RUBY DOUGLAS
The day went by swiftly with Gavin gone from the mansion and nothing to do, I gave myself a tour of the opulent mansion overwhelmed by the stretched–out blue pool before my eyes. The need to dive right in shriveled when Hannah chided me from the pool area.
I belonged here now, quite unlikely but true. A part of the most powerful troop in all the Lycan territories. Hannah served me lunch with an attitude as big as this mansion, and then the rest of the day was filled with finding the perfect outfit to wear for my first task with Gavin tonight.
Drew dropped in about a few minutes to three p.m. with some branded shopping bags in both hands and handed them to
- me.
“You were late once, you can’t afford to be late twice in a row,” his phone beeped, he glanced at it, lingered on the screen a little longer before he regarded me again, “Boss will pick you up at seven p.m. sharp. Look your absolute best.”
He turned towards Gavin’s home office, unlocked it with a gold card, and disappeared into the office returning after a while with two dossiers and nodded my way exiting the living area.
Later that evening, I strengthened my pecan hair, securing it into a neat bun just as Evelyn taught me, and changed out of the white bathrobe into a breathtaking Chanel dress and a lovely pair of mules. A lip balm on and I was ready.
Gavin walked in through the doors exactly as Drew forecasted, seven p.m., his face knotted in either stress or rage which seemed to have dissolve when he found me in the living room.
His firm red eyes perceptibly wandered my body taking in every inch of my bare neck down to my legs before he audibly cleared his guts, the softness rimming his eyes hardened and without a word, he gathered himself up the stairs.
Thirty more minutes he descended the stairs in a different tailored suit, phone against his ear. His face white from the shower and coral red hair brushed to perfection.
King Gavin Ackerman certainly was the kind of man girls like me should avoid at all costs. Or was he the kind every girl needed to experience at least once in her life?
I eyed him carefully, my wolf reacting as though she knew exactly what we both wanted. My hormones seemed to kick up a notch at the mere thoughts of Gavin taking gallant steps my way. Sexual curiosity appeared to be on the rampage. What would it be like to touch him again, to kiss him all over again, losing ourselves in the passion that smoldered in his eyes?
Exciting, how I found myself practically gawking his way as though he might explain this eerie attraction crackling between us like the natural pull of the mate’s bond.
He chose not to say a word to me. I had nothing to say to him neither, so we wallowed in the most painful and awkward silence as we approached his parked car in the evening air.
“What I need you to do tonight is pretty simple,” he broke the silence only when the chauffeur had turned into the main busy streets, “Every thought in the room tonight, I want you to write them down, describe them to the best of your ability.”
He handed a notepad and a ball pen to me. I gazed blankly at the notepad in my hands. Nervous and unsure of how to tell him this was a task I couldn’t carry out.
“Tonight’s meeting is an important one, try not to disappoint me, Ruby.”
“I can tell you what everyone’s thoughts are after the meeting. I don’t need to write them down.” I chuckled nervously, handing back the notepad and pen to him, trying to ignore how sweaty my palms grew.
His jaws tensed visibly, just then, the chauffeur turned into the enormous pack business complex building with a sign that read ‘Pack Council Headquarters‘ I almost convulsed.

Tm dyslexic.” I muttered, tone faltering. Bile rose from the pit of my stomach threatening to spill from how unsettling I’d felt in the last forty minutes.
To think I already failed him. All I wanted was to please Gavin, to give him reasons to want to look in my direction, and to forget I possessed the most feeble wolf in the pack. My extraordinary hearing ability was my pride and joy before this appealing ruler but now, it appeared useless. I appeared useless before him.
His gaze locked on my uneasy ones, his expression unreadable, but orbs plainly gave away his scorns. A useless runt.
Just as Gavin’s narrowed gaze darkened at how infuriated he grew at my sudden revelation, the chauffeur tilted his head to the back of the car where we sat, where the tension between us hung heavy, and announced our arrival.
“We have arrived, Your Majesty.” The middle–aged man’s voice cut through the tension.
Gavin’s glacial gaze swept from my blanched face to the chauffeur, the corners of his mouth twisted slyly as though he was about to mutter something, but the car door swung open.
The crisp evening air swept into the car but did nothing to ease the knots in the pit of my stomach.
My gaze drifted to the window to see Nathan with a few pack elders waiting at the entrance of the council building.
“I don’t want to disappoint you.” I caught hold of Gavin’s toned arm restraining him from stepping out of the car.
Instantly regretted touching him because the temptation to not let go was too great to overcome. I didn’t bother to try.
My heart shattered to a thousand pieces when Gavin tugged off his arm and without a glance my way, stepped out of the car and started towards the main entrance.
The best option for me was to run away without looking back. I tried twice in a row and it didn’t work. I couldn’t risk the third time. Instead, I sucked in a breath, grabbed the writing pads, and stepped out of the car.
Just keep breathing. Breathe, Ruby. Breathe.
