Chapter 214 Who’s Getting
Married
As soon as they stepped off the boat, Denton’s phone buzzed. He answered, his expression neutral at first, but whatever was said on the other end made him glance curiously at William.
Meanwhile, Renee was on a call with her Juliet. Felix hadn’t seen his
mother in two days, and he was throwing a bit of a tantrum. Luckily, he
was a reasonable kid—his protests never escalated into full–blown chaos.
“Be good, Felix. Mommy will be back soon! Then we can play chess together, okay?”
Lately, he’d become obsessed with chess. The two–year–old had spotted a match on TV and, for reasons beyond Renee’s understanding, immediately latched onto it.
The problem? She had no idea how to play. So, like any determined mom, she searched up the rules and learned alongside him. It turned out that young minds really did work faster–because once Felix got the hang of it, he was good. Too good.
After losing over a dozen games in a single night, Renee had had enough.
Her pride could only take so many defeats at the hands of a toddler.
The moment Renee agreed to play with him, Felix’s mood did a complete 180. Just like that, her unexplained two–day absence was forgiven.
Renee exhaled in relief, warmth spreading through her chest at the sound
of his cheerful voice.
After hanging up, she turned–just in time to hear Denton say to William,
disbelief written all over his face, “You’re getting married?”
Though it was phrased as a question, his tone left no room for doubt.
William’s frown deepened. Clearly annoyed, he shot Denton a sharp look “What the hell are you talking about?”
Renee stayed quiet, watching the exchange unfold.
Denton, still oblivious to her presence, held up his phone. “My dad just told me your wedding is tomorrow! How is it that you’re the groom, and you don’t even know?”
William’s frown deepened as his gaze shifted to Renee. He took a step toward her.
Only then did Denton realize she was there. His posture stiffened, and he stammered, “Renee… it’s–it’s not what you think, it’s…”
Renee let out a quiet chuckle, her eyes locked onto William’s, searching for
answers.
“Denton, you don’t need to explain,” she said calmly. “Let him.”
She wanted to hear the truth from William, not secondhand excuses.
William didn’t hesitate. “Yes, there’s a wedding–but I never agreed to it. My parents arranged everything behind my back. They set up this engagement with Miss Chadwick without even asking me.” His voice was firm, urgent. “I’ve refused from the start. I just didn’t think they’d go through with it anyway. But, Nene, listen to me—I won’t be at that wedding
tomorrow.”
Renee held William’s gaze, her expression unreadable.
When Renee had looked into Eric before, she had uncovered a few troubling things. Now, seeing the man pushing ahead with this wedding— even without William’s consent–it was clear Eric was getting desperate.
“It’s okay,” Renee said with a smile.
William’s frown deepened.
Denton opened his mouth, ready to defend William, but Renee cut in with a laugh. “Since you’re the groom, how could you not be there? Go ahead- I’ll come too.”
Denton blinked, speechless.
William, frustrated, took a step closer. “Nene, I swear I didn’t agree to this marriage. You have to believe me.”
Renee nodded, her smile light, almost innocent. “I do believe you. I’m not asking you to go and say ‘I do.“” She tilted her head. “Just to watch the show.”
“Renee, you…” Denton hesitated, clearly confused. He couldn’t tell if she was upset or if she had something else up her sleeve.
She turned to him, her expression unreadable. “Denton, you should go too. It’d be a shame to miss out on the fun. In fact, everyone should go.” Then, her gaze shifted. “Ryland…”
Ryland, who had been trailing behind without a clue about what was happening, perked up at the sound of his name. He hurried over. “Renee, what’s going on?”
She flashed a playful smile. “We’re going to a wedding tomorrow.”
Ryland blinked in surprise. “Wait–who’s getting married?”
Renee tilted her head, pretending to think it over. “Who knows?” She grinned. “Guess we’ll find out when we get there.”
