Chapter 227 We
Encountered A Problem
“How did the surgery go?”
“Was it successful?”
The hospital director and deputy director moved forward, their eyes filled with expectation.
The head nurse took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. The words she had to speak felt like ice in her veins, but she knew she couldn’t lie. “The surgery… Um, we encountered a problem…”
“What kind of problem?”
“What happened?!”
“Is it critical?”
“Where’s the injury?”
The questions came at her all at once, and the head nurse staggered under the weight of them, her breath catching in her throat. It felt like the air had
been sucked out of the room.
She couldn’t afford to stall any longer. She had to tell the truth. “The anesthesia wore off. The anesthesiologist didn’t dare administer more for safety reasons. The patient kept moving, and the surgeon couldn’t continue, so they sent me to get instructions.”
The high–ranking officials hesitated, unsure of what to do.
“What are we supposed to do?”
“We can’t call for a consultation now; the surgery’s already in progress.”
Just then, a faint voice cut through the tension. “Let me in.”
Everyone turned to see Renee, freshly bandaged, standing at the doorway.
How could they allow just anyone to step into the operating room during surgery?
Despite her injuries, Renee pushed forward, her eyes steady with determination. “I need to go in. I can help calm him down. Please, just let me try.”
The director didn’t hesitate. “Get her a sterile gown, now!”
The tension in the operating room was thick.
Renee entered.
The surgeon and anesthesiologist exchanged confused glances as the head nurse returned with someone. They didn’t have time for questions. They just looked to the head nurse, waiting for an explanation.
The head nurse shrugged, helpless, and motioned for them to see for themselves.
Renee approached the operating table slowly, her hand shaking as it
reached out.
“Hey, you…” the surgeon began, about to stop her, but his words faltered.
The moment Renee took William’s hand, the chaos in him stilled. He went from struggling desperately to completely calm, as if someone had pressed pause on a wild scene.
“Get ready! Get ready!” the surgeon shouted.
The stunned team snapped into action, and the operating room erupted into a flurry of movement.
The anesthesiologist kept dabbing at his forehead, sweat beading with every passing second. But somehow, the patient stayed calm and still, as though the anesthesia had finally kicked in.
Renee never let go of William’s hand, a silent promise to stay by his side.
For the first time, she saw William so fragile. In her eyes, he had always been a hero. A real hero.
He had always been her hero, even though she had never voiced it.
When she found out he’d left the military for her, it crushed her. She felt the weight of his sacrifice–heavy and suffocating.
She didn’t know how long it had been when an unfamiliar voice broke through the tension. “The surgery was a success.”
Renee stood there, stunned, her mind struggling to catch up with the words, until the head nurse gently touched her arm.
Slowly, she lifted her gaze. “What… what did you say?”
The face before her blurred, and the words felt delayed, as if they were out of sync with the sound.
“Miss, the surgery was a success!”
The room erupted in applause, the team’s relief echoing through the air. Though it wasn’t the hardest procedure, it had felt like the most nerve- wracking of all.
“We did it–it’s a success!”
The surgery was a success.
Wait! What surgery? Renee’s thoughts scattered, a blur of confusion.
Oh, right. William’s surgery.
It was successful! That was incredible! William would be fine!
A small smile flickered across Renee’s face, but in the next instant,
everything went dark as she collapsed.
