Chapter 111 Did You Try To
Make A Move On Him
“Which one is Shaun Doyle?” Renee asked quietly, her voice barely above a whisper as she leaned closer to Ryland.
Ryland scanned the room, his eyes finally landing on a middle–aged man. He gave her a subtle nod in his direction and replied, “That one over there. Why? Are you thinking Roof meeting him?”
Following his gaze, Renee’s attention was drawn to the well–built figure of the man. He was in his mid–forties but looked youthful and fit, his appearance radiating the kind of strength and poise that typically attracts admiration from younger women. His presence oozed a quiet authority and sophistication.
Renee’s purpose for attending the event was clear in her mind–she needed to get closer to him. The information she’d gathered suggested that Shaun was the potential mastermind behind the smuggling of the dangerous drug U2 into Tofral. She had to gather enough evidence to expose his illegal activities.
“Is he single?” she asked, keeping her tone casual.
Ryland nodded, his lips pressed together with a touch of regret. “I’ve never heard anything about him being with a woman. Honestly, I even thought he might have a thing for men, but it seems I was mistaken.”
Renee tilted her head slightly, eyeing Ryland’s expression. “How do you know that? Did you try to make a move on him?”
Ryland’s cheeks flushed a little, and he lightly punched her in the arm, embarrassed. “Come on, don’t be so blunt about it. It was just a casual invite, nothing serious. But he wasn’t interested.”
“So, he’s not interested in either men or women. What exactly does he want then? Money? Power?” she probed further.
Ryland sighed and answered, “He has both.”
Renee raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. “But he isn’t the first–in–line heir to the Doyle empire, is he?”
“Yeah, he’s not. It’s his nephew, Jarrod. They fought bitterly for it, but in the end, Jarrod won, and Shaun was exiled. But within a year, he came back and founded River Group,”
“That fast? It sounds like there’s more to his story than meets the eye,” Renee said, more to herself than to Ryland.
“What do you mean?” Ryland asked, intrigued,
Renee didn’t respond immediately, and Ryland pressed on, his curiosity growing, “Why are you suddenly so interested in him? Don’t tell me you’re actually considering asking him out. He probably won’t be interested.”
“Why not?” Renee asked, her voice steady as she faced Ryland’s teasing remark..
“Did you forget?” Ryland raised an eyebrow before flashing her a smirk. “You once had an altercation with Marvin, Shaun’s another nephew. It’s curious, though–despite the fierce rivalry between Shaun and Jarrod over the family inheritance, Marvin somehow managed to stay in both of their good graces.”
Renee paused, trying to recall the details of the confrontation with Marvin. She couldn’t remember the specific incident, but she had dealt with enough people in the past that it hardly mattered. What she did know was that Shaun held Marvin in high regard. That gave her a lead. Starting with Marvin was a good strategy.
“Arrange a meeting with Marvin. Keep it casual, and just make sure he’s involved,” she instructed Ryland, her tone businesslike.
Ryland, eager to comply, nodded without hesitation. “Understood.”
After finishing her drink, Renee passed both her empty glass and William’s jacket to Ryland. She said with a nonchalant grin, “I’m heading out now. You can return the jacket to William, or if you feel like it, toss it in the trash bin.”
The very suggestion made Ryland shudder. He would never dare do that, not even if he were paid to.
“You’re leaving already?” he asked, his voice betraying a hint of surprise.
“Yes, I have other things to take care of,” Renee replied breezily, waving as she turned to leave.
Her mind was set. She needed to slip into William’s place before he returned and
quietly got rid of the paternity test results. She couldn’t let him discover that Felix was his son–not yet, not until everything was in place.
As she made her way to the door, her eyes caught a familiar sight. A young woman was being pushed toward an elevator by a heavyset man. The forcefulness of his actions and her reluctance was evident.
Rosa? What was she doing here?
