Chapter 11
RUBY DOUGLAS
Alpha Nathan appeared a little uneasy about having me in the meeting. His gaze swept my way for most of the meeting, his mind void of any thoughts.
He consciously willed every thought out of his mind, afraid I would invade them. But his firm and soft gazes laced with lust and amazement suggested he found me attractive in the black dress, and awed to have me attend a meeting as important as
this one.
Gavin wanted me to document every thought in the room, exactly what I was doing even though the words were horrendously scribbled and the spellings weren’t right, I simply obeyed his instructions going beyond myself to please him.
Three more hours and the meeting came to an end with handshakes and satisfied chuckles from the grim–faced elders.
I handed the notepad over to Drew and waited outside by Gavin’s waiting car, admiring the starlights above.
My head snapped to the left exit in time to see Nathan zoom towards me.
“Let’s talk!”
An order. His alpha tone and steely gaze suggested he wouldn’t appreciate if I refuted. He started towards the far end of the parking space which was a bit darker than the rest of the space outside.
Nathan was still Alpha of the pack, the high king of the kingdom in his pack or not. In a few more months the barbaric troops of the Outlanders would be defeated and Gavin and his all–mighty troops would leave the kingdom leaving me back again at Nathan’s mercy.
The only way to survive here in Syzygy after Gavin left the Pack was to respect those in authority, especially the alpha. Nathan.
“What do you want to talk about?” I asked when I met him in the dark corner, a little shaky from how overwhelming his Alpha aura grew.
Nathan could hurt me without anyone taking notice, we were out of the sights of the pack elders heading towards their cars. And Gavin, only the goddess knew what stalled him inside.
“Did you fuck him?”
No. But the question sounded as straight as an accusation.
“Who…”
My words were muffled by his palm on my chin, his fingers stabbing into my jaws, squeezing hard.
“How could I not have seen how much of a whore, a desperate whore that are!”

I tried to ease the pressure on my jaws with my hands, afraid he’d knock out a tooth or two. The more I tried, the harder he squeezed my jawbones, the pain grew unbearable, so I gave up the struggle, tears streaming down my face from how helpless I was.
“I’ve watched you all night, you want to fuck him right?”
Gavin was a fine piece of a man, could he blame me?
“You’re my mate! Got that? You bitch about with King Gavin and I fucking swear to make you pay.”

His snarls, raspy breaths, and the bulge in his pants pressing hard against me terrified me. Amid my fears, I sought ways to shield myself from his fury.
“Why the hell did he make you attend the meeting? You’re as dumb as shit!”
When no reply came he released my jaws so I could speak.
Instead of a response, I spat out the blood in my mouth. My gaze darted back to search for Gavin but he was nowhere in sight.
“King Gavin needed me to write down the thoughts of everyone in the room,” I spoke, tears pooling from my eyes.
Whatever involvements with Gavin were supposed to be confidential. I hoped he wouldn’t mind that I shared this with Nathan.
Nathan’s gaze squinted, his mind processing what I just told him. He sucked in an audible breath and grabbed my chin again. Harder than the last time.
“You’re fuckin‘ going to do as I say, or you’re dead!”
I nodded, helplessly.
“From now on, whatever plans, meetings, tasks, whatever information amongst the king’s troop,” he paused only to cuss, “Ruby you’re going to bare them out before me. Got it?”
I didn’t nod. How could I?
He smashed my head against the brick wall, and the pain seizing my entire frame forced me to nod.
“You breathe a word about this to anyone then I…”
“I won’t say anything about this. I promise.” My fingers were trembling, teeth chattering from fear.
Everyone in Syzygy knew the stuff Nathan was made of. Any Pack member would rather jump off the cliff than cross this brute Alpha.
Just then, Gavin walked out of the right exit door, flanked by two elders in a light conversation, Kirk walking behind them with his attention on his phone then Drew came out last.
“Fix your ugly face this second!” Nathan pulled from me. Waited until I let loose my hair from the bun to drop down my chin to my shoulders cascading down my arms and back. “Gavin raises any question about your chin then you’re dead!”

He cleared his throat, regarded me with a smirk curled on his face, and walked out of the darkness into the light and towards his car.
I fought the need to drop to my knees to sob. With wobbly feet, I started towards the car with my head hung. Praying Gavin wouldn’t notice anything amiss with my mood.
“Are you alright?” Drew asked, first to notice.
I nodded and managed a smile, not daring to look up at Gavin whose attention was on what the elders were saying
to him, but his gaze remained fixed on me by the car.
“Can I wait in the car?” I asked Drew with a small smile.
He nodded and held the Bentley open so I could get into the backseat, disappearing from Gavin’s scrutiny.
Gavin settled beside me in the backseat of his car, the furrow between his bushy brows brought a wave of panic inside me. Nathan’s threats`rang loudly in my ears.

I leaned back in my seat, praying for a distraction, anything to get the hardened pair of red eyes burning with intensity from
- me.
“Ruby,” he called out, his voice above a whisper, “I can smell the fear on you. Who’s hurting you?”
