Chapter 249 Can’t Bear It
Renee dusted off her hands with a sharp, disdainful “humph,” her gaze slicing through the defeated crowd on the floor before landing on Eric. Her voice was icy as she asked, “Now, can I take Felix with me?”
Eric stood frozen, his jaw slack with disbelief.
Esme’s eyes darted between the fallen men and Renee, utterly stunned.
Neither of them could comprehend how Renee had suddenly become so capable, so fearsome.
The skills she’d just displayed left them speechless. Even William, if he had been there, might not have been able to stop her.
Naturally, Renee’s question had been rhetorical. She never once entertained the idea of giving weight to Eric and Esme’s opinions.
In the end, she triumphed over every single one of them.
Her victory left no room for doubt–she was the one in charge now.
Renee strode upstairs with confidence, checking every guest room until she
found the one where Felix was staying.
However, as soon as she pushed the door open, she froze in place, taken entirely by surprise.
The floor was blanketed with cushioned play mats, and instead of a bed, there was a slide positioned near the corner. One side of the room had been transformed into a display of various strollers, while the rest of the space was dotted with an assortment of children’s toys.
It was nothing short of an opulent playroom for children!
This room had not existed before–it was clearly a recent addition.
Based on everything Renee understood about the Mitchell family, there wasn’t a single child in their younger generation who could have motivated Eric and Esme to make such an effort.
The only logical conclusion was that this room had been prepared specifically for Felix. Discovering that Felix was William’s child must have prompted Eric and Esme to arrange for this space to be built, likely in the span of just a night!
Renee remained rooted at the doorway, silently observing Felix as he played. The sight filled her with a mixture of warmth and ache.
Felix should have grown up surrounded by love and abundance from the very beginning. That was what he deserved by right.
But because she chose to leave the Mitchell family, her son had endured so much alongside her.
“Mrs. Mitchell,” Olivia said softly, noticing Renee’s presence and addressing her with respect.
At the sound of Olivia’s voice, Felix turned his head and instantly spotted Renee. His eyes lit up, and without hesitation, he dropped the toy in his hands, sprinting toward her. “Mommy! Mommy! Come and play with me!”
With a room overflowing with toys, Felix’s joy was unmistakable.
Renee’s chest tightened with emotion as she gently ran her fingers through
Felix’s hair.
“Do you like it here, Felix?” she asked him tenderly.
Felix tilted his head to the side, clearly deep in thought, as if the question required great consideration.
“It’s okay, Felix,” Renee encouraged him softly. “Just tell me the truth.”
Encouraged by Renee’s gentle words, Felix nodded enthusiastically, his face
lighting up with a smile. In his sweet, innocent voice, he exclaimed, “There are so many toys here, all my favorites! And Olivia’s food is so yummy–I
love it!”
Renee softly ran her fingers through Felix’s hair, her touch filled with
affection.
People often commended her, calling her a wonderful mother for raising Felix to be such a bright and happy child. Yet deep down, Renee knew the truth–she felt she owed him more than she could ever repay.
Watching Felix’s pure happiness in this moment, Renee felt a swirl of emotions in her chest, unable to bring herself to disrupt his joy.
Then, out of nowhere, Felix wrapped his tiny arms around her neck, hugging her tightly before planting a big kiss on her cheek. “Mommy! But I still want to stay with you!”
Renee’s heart clenched as a wave of guilt and tenderness washed over her. She gently patted his back, pulling him into a warm embrace.
At some point, her little boy–the one who used to babble endlessly and call out “mama” in broken syllables–had grown so much.
Now, Felix wasn’t just older; he was more intuitive, able to read her feelings with a maturity beyond his years.
“If you like it here, Felix,” Renee said softly, her voice steady despite the ache in her chest, “you can stay for now. Once I finish my work, I’ll come back to take you home. How does that sound?”
“Yay!!” Felix squealed, his arms and legs flailing with excitement.
But even in his joy, he didn’t forget to look up at her with serious eyes and remind her, “Mommy, you have to promise! You have to pick me up! I’ll miss you so much!”
“Of course!” Renee replied, holding out her pinky. “Come on, Felix–pinky promise! Mommy never breaks her promises!”
