Chapter 5
I forced my eyes open, trying to see him clearly, but it was as if a black veil covered my vision. I couldn’t make out a thing.
I let out a mocking laugh. “What could a blind woman possibly do to you?”
Alaric suddenly coughed up another mouthful of blood. His face was deathly pale.
“This wasn’t how it happened in the previous life. You must have done something to me, you wretched woman.”
“Tell me what did you do to me? If you don’t speak, I’ll kill you.”
With a sharp swish, a blade was pressed against my neck.
I felt no fear. “I haven’t even seen you these past few days. How could I possibly have harmed you?”
Alaric wasn’t one to be fooled so easily. His eyes narrowed.
“Then what did you mean by that? When you said I would regret it–what exactly were you trying to say?”
I curled my lips coldly. “You should ask your lovely wife. Ask her what she’s done to you.”
“Your Highness, don’t listen to her nonsense!” Lyanna suddenly rushed in, tears brimming in her eyes. “Elira is just trying to drive a wedge between us and destroy our marriage so she can take advantage of the chaos.”
The blade crept closer to my throat, and Alaric’s icy voice whispered near my ear.
“Elira, do you really think that if you turn Lyanna and me against each other, I’ll marry you? That I’d ever let you into the royal family? Don’t even dream of it.”
I nearly laughed from the sheer absurdity.
In the last life, he had caused my brutal death. And now, he had blinded me. I’d have to be insane to want to marry him.
I took a deep breath and stared at him with my bloodied, sightless eyes.
“If I’m lying, Your Highness can investigate it for yourself.”
Alaric hesitated for a brief second when our eyes met, as if something had unsettled him.
Lyanna bit her lip and grabbed his arm.
“Your Highness, how can you believe anything she says? She’s just trying to stall for time. You mustn’t fall for it!”
Alaric paused, clearly torn, then gave the order to have me taken away.
“Elira, if I find out you had anything to do with this–I won’t let you go.”
At his words, Lyanna turned to look at me, her gaze laced with cold malice.
