Chapter 203 Betraying A
Friend
“Uncle Shaun.” In his urgency, Marvin forgot to knock, pushing the door open to Shaun’s room. “Didn’t you say Renee was already on board? Why can’t I find her anywhere? And William is missing too!”
Shaun’s expression immediately hardened.
If Marvin had been paying closer attention, he might have seen Shaun discreetly slip a jade pendant into his drawer as he barged in.
“They’re missing? So what? It’s not like they’re essential to us,” Shaun replied nonchalantly, his voice cool and detached.
Marvin stared at him, disbelief written across his face. “What do you mean by that?”
Shaun remained unmoved, not responding to Marvin’s questioning.
“Wait… Has Renee really boarded the ship?” Marvin pressed. “Marvin, you’re young. You don’t understand that sometimes things are never as simple as they seem.” Shaun finally spoke, his tone a little sharper.
Anger flared in Marvin’s eyes. He couldn’t accept how indifferent his uncle had become.
Marvin had always considered Renee a friend, but here was his uncle- someone he respected deeply–seemingly indifferent to her life!
“Uncle Shaun!” Marvin’s voice cracked with frustration. “I’m asking you! Renee didn’t get on the ship, did she? You knew all along, didn’t you? And you had your assistant lie to me, didn’t you?”
It was the first time Marvin had raised his voice in anger at Shaun,
something he’d never done before.
Even when Shaun and Jarrod had their disagreements in the past, Marvin had simply stayed quiet, accepting things as they were because they were family.
Shaun ignored him, his focus entirely on his work.
Marvin’s anger boiled over. He slammed his fist onto the desk, frustration pouring out.
“Why does it have to be like this? Why? You have to order the ship to turn back immediately! We have to find Renee! That island–there’s no signal, and no boats will come to her rescue! She will die out there!”
Shaun didn’t seem affected at all. He frowned at Marvin, as though he were a child throwing a tantrum over a toy.
The dismissive look only made Marvin’s rage grow.
Shaun, with the air of an older, authoritative figure, coolly responded, “You really should just drop it. Marvin, you’ve become increasingly disobedient lately.”
“Uncle Shaun!” Marvin shouted, his voice trembling with a mixture of pleading and fury. “Renee is my friend! Please, just order the ship to turn back! Save her!”
Despite his pleading, Marvin’s attitude was still assertive, not softening in the slightest.
Since childhood, Shaun and Jarrod had spoiled him. He’d grown used to getting what he wanted with a few whines or tantrums.
He expected the same treatment now.
But instead of yielding, Shaun pressed the intercom, his voice calm as he instructed, “Send in a few security guards.”
Marvin was momentarily confused, thinking Shaun was finally going to
give in and send the ship back. But then he noticed the detail–Shaun had specifically called for security guards.
When four guards entered, Shaun calmly ordered, “Tie Marvin up and lock him in his room. Don’t let him out until we dock.”
Marvin’s shock was immediate.
He struggled against the guards, his protests growing louder.
“Uncle Shaun! What are you doing?”
“Take some time to reflect on yourself, Marvin. You’re no longer a child. It’s time you learned to consider the consequences of your actions.”
“Consequences?” Marvin shouted, his voice raw. “What consequences? What’s there to weigh when it comes to betraying a friend? Uncle Shaun, let me go! Let me go!”
