Chapter 7
Morning in the city–the first street sweeper truck rumbled past the apartment building, playing Chesca’s favorite song, Someone Like You by Adele.
A sliver of dawn light spilled into the bedroom as the curtains swayed gently.
Fabian was no longer beside her.
Last night, he hadn’t forced fucking on her, but he’d awakened many times, kissing her repeatedly…
He seemed like he’d been holding back for a long time. His lips trailing down her throat, murmuring against her skin, “Chesca… let’s start over.”
Start over…
Two simple words from Fabian held such immense temptation for Chesca, but past sufferings had made her wary.
That night at Celestial Club, when Fabian looked ready to explode with anger, had frightened her. She feared it would all end up being just another dream.
Afterward, Fabian came for three or four consecutive nights.
Nothing extraordinary happened–he would arrive late at night, eat a plate of noodles, hold her while she slept without making love, then leave before she awoke. Like they were young lovers again.
Then, Fabian stopped coming.
He didn’t call Chesca, nor did she reach out. She was busy with plans for her studio, wanting to start with a small gallery before eventually expanding into art auctions.
She stayed in touch with Mrs. Richmond, who praised her plans. “Mrs. Elkedonia, you’re
great!”

Chapter 7
She never discussed her personal life. Until the divorce was finalized, there was no point in
airing out unfinished business.
And just like that, time passed.
Autumn arrived. The leaves turned gold and crisp, whispering against the
pavement.
Then came the call.
Her grandmother’s caretaker Amy’s voice was urgent over the line. “Madam fell down. She’s at Riverside Medical. Please come quickly, Miss Lavirins.”
Chesca dropped everything and rushed to the hospital.
Nothing was more important to Chesca than her grandmother.
-That winter years ago.
78
Five–year–old Chesca had been starving on the street, skin and bones, shivering with cold. It’s her grandmother who found her and took her home, tucking her into a warm bed and nursing her back to health for a month until she gained some weight.
She and her grandmother had relied on each other, with Grandmother enduring many hardships to raise Chesca.
After her marriage, once Chesca had the means, she bought her grandmother a large house
and hired two caretakers to look after her.
Half an hour later, Chesca arrived at the hospital. Fortunately, it was only a sprain.
A rush of relief washed over her as she knelt beside the bed, brushing her grandmother’s silver hair gently. “I’ll go complete the admission paperwork.”
Nearby, the caretaker Amy praised Chesca to her grandmother. “Miss Lavirins is incredible! The moment the director saw her, he immediately arranged this room–the best VIP suite in the hospital.”

Grandmother’s eyes crinkled with a smile. “That’s my girl.”
Chesca smiled, smoothing her grandmother’s hair once more before stepping out.
The hospital’s VIP wing was a set of historic townhouses, surrounded by beautifully
maintained gardens. The deep reds of the maple leaves burned against the cool morning
sky.
Chesca couldn’t help but admire the view.
The next second, her gaze froze.
At the far end of the corridor, Fabian was carrying Veronica in his arms, with Draxion
Arnault and his wife following behind.
Veronica rested her head on Fabian’s shoulder, looking fragile, while her husband Fabian
wore an expression of tender concern.
Chesca watched almost numbly as the man who had held her at night, who had spoken of starting over, now publicly carried another woman without any regard for appearances or
gossip.
She couldn’t help thinking: How deeply must he love her, to disregard all rumors?
Chesca didn’t want to waste another second on this mess and turned to leave, but
Veronica’s sweet voice called out from behind. “Mrs. Elkedonia.”
Chesca turned around to face the illicit couple.
Veronica clung tightly to Fabian’s neck, calling out again in her sugary voice. “Mrs. Elkedonia, there’s nothing between Fabian and me! I’m just feeling unwell, that’s why he’s
carrying me.”
Before Chesca could respond, Mrs. Arnault spoke with polite detachment. “You must be Fabian’s wife. Veronica and Fabian grew up together. He’s just taking extra care of her–but I’m sure you wouldn’t mind, would you?“-
Chesca looked at Fabian.

He hadn’t let go of Veronica, merely frowning slightly.
Chesca had no interest in jealous confrontations. She was simply disgusted by the Arnault mother and daughter, so she laughed coldly.
“Mrs. Arnault, your daughter and Fabian should keep their affair behind closed doors. No need to parade it around making everyone sick. Whether I care isn’t the point–I’m just wondering if your precious daughter minds getting my sloppy seconds.”
Mrs. Arnault was furious, blurting out. “An orphans has absolutely no class.”
“Mrs. Arnault!”
Fabian reprimanded her in a low voice. Though young but sharp enough to halt whatever venom Mrs. Arnault was about to spew.
Fabian set Veronica down and approached to grab Chesca’s wrist. “I’ll explain later.”
But Chesca gently pulled away.
She looked at Fabian, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “No need to explain. Fabian Elkedonia, let’s not embarrass ourselves any further! Let’s not waste, each other’s time.”
Draxion tried to mediate. “It’s all just a misunderstanding.”
“Is it?”
Chesca turned to him. “Oh? Then how about this–can you promise me, right now, that your daughter will never go near Fabian again?”
For a moment, Draxion hesitated.
Mrs. Arnault cut in with a venomous tone. “Miss Lavirins, the unloved one is the real
mistress!”
Draxion shot his wife a warning–look and scolded his wife.
Chesca didn’t want to engage with these terrible people any longer. She only said to Fabian.

“Think it over. Sign the papers soon–you can give your sweetheart official status then.”
And with that, she walked away without a backward glance.
Life was fleeting, too fragile to be squandered on hesitation and regret.
Behind her, Fabian stood amid the red maple leaves, silently watching her retreating figure with his expression inscrutable.
Evening, on the hospital rooftop.
The sunset spread across the sky, crimson clouds drifting with the wind in spectacular
splendor.
Chesca leaned against the railing, gazing at the cityscape and contemplating her next steps. As she was lost in thought, steady footsteps approached from behind.
Chesca turned to find Zeno standing there.
He came up beside her, resting his arms against the railing.
“Because of Fabian?”
Chesca didn’t answer.
Zeno wasn’t the type to need one. He turned to look at the sunset, his voice deep and measured. “Back then, it made sense. Falling for him. Out of all of us, Fabian was always the most…. ambitious. He always knew what he wanted. I thought I was ruthless enough, but Fabian proved to be even more so.”
“He’s not only ruthless to others, but to himself as well.”
…
After speaking, Zeno turned to gaze silently at Chesca.

The sunset was dazzling and the tip of her straight nose was slightly reddened, as if she’d been crying.
Zeno swallowed, the lump in his throat tightening.
