As a reward.
A reward for the latest lesson my son and I had learned.
However, my son and I had left now.
Without warning.
Without looking back.
Henry covered his face and collapsed onto the ground, feeling utterly out of control.
The phone rang again.
Henry sat up suddenly and grabbed his phone.
“Serena, you…”
“Henry?”
Evelyn’s voice came through the phone.
Henry’s face darkened. There was no warmth left in his voice.
“Yes?”
Evelyn paused for a moment, sounding surprised, but continued, “Henry, the pipes in our house are broken. Ethan and I don’t know what to do. Can you help us?”
“How can I help?”
Evelyn hesitated for a moment, then awkwardly answered, “I was wondering… Could we… stay at your place for a while?”
“Hah.
“You really think it’s that easy?
Henry let out a laugh. His voice was as cold as ice.
Now that I was gone, Evelyn had lost any value to him.
He could not be bothered to pretend anymore.
“Evelyn, I thought you were a smart person.”
There was a pause at the other end of the line and then a stunned question.
“Henry, what… what did you say?”

Henry looked up, staring at the drawing his son had left on the wall. His voice was low and steady.
“Evelyn, why would I want a woman who has betrayed me?
“Especially a second–hand one.”

Things fell to the floor, showing the other person’s unease.
“Henry, I…”
Henry did not bother listening anymore and hung up the phone.
He lay on the floor, staring at the ceiling all night until dawn came.
When he finally fell asleep, the company’s call woke him up.
“Mr. Parker, we’ve got a problem. The client just pulled a last–minute 180 on the deal Miss Clarke was handling. Now, the whole
project’s stuck.
“You need to come in.”
Henry frowned, instinctively replying, “Call Miss Clarke and have her deal with it.”
The manager hesitated momentarily and carefully replied, “Mr. Parker, Miss Clarke has resigned.
“We can’t get in touch with her.”
Henry opened his eyes in shock.
“Resigned?
“Who approved her resignation?!
“Why wasn’t I informed?”
The string of questions left the manager confused.
“Miss Clarke said her husband is working in Irisco. She’s taking her child there so they can be together as a family.
“She submitted her resignation letter, and it was all approved according to the procedure. Didn’t you know, Mr. Parker?”
Henry froze for a moment.
He had indeed seen the resignation letter on his computer earlier.
However, Evelyn had been pestering him with her problems, so he had not paid any attention and had approved it without even looking at it.
He clenched his fists, filled with regret at the thought of it.

The next second, he quickly grasped the key point in the manager’s words.
“They went to Irisco?”
The manager nodded.
“Yes, Miss Clarke said she wanted to further her studies while she was there.”
Henry hung up the phone and immediately booked a flight to Irisco.
‘Serena, there’s no way you can get rid of me in this lifetime.‘
On the other hand, in Irisco.
We were on the small amount of remaining conscience Henry had left.
