Chapter 9
I had to be honest.
Before coming to Irisco, I thought that getting a divorce was a huge deal.
I thought that leaving Henry would break my heart and leave me in agony.
However, I suddenly realized something after arriving here.
It turned out that not waiting for a man to come home was so freeing and relaxing.
I no longer had to wake up early to make breakfast for Henry or endure his cold words.
I did not have to smell the lingering scent of perfume on his clothes, getting angry while throwing them into the washing machine with a cold expression.
I realized that divorce was actually quite exhilarating.
Even my son, who always wanted to get closer to Henry, could not help but exclaim when he saw the steaming food on the table,
“Mommy, I wish we had left Uncle Parker earlier!”
I could not help but laugh when I heard that, but my heart felt bitter.
Henry was a jerk and a real piece of trash.
He never took any responsibility as a father, yet he always used his fatherly title to boss me and our son around.
For instance, no junk food was allowed, no talking while eating, no knocking over dishes with cutleries…
More and more rules.
If our son did not follow his rules, he would say, “Serena, I really don’t know how you’re a mother. Can’t you teach your kid basic
manners?”
I used to be so worn down by him that I would weakly apologize every time.
Now that I did not love him anymore, all I wanted to say to him was, ‘Shut up!‘
I kissed my son’s little face at the thought of this. My smile was brimming with hope.
“Lyle, we’re going to be just fine from now on.”
My son nodded and flashed a bright smile, revealing the gap where a tiny tooth had once been.
“I believe in you, Mommy.”
Just then, the doorbell rang.

Henry’s hoarse voice came from outside.
“Serena, open the door.”

In an instant, my son and I instinctively wiped the smile from our faces.
I was not surprised that he found us so quickly.
After all, we had not officially divorced yet, and many of our assets were still tied together.
My son looked at me nervously and quietly asked, “Mommy, what should we do about Uncle Parker?”
I gently patted his head and told him, “I need to have a good talk with Uncle Parker. Can you go upstairs and play for a while?”
He hesitated for a moment but then nodded.
After he went upstairs, I opened the door.
Henry looked a little pale. It looked like he had not slept, and rough stubble was growing on his chin.
His appearance was completely different from his usual polished, financial elite image.
When he saw me, Henry immediately put on an angry face.
“Serena, you’ve got some guts! How dare you not answer my calls!
“Do
you
“I do.”
believe I…”
I cut him off and replied directly.
Henry’s words caught in his throat. His gaze was burning as he stared at me. It was like he was searching for the old weakness he
used to see in me.
However, he was destined to be disappointed.
I was weak back then because I loved him. Now that I did not, I had grown strong in resolve.
I put on a smile, stepped aside, and let him in.
After all, this was the place my son and I were planning to settle down in, and I did not want anyone to know my ex–husband was
a crazy person.
Sitting on the sofa, Henry glanced around, then sneered, “Is this what you’re left with after leaving me?”
I smiled.
“I love it. I no longer have to bend over backward, watching you play #1 Dad with your ex’s kid. It makes living here a whole lot

easier.”
My words were sharp, but Henry let out a chuckle.
He looked at me with a glint of determination in his eyes.
