Chapter 13
RUBY DOUGLAS
Gavin broke his ensnaring gaze only because two men stepped out of the bush flanking the highway.

I caught a breath and studied the company we had with frantic heartbeats. One of the men had on a black sleeveless shirt and a pair of faded jeans. A scorpion tattoo on his left arm and a smirk etched on his face while the other man looked fiercer with a rifle held above his head.
“Stay in the car,” Gavin mumbled the instruction, released my hand, and stepped out of the car.
My heart leaped to my mouth. Bad things could spring up any second but this situation was nothing Gavin couldn’t handle. They were just two men. Yet, flash images of Gavin getting hurt seemed to stir up in my mind at every step he took toward the two fellows.
Just then, a Cadillac pulled up before us in opposite direction, the guy with the scorpion tattoo marched to the car, reached into it, and took out a shiny attaché case handing it over to Gavin.
I listened intently to their minds but heard nothing.
Gavin returned to the car, tossed the case in the backseat, and started the ignition. The men nodded in acknowledgment as the car reversed, and zoomed down the highway.
Lots of questions raced through my mind, my eyes shifting to the case in the backseat now and then trying so hard to not probe him over it.
He didn’t say a word to me the rest of the ride until he parked outside the mansion, took out the attaché case, and met my gaze on the threshold.
“What?”
“What’s in the case?” I couldn’t contend with the curiosity any further.
“Come with me then you’ll find out what.”
Ouch! His tone, demeanor, and heated glares suggested his sarcastic snigger was more of a threat. He hurriedly moved past me on the threshold and disappeared inside, no doubt headed for the office, he spent most of his life there. Working.
I met Drew in the living area and didn’t expect him to hand me a little plastic bag. A gift?
My beaming smile must’ve been contagious because he got infected. “Boss wants you to have this for easy communication. You’re coming tonight right?”
“I’d love to but I don’t want to offend Gavin. Oh, I mean, King… your boss…” I spluttered.
“He doesn’t give a hoot about such things. It’s within the mansion you can always leave if you feel the need to, any time.”
I collapsed on my bed when I reached the room, blew out my cheeks, and just watched the ceiling.
Now this party spiked my interest. I wanted to go. I wanted to drink and get drunk for the first time in my life.
Would it be so much to go for if I invited Evelyn?
Evelyn.
I sprang to my feet. I had somewhere I needed to go. With no money on me, it would take me about two hours on foot to get to Evelyn. I needed the distraction. I’d rather walk a million miles than stay trapped in this vast room with thoughts of

Gavin pushing into my sexual boundaries.
He smelt my arousal earlier. How embarrassing. Grossly embarrassing!
I washed up in the bathroom, changed into a more comfortable dress, and headed towards the front door with Drew’s voice from Gavin’s home office in the air. I met Hannah and no surprise, insisted on confirming if I took anything,
“You’re lucky, little thief!” She scorned.
“Call me a thief one more time and I won’t hesitate to tell the king I don’t feel comfortable around you?
That was all it took to shut Hannah up and to gain my freedom. I hid the pleasant smile on my face. How pleasant to have such leverage over these people. I wished I had done the same with Nathan.
Nathan. No, the subject to not dwell on.
Evelyn looked away from the bird she was plucking in the kitchen, her eyes widened and her joy drowned the hateful gazes of the other girls.
“Ruby!”
She squealed when I pulled her into a bone–crushing hug.
“I’ve missed you!” I cried.
“You smell so good. You look beautiful. Very beautiful.”
I quickly washed my hands and helped her pluck the birds so she could finish sooner enough for a more private chat
“Why do I have a feeling there’s more to your duties with our high king?” She whispered with a cocked brow
“Don’t, okay?”
She caught my smile, “Are you still a virgin?”
What?
I hurled the feathers in my hand at her apron and she burst forth in laughter.
“There’s nothing like that going on over there okay?”
“You’ve no idea how lucky you…” She trailed off at the sight of the raven–haired girl who just walked in with her two minions clinging to her sides.
Louisa. My cousin. The Pack beauty queen my mate Nathan rejected me for.
Her beady eyes scanned the cooking area to where I stood. I made no mistakes of the smirks on her face.
“Ruby the runt, long time no see.”
“Hi, cousin.” I forced a smile.
We used to be friends until she took more interest in winning the Alpha, shedding off an Omega like me.
Her eyes scanned my dress, though simple, it shocked me she could recognize the brand.
“A runt will always be a runt even in a Zara dress!”
Giggles filled the air. Hateful comments dropped here and there.

“I give you two weeks tops before King Gavin knows the stuff you’re made of.”
“Kleptomaniac!” Stassie, her bitchy best friend chimed.

“You’re lucky that I’ve gotten my claws polished for this all–exclusive party tonight and I wouldn’t want to ruin it by carving into your skin.” She narrowed her gaze and barked, “Thank me this second!”
“Thank you, Luna,” I murmured.
The smugness on his high cheekbones bruised me. But I chose to bite my tongue.
Giggling, she turned out of the kitchen with her two gossipy best friends following.
“I’m so sorry about that.” Evelyn tried to cheer me up.
When we reached the small room we shared in the omegas quarter, I finally had the chance to invite her to this party.
“There’s a party at the mansion. I don’t want to attend alone.” I pushed away what just happened from my mind, the excitement of getting to attend a party sparked up some more.
“What? No? I’m not worthy to be at such parties. I’m not even invited.”
“Well, I’m inviting you.”
“That’s so much flattery but I know my boundaries. It’ll cost my head for such boldness. Partying with the high king of the kingdom.” She chuckled incredulously.
“Gavin’s not going to be there.”
“You call him by name?”
“He doesn’t mind.”
“Are you sleeping with him?”
I swatted her arm and groaned, “Why does everyone think that? Our king is very nice, okay? You don’t imagine he’d want a pathetic Omega in his bed?”
Would he?
