Chapter 6
RUBY DOUGLAS
“It’s just a girl!”
“Holy fuck. Is the girl alright?”

Two voices yelled out to each other, a deep sigh accompanied the question all filling my ears from where I lay tensed and shaken on the forest floor.
I’d chosen to ditch the truck I rented to use a more subtle route in the dense forest of the Pack to sneak out of the borders. Anything to escape the scrutinizing border patrol team.
My backpack lay a few inches from where I toppled over, and I watched with dread as a blond frightful–looking dude with towering height bent over picking up the backpack before he reached my quivering frame.
He looked terrifying and brute. To think he’d just shot at me. A bullet I narrowly escaped.
“Who the fuck are you?” He growled, his claws out and eyes blazing with rage.
His accent instantly added up, almost the same as Gavin’s. No doubt he was a part of the king’s troops securing the borders.
Two more security men darted around to have me on my feet. Commanding, I held my hands above my head.
“I’m Ruby,” I croaked, “I don’t mean any harm, please don’t hurt me!”
The handsome blond dude narrowed an intrigued brow at me, his eyes searching the shirt I wore making me instantly aware I still wore Gavin’s shirt and shorts. And his sweet scent still lingered on the fabrics.
His claws instantly disappeared, and he heaved the backpack from the ground, going through the content. The amount of money I had there and the few items I stole from Gavin rendered me weak to my bones.
“Bring her!”
He commanded and turned back out of the narrowed trail and in no time, we made it out of the forest towards the Pack’s
watch tower.
My fears centered around meeting Gavin. I deserved to die this time. There certainly was no way out of this pack. Certainly, no way to escape the king’s fury.
My heart thumped erratically when the contents of my backpack were emptied on a rectangular steel desk in a small room of the tower.
The telephone on the table rang before the handsome dude could say his words. I sat in opposite directions observing him in the lights, thinking just how handsome he appeared.
“Second floor.” He spoke calmly into the phone.
I heaved myself to face Gavin but when Nathan stormed into the room, I knew this was the end of me.
“You fucking…” Nathan struck my face and went silent. “My apologies, Kirk.” Raising his hand for a second strike, Kirk intercepted a fatal blow urging him to keep calm.

Nathan hissed, cursed, and stormed back out of the room. Kirk’s eyes danced back to me.
“Do you need some water?”
I shook my head, “I need to get away, please!” I began to sob. “Gavin’s going to kill me.” I met his slightly widened gaze and instantly amended my words, “King Gavin.”
“No doubt you stole all of these from him. Why?”
He moved over to pour me a glass of water. Just then, I heard the all–familiar footsteps, the distinct heartbeat I knew so well. Gavin just arrived.
“Please don’t let them hurt me.” I sobbed extremely afraid, “I didn’t mean to hurt anyone. I just want to get away and be happy.” I spluttered saying anything that came to my mind, an attempt to seep into his compassion.
The door went open and just as expected, Gavin stood by the door, his face and stance passive.
His inscrutable gaze didn’t wander my way; instead, they were on Kirk’s face, “Gather records and send them over to Drew, I need to look at them in two hours.”
Kirk nodded stiffly and moved towards the door which Gavin walked in from. In less than a second I was left alone with the ruthless King of the kingdom. Left alone to face the music.
His eyes rested on me as though searching, waiting for what I had to say in my defense. Just as usual, there was not a good enough reason to give for stealing. And trying to escape the pack.
We stood in the most painful silence of my life. His gaze heavy on me while mine was on the glass of water Kirk dropped before me on the table. Heart thumping frantically. Frightfully.
“You know the laws of this territory?”
He spoke, his tone was softer than I’d expected them to be. He reacted differently than I’d imagined. This unnerved me.
Silence accompanied his question. Who didn’t know the laws governing this pack? I scorn mentally, my lips crimped defiantly.
“I didn’t imagine you to be this ugly!”
Well, I was just a lowly runt. Being called ugly didn’t faze me, people around here called me ugly more than they said my name. Thief was the next word.
I didn’t care.
I wished I didn’t care.
He started towards me which made me take wary steps back until my back bumped and pinned against the wall. I stared in fascinated horror as his red eyes darkened ominously, the ridges of his neck grew dangerously pronounced to think he was just an inch away from me.
I flinched when he flailed his hand in the air, waiting, bracing myself for the blow that never came. Instead, his thumb softly cradled my jaw, soothing the burning sensation from Nathan’s assault.
“Who did this?” He cooed.
I tugged my chin from him, not welcoming how sexually aware I instantly grew about our proximity. Not loving the effect his touch had on my knees and pulses.
I should’ve been afraid of how badly he would punish me for stealing and not grow this excited, aching to close the distance between our bodies, to feel more of his touch.

His thumb lazily found my lips, stroking with feathery movement at my lower lip. His raspy breath fanned my face.

The way my wolf reacted to him made it hard to snap out of the sensuous hold he had on me. The need to pounce on hims and devour every inch of him should’ve warned me to back away. This man wasn’t the type to play these games with Games I had no clue of
“Your actions are very ugly Ruby.” He cussed and added, “Distasteful”
He didn’t make any attempts to seal our lips or anything to suggest in his features he aimed to make me pool in the thons 1 wore. Or the prickles that relentlessly needed to be quelled.
“Gavin,” I stuttered, not caring what my crime and punishment were, all I cared about was easing the heat surging through all the right places in me. “Kiss me.”
