Chapter 144 Let Her Go
Within two hours of Renee’s disappearance, Barr sensed something was wrong. After multiple failed attempts to reach her, he wasted no time–he called Ryder.
The moment Ryder heard the news, he acted. He immediately tracked Renee’s location and sent the pin to Barr
while assembling a team to back him up.
“Keep me updated on everything. No matter what, make sure she’s safe,” Ryder ordered.
Barr, still uneasy, hesitated before asking, “Mr. Chadwick, aren’t you in an important meeting?”
“It doesn’t matter. Nothing is more important than Renee.”
The second Barr received the address, he set off with Ryder’s team, racing against time.
Renee’s last known location led them to a private mine. But the moment they arrived, they were met with an
obstacle–armed guards stationed at the entrance.
No pass. No access.
“What’s the plan, Barr? Should we force our way in?”
“No.” Barr’s eyes stayed locked on the entrance. “We don’t know the layout inside. Even if we break through, we’ll be blind to whatever traps or reinforcements they have waiting. There might be more traps. First, let me
check who owns this mine.”
He quickly pulled out his tablet, fingers flying over the screen. Seconds later, his expression darkened
“What’s wrong?” one of the team members asked, catching the shift in his demeanor.
Barr exhaled sharply, his voice heavy with unease. “The Mitchell family owns this place.”
“The Mitchell family? As in Mayor Mitchell’s family?”
“Yes.”
“This complicates things. But if we go straight to the mayor, we might be able to get permission,” the team
leader muttered.
Barr clenched his jaw, his gut telling him it wasn’t that simple. “That won’t work. Ms. Carter and the mayor’s son have a history. If he’s the one behind this, there’s no way we’re getting her out just by asking nicely.”
Barr always knew William wanted Renee back. So did he actually kidnap her after she had refused him?
“So what now?”
They were at a standstill.
Barr weighed his options, and then made a decision–he called Ryder.
Ryder was in the middle of a high–level meeting when his phone buzzed. Without hesitation, he stood up and walked out, ignoring the curious glances from his colleagues.
“What’s going on?” he asked, already frowning.
Barr quickly laid out the situation.
Ryder’s expression darkened. He had suspected William’s involvement, and hearing this only solidified his
concerns
“I’ll take care of it,” he said curtly before ending the call.
Without wasting a second, Ryder dialed William’s number. William answered almost immediately. Seeing Ryder’s name on the screen made his shoulders tense.
“Mr. Mitchell,” Ryder’s voice was cold.
“Mr. Chadwick,” William replied cautiously. “What can I do for you?”
Ryder didn’t waste time. “Let Renee go.
William’s brows furrowed. “What?”
Ryder wasn’t buying his confusion. “Drop the act. If you don’t release her, I’ll come to Tofral and handle this
myself.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb. I said–let her go.”
“What happened to Renee?”
William’s voice held genuine alarm, making Ryder pause slightly. Given William’s stature, there was no reason for him to fake ignorance. Ryder’s suspicion deepened.
“The Swenia Mine belongs to your family, doesn’t it?”
“Yes.”
“Renee’s last known location was there. Her phone’s dead. I have every reason to believe she’s in danger.”
William’s expression darkened, his demeanor suddenly serious. Without a word, he snatched up his coat and headed for the door, his voice steady but urgent as he instructed his assistant, “Get me the details on what’s happening at Swenia Mine, immediately.”
