Chapter 228 The City’s Most Talked–About Couple
William blinked awake, the harsh white lights above him blurring his vision for a moment. When they cleared, he realized he was in a hospital. It felt oddly familiar–he’d spent enough time in places like this during his time in the army. Injuries came with the job, after all. But this time, something was different. He felt a strange weight in his chest, as if his mind was still in pieces. Everything seemed off, like a chunk of his memory had simply… vanished.
The anesthesia. That was probably it.
He tried to move his hand, but it wouldn’t budge. Something was clasped in his fingers. Looking down, he saw a slender hand curled around his own. His gaze traveled up the arm, finding Renee lying in a bed across from him.
She was still. Too still. He couldn’t tell if she was unconscious or just asleep.
Just as he was about to shift, a nurse stepped in. Her eyes widened when she saw he was awake. “Sir, you’re up! How are you feeling? Any pain?”
William tried to speak, but his throat felt like sandpaper. Instead, he glanced over at Renee, his gaze asking the question he couldn’t voice.
The nurse seemed to catch on immediately. “She’s fine. She just fainted from exhaustion earlier. She’s still sleeping now.”
At her words, William finally exhaled, a wave of relief washing over him.
The nurse smiled softly, continuing, “You were holding her hand so tightly, we couldn’t separate you. We ended up putting you both in the same room
because of it.”
William gave a small nod, acknowledging her words, but his focus never wavered from Renee.
The nurse hesitated, waiting for him to ask about his own condition. But he remained silent, his eyes still on Renee.
Finally, the nurse spoke up. “You’ve got a fracture, but the rest of your injuries aren’t serious. You can rest easy.”
“Thank you,” William said, his voice rough and strained.
The nurse smiled and gave a small nod before exiting the room.
Once she was outside, she let out a long breath, the weight of the moment sinking in.
She had been so nervous. This was a VIP patient, the kind the higher–ups were incredibly particular about–no room for mistakes.
As she walked down the hallway, another nurse on her way to a different room stopped and gave her a playful pat on the shoulder. “What’s going on? Missing your boyfriend?”
The first nurse laughed, shaking her head. “Nonsense. You know I don’t have a boyfriend!”
“Hahaha… I heard you were looking after an important patient. And, well, he’s quite the handsome guy! Aren’t you tempted?”
The nurse felt an urge to cover her colleague’s mouth before the words could escape any further.
She glanced around, relief washing over her only when she saw no one was listening. It felt like narrowly dodging a bullet.
“Don’t say stuff like that! He’s not the kind of guy we can even fantasize about! Besides, he’s got a girlfriend! And she’s stunning. Even when they were both unconscious, they were holding hands so tightly we couldn’t separate them!”
“Wow, really? Tell me everything!” The second nurse’s eyes widened, her curiosity piqued.
By the afternoon, the story of William and Renee’s time in the operating room was the talk of the hospital. Everyone was buzzing about the city’s most talked–about couple–two striking figures with impressive backgrounds and an undeniable bond.
Every detail of their story only fueled the gossip.
Before long, their true identities came to light, setting off an even bigger stir throughout the hospital.
Eric and Esme rushed to the hospital the moment they heard the news. As they stepped inside, they couldn’t help but overhear the hushed conversations about the city’s most talked–about couple. It stirred up a mix
of emotions in them.
When they entered the room, they found their son still holding Renee’s hand, his eyes fixed on her face. The lovesick look on his face made them both pause, a reaction that was hard to ignore.
