once you’re done, I’ll have Olivia prepare a big dinner for everyone.” your hard
The workers stood in stunned silence.
No one said a word.
These used to be Esme’s beloved plants, but now, she seemed like she didn’t care about them at all.
After hearing Esme’s words, the workers knew they couldn’t hesitate. They quickly resumed their work, digging with a renewed sense of urgency.
In just a short time, the garden, which had been full of vibrant blooms in the morning, had become a disarray of broken branches and scattered petals.
By the time the sun set, the once–beautiful garden had been stripped bare, leaving behind only a barren patch of earth.
Just then, a gentle hand settled on Renee’s shoulder, drawing her into a warm embrace.
“I’m sorry…” William’s voice, deep and hoarse, resonated softly above Renee.
Renee remained silent.
William continued, “My parents really love Felix. Just give them some time, okay?”
Renee closed her eyes, her thoughts swirling for a moment before she spoke, her voice low. “Felix knows he is allergic to pollen. He is always so careful, so obedient, knowing that if he gets sick, I’ll be worried. I’m often busy with my training and missions, so I don’t have much time to spend with him. He understands that, so when we’re together, he tries not to cause any trouble for me. But today… He approached the flowers.”
William’s voice softened. “He might have forgotten about his allergy to
pollen while he was playing.”
“Yes…” Renee smiled faintly, a touch of sadness in her expression. “He forgot that because he was enjoying himself. He really had fun today…”
Her heart stirred with a bit of pain as she spoke.
She recalled Felix had come into the world after a difficult pregnancy, one that had forced her to balance motherhood with the grueling demands of her job. Just thirty days after his birth, she had returned to her training, learning to juggle the roles of mother and soldier.
Despite the challenges, Felix had grown up strong and healthy.
But as Felix grew, even though she had always been the one constant in his life, now he had more people he loved, a father, a grandfather, and a grandmother…
Renee could see that Felix was genuinely happy here.
“From now on, I’ll let Felix live here,” Renee said.
