Chapter 229 We’re Getting Back Together
“Ahem, ahem!” Eric cleared his throat with deliberate emphasis.
William slowly turned away from Renee, his gaze shifting from tender to icy as he faced his parents.
Esme was visibly upset.
The son she had doted on was now pulling away from his own mother, all because of a woman.
“What brings you here?” William inquired, his face void of emotion.
Esme responded, “You’re this injured, how could we stay away?”
Eric huffed audibly. “Humph!”
“What exactly happened? How did you end up in a car wreck? What were you doing at Swenia Mine?” Esme bombarded William with questions.
“The brakes were sabotaged,” William stated flatly.
That revelation sent a shiver down Esme’s spine!
Eric’s eyes widened as he leaned in, urgency in his voice. “How could this happen? Do you know who’s behind this? Who would dare to attack you like this?”
In Tofral, targeting the Mitchell family was akin to poking the bear!
“I’m not convinced it was William they were after! It might have been Renee!” Esme interjected sharply. “I’ve warned you, son! Being with her would only bring trouble! This time you nearly lost your life. What about
next time? Will you be lucky enough to survive again?”
William’s expression darkened, his brows knitting together as he regarded Esme with clear displeasure.
“Mom! If it weren’t for Renee, I wouldn’t be here now! Furthermore, I’ve decided to get back together with Renee. I expect you to at least treat her with the basic courtesy she deserves.”
“You shunned the alliance with the Chadwick family for her! William, where is your ambition?” Eric chided.
But William seemed deaf to his father’s words, his response icy, “If you can’t accept her as your daughter–in–law, then my choice is clear–I’ll leave with her.”
“What?” Eric sputtered, his anger rendering him speechless.
“William, what are you saying? Are we, your parents, really less significant to you than a woman?” Esme asked.
“If you truly cared about me, why force me to choose between you and her?” William countered.
Esme faltered, struck mute by William’s retort.
Eric asserted sternly, “Because she’s not suitable for you!”
“And what constitutes ‘suitable‘?” William challenged, turning to face his father. “Like you and Mom? But are you truly happy? After all these years together, do you even know what the other prefers? You forget each other’s birthdays! Is that what a suitable relationship looks like?”
Eric and Esme were left without words.
Due to Eric’s public stature, he and Esme had presented themselves as the perfect couple for years, though their hearts were far from united. To the outside world, they were a match made in heaven, but behind closed doors, they were nothing more than strangers sharing a house, sleeping in separate beds for decades.
William’s words cut deep. “Dad, Mom, I refuse a life like that! Renee and I share genuine love!”
Esme bowed her head, moved by William’s declaration, yet her stubbornness held. She muttered, “You call it love, yet she had a child with another man. Do you really want to raise another man’s son?”
Just then, Denton burst into the room, excitement painted across his face, waving a file in his hand.
He didn’t pause to acknowledge Eric and Esme but went straight to William, thrusting the document into his hands. “I’ll let the facts speak for themselves. Take a look!”
