RUBY DOUGLAS
“Don’t breathe a word.”
Drew whispered, knowing I witnessed what just happened.
Gavin stood by the table with his haunted gaze on me. Without a word, he turned away from the table towards the small crowd on the dance floor, straight to the exit, and disappeared from my sight with Denise sprinting towards him.
I fluttered my gaze to the table now void of Gavin. Norman and Kirk broke off to a triumphant laugh, chatting boisterously above the music.
“It’s nothing serious.” Drew poured me another glass of tequila, “There are a few crooked ways to make things straight when it comes to our king.”
“Tell me.” I took a sip of my drink, beginning to loosen up, loving the feel of the music through my bones.
“Only you can’t tell him, you’re a part of our team. Us against our fat attitude king.”
I nodded. Either Drew was drunk or he felt the need to spill his guts.
“What you just witnessed is what we all needed to do to keep every one of us alive.” He took a sip of his drink, waved back at someone, and continued, “There’s a medieval ring Kirk thought he’d lost, long story short, returned a fake to the king, and when we found the original we thought of ways to sneak it back to him without our necks getting on the line.”
It didn’t make any sense to me. Nothing about everything made sense. Was Gavin this much of a terror even to his friends?
“Want to dance?” Norman returned, interrupting our conversation.
I shook my head, and he gave a throaty snort, took my hands, and gently guided me to my feet right away to the dance floor. Nathan’s piercing gaze shot at me. And everyone else who was about to watch me embarrass myself. I couldn’t dance. Never danced.
The alcohol in my system made everything swirl, it welcomed thoughts that left me emotional. Gavin and Denise were out there, together. Did he take her back to the main building of the mansion? Were they going to have sex? I’d seen them all night acting like two wolves in heat.
Were they together? Denise possessed strength and beauty, the qualities any man would want, any ruler would want. Trying to compete for Gavin’s attention with a girl as sophisticated, cultured, and sexy as Denise would be exactly like an ugly duckling pit against a swan.
“Is everything alright?” Norman asked just as he was about to begin dancing.
With the alcohol taking hold of my judgment, heightening my hearing ability it was hard to tune off the cacophony of slurping, giggles, and erotic thoughts above the music in the hall and what was worse, the one sound that instantly made my knees buckle.
The wet, sloppy sound of hungry lips fiercely taking each other, the rhythmic heartbeats I knew so well.
“Ruby?”
I didn’t realize I was closing my eyes until they popped open when Norman softly shook me. Norman’s forehead creased, entreaty eyes fixed on me.
Hearing Gavin kiss someone else, Denise to be precise, with such raw intensity, a kiss with a contradictory symphony of tender and fierce made my entire world collapse.

I sniffled not knowing where to go, returning to his section of the boilding wasn’t such a post idea but I needed to go away from everyone back in there,
This stupid obsession with the virile king built up quicker then I could quell it took Cool appearing like a knight in shining armor to save me from my distress for my heart and wolf to automatically desire him and it took him locking lips with me, giving me my first kiss for my wolf to lay claims on him. For a fiery fame of desire to be ignited inside me.
I sniffled again. My wolf purred,
Why did I feel so betrayed?

I reprimanded my wolf. Myself.
I reached the threshold of the wing I stayed in, dried my eyes, and tried to breathe calmly. Nobody wanted a lowly Omega with a history of petty thefts. But why did it hurt this much?
The heavy footsteps approaching caught my attention, before I could let myself inside Gavin walked up the threshold to me causing my heart to flutter. I instinctively looked beyond him to confirm if his girlfriend was on his heels. Well, he was all alone.
“Ruby…”
“What?!” I snapped, my tone surprised us both, “How can I be of service to you, your Majesty?”
“Have you been crying?” His tone became super soft, eyes drowned in an eerie emotion.
Yeah, so?
Instead of a reply, I pushed the door until it yielded, letting myself inside. Slamming it straight in his face.
He swung the door open and stepped in, his strides betrayed his deceptive mild exterior. He caught hold of my hand and swiveled me so I could face him.
“What!” I yelled until my lungs threatened to burst. “Leave me alone!”
“What the fuck is your problem, runt?”
Runt? Oh wow!
Tears pooled again in my eyes. Not now. Please. Please. Please.
“I have none, sir. And I sincerely apologize if I disrupted your pleasant midnight memories, Your Majesty, sir.”
1 scurried to the stairs, partly because my tears dropped and I didn’t want him to see me cry. Why in the hell was I acting this way?
I got into my room and slammed the door. But ouch! His fingers intercepted the door and its frame.
