Chapter 20
Chapter 20
RUBY DOUGLAS
“Are you still mad at me?”
I asked Drew hoping to start a conversation that would deepen into making him forgive and forget what happened a few days ago.
He still brewed anger and resentment because he acted like I wasn’t in the car. His attention solely on his phone, face grim.
“I’m sorry I took the money but I promise it’s never going to happen again.”
No word came from him.
“Can I make it up to you?”
No reply.
I gave up.
My mind shifted to reasons why Gavin was taking forever inside the training ground. If he confronted Nathan then, it wasn’t good. Not for me.
“Do you think…”
“Could you knock it off?” He barked, irritation twinkling at the edges of his brown eyes.
“I’m sorry, okay?” I cooed. “It’s never going to happen again.” I reiterated.
Gavin’s redhead popped out of the exit, his shoulders squared and face inscrutable making it hard to guess what happened back in there.
He heaved beside me in the backseat and the chauffeur revved the engine.
His cold shoulders made it hard to probe what happened back in there and if he confronted Nathan.
“Thank you.” I started, seeking a loop to jump into to get all my questions answered.
“Whatever for?”
His tone frightened me into going absolutely quiet.
The temptation to glance his way became one I couldn’t resist, at least, to catch an expression on his face.
There was an expression. Disgust?
“You didn’t have to offer me a ride.” If he was going to act like I came straight out of a garbage bag.
He gave me a cursory glance before he returned to his phone. I listened with attentiveness to his thoughts, wanting to know what he thought of me deep down. But just as often, Gavin’s thoughts were void.
Either he bore no thoughts or he’d shut me out of his mind. He possessed a strong wolf so the latter had to be the case.
“Be prepared, we head out to the control room in fifteen minutes,” Gavin informed me when the chauffeur slowed the car to a halt outside the mansion.
He stepped out of the car and took quick strides to the threshold.

Chapter 20
“What’s the control room?”
Drew ignored my question and got out of the car towards his apartment. Did he not know the word forfprenest
I sprinted inside to find Gavin in the kitchen, Hannah fetching him a glass of water from the dispenser
“Leave it on my desk.” He commanded his housekeeper and turned out of the kitchen.
“You don’t have to leave. I’ll leave instead,”
I’d figured he was leaving because I came in. He kept his distance lately and I didn’t want to push boundaries, afraid of his outburst.
Gavin didn’t stop, he strolled casually, towards his room. I trailed him, unsure of the reason why. Like a moth to a fiery flame, I was aimlessly drawn to this virile man.
He paused on the stairs and regarded me. His expression was hard to read. His eyes convey the question, “What do you want?”
“Are you mad at me?” I added, extremely nervous just to anticipate his response.
Just as expected, none came. He started in his tracks again.
“Did you confront Nathan?”
He glanced over his shoulder at me but didn’t stop moving.
“He wasn’t the one who hurt me.” I lied, but for a reason. I needed to know that when Gavin was gone from this Pack, my safety was intact. “You can’t always fight my battles,” I said random things that came to my mind just to keep the conversation–the one–way conversation going.
He got into his room and literally slammed the door in my face.
Nineteen more minutes I came down all freshened up in a velvet dress and my hair swept into a beautiful bun teasing two tendrils down my jaws.
Gavin was waiting by the Bentley parked outside, he looked pissed.
“Did I tardy?” I asked with a sweet smile hoping to lighten the air between us.
“You’re not going to keep irritating me.” He muttered.
“Why do I have to attend this meeting anyway?” I dragged in a breath, “I’m useless to you.”
“This isn’t a meeting.” He cocked his head toward Drew, “You’re going to work with Drew to get the information I want.” He took bold steps towards me. His eyes speared mine, his fresh, delicious scent making it hard to breathe.
I swallowed hard and watched him stop a few inches from me. Not getting as close as I had imagined. As I wanted him to.
“Let me know if this is something you can do, Ruby.”
“Drew would never want to work with me.” I scoffed, my lips puckered.
“And why’s that?” Gavin turned back at Drew, curiosity on his sensuous lips.
“Yeah, why’s that Ruby?” Drew feigned ignorance, the smirk in his face warned me not to thread the rough edge. “Or how about I clear the air on why…”
“What wouldn’t be necessary.” I spewed, interrupting him, fear of having Gavin know I broke the vow I made to him built up

inside of me. “We’ll make a very competent team” I gave a toothy grin and slipped towards the car.

It was obvious now Drew didn’t inform Gavin about what happened a few days ago. Even though Drew was mad, he had my best interest at heart. Or so I thought.
Drew read some information from the dossiers before him to Gavin, but his red eyes rested out of the window, his mind perceptibly off.
What did Drew mean the other day a lot was happening lately with our King. Why did he appear so frustrated?
I’m going to help you, your Majesty,” I whispered just above my breath, “I want to help you. I want you to be happy
If he heard me, nothing in his features suggested he was moved by my desire to help.
Well, it didn’t matter. I wanted to reward him for saving my pathetic life. That became the only mission worth pursuing.
