Chapter 199 A Capable Wife
Renee walked ahead, cheerful and light, while William followed. A smile playing on his lips as he watched her.
Suddenly, Renee froze, her body going rigid.
William sensed something was off and quickly caught up to her.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice soft.
Her gaze drifted downward slowly.
He followed her stare but saw nothing out of the ordinary–it was just grass beneath her feet.
As he bent down, ready to investigate, she gently pressed her foot harder into the grass.
“Something feels off…” she murmured, her voice soft and unsure.
William crouched down, parting the grass with his hands for a closer look, but found nothing out of place.
She stepped aside, her eyes suddenly gleaming with excitement as though she’d made a discovery.
“Could this be some hidden treasure? Step here and see,” she said, her voice bubbling with excitement.
Though he didn’t believe in treasure, he humored her and stepped where
she indicated.
His expression shifted instantly.
“There’s something under the grass,” he observed, his voice sharpening slightly.
She knelt down, using her hands to pull back the grass. It then uncovered a sheet of metal beneath. It seemed she had stepped on a particularly thin patch, which was why she had noticed something was off.
She dug around the edges, discovering the grass surrounding it was much thicker. The more they dug, the larger the metal sheet appeared to be. William fetched two sturdy branches, and together they kept digging.
They had uncovered an area about a meter long and half a meter wide.
“What is this? It feels hollow underneath,” Renee murmured, puzzled.
The metal was thick, and when she tapped it with a stone, it rang with an echo.
This island was rarely visited, yet here they were, uncovering such a large sheet of metal, possibly covering a man–made cavity. It was definitely strange.
Both of them had an almost instinctive ability to notice the unusual, and it was clear from the start that this was no ordinary discovery.
They exchanged a look, silently agreeing to dig deeper.
“Let’s work around the edges to find its boundary,” he suggested.
The wind blew fiercely as they dug, their movements steady and focused. After about ten minutes, they uncovered the full extent of the metal sheet –it was far larger than they’d imagined.
“Should we try lifting it and see what’s underneath?” he asked, his voice tinged with curiosity.
She nodded, her anticipation obvious.
He looked at her with a doting smile, and then gently tugged her behind him. “Leave it to me. It’s something a man should do,” he said, his tone a
mix of protectiveness and reluctance.
Renee was momentarily lost for words.
Ever since William had confessed his feelings, she couldn’t shake the feeling that he was a different person. Sometimes, he could be so… cheesy.
Not that she minded.
The large metal cover was so heavy that it took considerable effort to lift. Using the branches as levers, William slowly pried it open, revealing a deep well beneath.
Renée leaned over to peer down, her eyes catching a small door at the bottom–a door leading to the unknown.
“Is it a secret passage? Why would someone dig a secret passage here?” she wondered aloud, her voice full of curiosity.
William, just as puzzled, suggested, “Let’s go down and check it out.”
“But… shouldn’t we get back to the boat? What if they start looking for us?”
“We’ll be quick. If anything’s off, we’ll come back later,” he assured her.
With his encouragement, she made up her mind and jumped down before he could even stop her.
He had planned to jump first, ready to catch her on the way down.
Having such a capable wife… wasn’t always as great as it seemed…
