Chapter 183 They Were In This Together
As Shaun and his group drew closer, William quickly pulled Renee into a nearby storage room to hide. The space was cramped, cluttered with various items, forcing them to practically press against each other.
The sudden proximity made him hesitate for a moment, but he couldn’t resist pressing a soft kiss to her hair. Renee, however, didn’t notice; her attention was fixed on Shaun and those with him outside.
“Orlando?” she murmured, her brow furrowing.
Standing just behind Shaun was Orlando, the Chief Inspector of the Tofral Police Department.
So they were in this together?
“Mr. Doyle, what do we do now? Who would have thought they’d be this bold?”
Orlando wiped the cold sweat from his brow, still shaken from the close call.
A stray bullet had just narrowly missed him, and the terror of escaping death still clung to him. He held onto Shaun, who, at the very least, had a few bodyguards by his side.
Though, honestly, those bodyguards weren’t of much help. The idea of being protected still soothed him.
“Relax,” Shaun said, his voice calm. “As long as they don’t find anything, they’ll leave. We’ve called the police. Once they hear sirens, these cowards will scatter.”
But before the words had even fully left his mouth, a gunshot shattered the silence outside.
Bang!
The bullet sliced through the air, aimed straight at Shaun. His bodyguards, for once, earned their paycheck, yanking him out of harm’s way just in time. The group scrambled for cover.
“Step out now, and I’ll let you live,” the attacker called out, voice sharp and unwavering.
He clearly had no idea who he was dealing with–just another thug looking for an easy hostage.
Peering through the narrow gap in the door, Renee caught a glimpse of Shaun’s face.
Unfazed. Even after the near miss, he barely blinked, his calm unshaken. His bodyguards, weapons at the ready, didn’t waste a second.
Gunfire tore through the night, each shot echoing like a warning.
The fight was short and vicious.
From the sound of it, there were only two attackers–and they never stood
a chance. Shaun’s men took them down fast.
“Third floor. Now,” Shaun ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument.
The group moved, swift and disciplined.
As the chaos outside settled, Renee finally lifted her gaze to William. His dark, searching eyes locked onto hers. He swallowed hard under the weight of her stare.
For a moment, she was at a loss for words. Then she found her voice. “What do you think you’re doing?”
She tried to pull away, but his grip remained firm. Her heart pounded. How
could he be this oblivious?
“Let go…”
“It was an accident,” he murmured. “You have to understand.”
Words failed her again.
After a tense beat, he finally released her. “Let’s go.”
Stepping out of the storage room, they were met with the sight of the two fallen attackers, their bodies sprawled across the floor.
Renee’s steps slowed as a thought clicked into place. She grabbed William’s
arm.
He stopped, glancing back at her.
She pointed at the bodies, eyes glinting with an idea. “Should we take their
clothes?”
He caught on immediately, and his expression shifted. Clever. But also… unexpected. He was still wrapping his head around this new side of Renee.
The old her would have cringed at the idea of wearing secondhand clothes, even freshly washed ones–let alone stripping them off of dead men.
While he stood there, lost in thought, she had already crouched down, working fast. In no time, the bodies were stripped down to their underwear. She grabbed one by the ankles, ready to drag him away.
William snapped out of it and stepped in. “Let me.”
Renee let go without a word. By the time William hauled both bodies into the storage room, he turned back–only to find her already dressed in one of the men’s outfits, a mask covering her face.
Something about seeing her in another man’s clothes rubbed him the
wrong way.
