Chapter 257 Hang In There
“Sir, you can’t come in at the moment. Please step aside,” the officer said.
Denton didn’t respond, simply turning to look at William. He believed that, in situations like this, William
always knew what to do.
With calm precision, William pulled out his phone and showed the screen to the traffic officer. “I’m here at the request of Captain Rupert Delgado to inspect the scene. If you doubt me, feel free to call him to confirm this,”
he said.
Denton froze for a moment, processing the situation before quickly regaining his composure.
Since William had displayed the screen with such confidence, Denton was almost convinced that William had worked something out with the captain ahead of time. But, knowing William’s usual manner, and the way William had retracted his phone so quickly, Denton began to suspect that maybe there had been nothing on the
screen at all!
“Alright, go ahead,” the officer said, stepping aside with a respectful demeanor, clearly swayed by William’s authoritative presence.
Denton, stunned, struggled to maintain control of his expression.
Once they were far enough from the officer to avoid being overheard, Denton finally asked William, “What did you just show him?”
“Nothing,” William replied.
Denton was left speechless.
He knew it!
“Then why did he let you pass?” Denton asked.
William continued forward, his gaze sharp and focused as he scanned the area for any sign of Renee.
His response to Denton’s question was dismissive, as if the matter was already settled.
“I just looked convincing enough,” he said.
***
“Denton!”
Hearing Ethan’s voice, both Denton and William turned and saw him standing in front of a Bentley.
Upon seeing that William had also arrived, a wave of unease washed over Ethan. As they approached, he
couldn’t even bring himself to meet William’s eyes.
Ethan hesitated and replied, “Who?”
Denton responded, “Renee. Didn’t you say she was the one who hit you?”
At the mention of Renee’s name, Ethan regained some confidence. It wasn’t him who had caused the trouble- it was Renee who had hit him. Why should he feel uneasy? He straightened up in his posture.
“She left! She hit me and then just drove off! Denton, look at my hand!” Ethan raised his swollen hand, displaying the painful sight to Denton.
Ethan’s hand was swollen like a balloon. When Denton saw it, his heart went out to his cousin, but he knew
there was nothing he could do about this.
That was Renee they were talking about! There was no way he could get justice for his cousin.
“Is it painful?” Denton asked.
Ethan nodded frantically. “It hurts so badly…”
Denton’s voice softened. “Hang in there. I’ll take you to the hospital later.”
Ethan fell silent, at a loss for words.
William’s voice, however, was cold and accusatory. “What did you do to her?”
Ethan froze, his mouth hanging open in shock as he stared at William. Truthfully, it was only because the question had come from William, the respected figure in Tofral, that he didn’t immediately snap back.
If it had been anyone else, Ethan would have made sure to put them in their place for asking such a thing.
“What… What could I possibly have done to her? William, look at me! She’s the one who hit me!” Ethan said.
William didn’t even glance at him, his face unchanged. “Nene isn’t someone who acts out without a reason. If you didn’t provoke her, why would she hit you?”
Denton was left speechless.
Only William could say something like that!
Renee wasn’t someone who would lash out for no reason?
He should ask the people who had grown up with them in the same compound–how many of them would agree with that?
Renee had been the leader of the compound since childhood! Wherever she went, a group of followers always
followed her like shadows.
Denton’s eyes flickered to his cousin, who looked pitiful with tears simmering in his eyes. His heart softened in
sympathy.
He said, “Tell us exactly what happened, step by step. Don’t upset William.”
