Chapter 12
RUBY DOUGLAS
No response came to Gavin’s question and my heart swelled with gratitude when he didn’t prod.
Either he chose to respect my silence or he just didn’t care.
The latter seemed to be the case because he took his gaze off me and they never wandered my way until the chauffeur parked outside the mansion. I scurried out of the car through the front double doors and towards the room I was offered to stay in and collapsed on the bed, sobbing.
Midnight tears were healing.
Nathan made this grow into a nightmare for me. Trying to sneak information from a team as structured, vigilant, and sensitive as Gavin’s team was as impossible as trying to open a clam with my fingers. I’d only get hurt. Exactly what Nathan wanted.
Drew drove to a fancy restaurant the next day at noon for lunch, the curly–haired assistant was a lot easier to talk to and connect with, when he offered to take me to eat somewhere nice I didn’t hesitate to jump on it.
Well, it wasn’t until I reached the reservation did I realize this wasn’t about just the two of us. Gavin’s redhead was the first thing I spotted at the table then Norman’s broad smiles.
“You look more beautiful by the day,” Norman offered, “Come sit next to me, I appreciate beautiful creatures.”
My heart soared. I felt beautiful. The urge to smile back at Norman became great not until I met Gavin’s soured mood. He looked like he was grinding rocks with his teeth.
I settled beside Norman and offered Kirk a smile instead which instantly faded as I snagged Denise’s scorching glares.
“Are we sharing meals now with an Omega?” Denise huffed.
“Knock it the fuck off, Denny,” Norman hissed. “Ruby is a part of us.”
Denise’s words didn’t matter to me, not as what Gavin’s snubs did to me. Kirk and Norman chattered softly as they ate. The salmon before me made it hard to want to do anything else but eat. Greedily or not, I just wanted to have it all, it was by far the best thing I’d ever eaten. Hauled and lost in the great taste, I momentarily forgot where I was.
“I have more important things to take care of.” The annoyance clipping Gavin’s tone pulled me out of my reverie.
“It’s never a party with you Gavin, please!” Denise pouted in a way I thought was cute. She was a beautiful woman. Her drawls seemed to fuel Gavin’s fury. She shrugged, with her hands flailing in the air, “I give up, Mr. Workaholic.”
I chuckled. This caught Norman’s attention.
“You’re coming to this party tonight, right?” Norman’s tone was quiet, as though pleading.
To set the record straight, Norman had a warrior wolf. He was in charge of training the warriors and defenders of the territory. Having him speak this softly to me seemed to awaken the girl power side of me I didn’t know I had.
“I’ve never been to a party.”
Nothing about that was funny but why then did Denise simper?
“Don’t worry darling, I’ll make your first time worthwhile,” Norman placed soft fingers on my shoulder.
“Get them the fuck off her this instant!” Gavin muttered, mouth tight and grim.

Chapter 12
Norman’s fingers dropped from my shoulder, “Tonight should be fun.” His dark gaze regarded Gavin, then a smirk… Gavin glanced at this wristwatch, got to his feet, and regarded me critically.
I got the memo. Reached for the glass of water, gulped down, and sprang to my feet. Following the red–haired king out the door.
He didn’t stop until he reached the car in the smiting sunlight, held the car door open for me.
With his proximity, my shoulder lightly brushed against his broad chest, shocking me with a tingle of heat that lasted long after the brief contact.
“Can I go tonight?” I asked, seeking distractions as he slipped behind the wheel of the car, his fingers working on the ignition.
He roared the engine and sent the car purring down the street leaving my question to hang. His features clenching dangerously, reminding me of who he was.
“I’m not going, okay? I don’t like parties. I shrugged for peace to reign.
“You’ve never been to one.” He speared my gaze, surprisingly sounding more human than a wounded lion.
“It doesn’t matter.” Who needed to go to a party anyway?
He smoothed his hand from the steering wheel to my side, caught hold of mine and my breath grew ragged. This unexpected move rendered me transfixed in my seat. He laced our fingers, his thumb gently stroking the back of my palm. A rush of heat coursed through my veins.
Colors flooded my cheeks as he tightened his hold when I tried to pull free. The feel of his palm against mine sent electric signals through my body, lighting up every bit of me. A soft gasp nearly left my parted lips as my body fought to subdue the ache in between my thighs.
The smirks quirked on his lips made it clear Gavin was vastly aware of exactly what our laced fingers did to me. I swallowed hard, aimlessly filled with anticipation.
He turned off the main busy road onto the highway, no, we were not headed home. But where?
My mind was too hazy, too occupied by the blissful sensations surging through me to want to think of where he was taking
- me.
“Ruby, are you this innocent?” His soft and husky tone didn’t match the unhealthy speed he drove on the highway.
If he was talking about virginity then he just tilted to the wrong topic. One I’d never talk about.
“Tell me about your mate. Boyfriend. Bestie. Anything you call him.” He prodded.
I mentally scanned for what to say. Nathan rejected me. I didn’t have any mates, never dated. And kind–hearted Evelyn, the only friend I had.
Those words would only make me sound so pathetic. The one thing I loathed to be, not before the king which strength was of utmost importance to.
Gavin’s eyes briefly locked on mine, “Don’t lie to me, little wolf,” he muttered, his voice filled and clipped with seduction, “I can smell it on you, on your arousal, the scent of innocence, of untouched passion.”
And with that, Gavin laid on the brakes, the car screeched to a halt in the middle of nowhere on the deserted highway.
The sudden silence became painfully deafening, my ragged breathing filled the car to think his predatory eyes were solely on me, searching, waiting for a response.

I felt trapped, caught in the noose of Gavin’s desire. And I wasn’t sure if I truly wanted to escape.
