Chapter 67

Wendy and Shirley exchanged a brief glance but chose to remain silent.

“Wendy, Shirley, both of you should consider taking a few extra days off work this month,” Maggie said, addressing them both.

“Spend some time helping Frankie with his studies. Especially you, Shirley. You’re a university professor, and you have connections at your school. I’ve heard that some of the professors at Kepong University were involved in setting the SATS questions this year. See if you can find anything useful.” She looked at Shirley

Shirley’s expression shifted immediately, and she quickly replied, “Mom, how can anyone casually dig up information about the exam questions? That’s top–secret information!”

“You don’t have to get the exact questions,” Maggie said firmly, her tone brooking no argument. “Just probe a bit and see if you can get a sense of what might be on the test. Knowing the focus areas will help us prepare Frankie better.”

Seeing no way out of it, Shirley relented with a sigh. “Fine, I’ll reach out to my contacts and see what I can learn. But if I can’t find anything, you can’t hold it against me.”

“Good. And since your teaching schedule isn’t as demanding, take a few more days off and come home to help out. Frankie needs your guidance. Wendy, that goes for you too. Push aside your work at the company for now. Nothing is more important this month than his SATs,” Maggie said, shifting her gaze to Wendy.

Wendy hesitated before responding, “Mom, I can help tutor Frankie, but… What about Joshua?”

The room went silent for a moment as Maggie froze, clearly unprepared for the mention of Joshua.

“Mom, you haven’t forgotten that he is also taking the SATs, have you?” Wendy pressed cautiously.

“Why are you bringing up that rebel?” Maggie’s expression darkened instantly, her voice rising with irritation. “Just mentioning him infuriates me!”

“Mom,” Wendy said, her tone gentle but insistent, “you’ve been preparing all those expensive supplements for Frankie, even importing some at a high price. Shouldn’t Joshua also get some? His health isn’t great either.”

“Prepare him some supplements?” Maggie snapped, her voice laced with disbelief and anger. “Does he deserve such things? Wendy, do you not see what he’s done? He dared to point a knife at me and your father! Such ungrateful behavior! I wouldn’t give him a single morsel of those supplements!”

Her fury seemed to grow with every word, and Wendy faltered, unsure of how to respond.

“Don’t waste your time worrying about him,” Maggie said coldly. “That rebellious son will come crawling back to me eventually. And when he does, I’ll make sure to teach him a lesson he’ll never forget. If I don’t fix his attitude this time, I won’t be worthy of being a Fraser!”

“But, Mom,” Wendy began hesitantly, “if he doesn’t get the same support, what if he performs poorly on the exams?”

“And what if he does?” Maggie sneered. “Even if he performs well, how far could he possibly go? He’s at some second–rate school like 27th Street High. Even if he’s at the top of his class there, what does it matter? Could he get into Northbright University or even any prestigious university?”

Her disdain was visible as she continued, “He’s nothing but a hopeless case. Let’s see how he manages out there on his own. Without the Fraser Family’s support, he’s absolutely nothing!”

As she spoke, she turned a sharp gaze toward Wendy and Shirley. “Don’t think I’m being harsh by not feeding him properly. If he had even half of Frankie’s discipline, work ethic, or basic respect, I wouldn’t have to go this far! But look at him! He’s becoming more defiant and out of control with every passing day!”

“Mom,” Wendy ventured cautiously, “you only gave him 70 dollars a month before. How could that possibly be enough for him to live on?”

“How could it not be enough?” Maggie’s snapped, her irritation bubbling to the surface. “70 dollars is plenty for pocket money! He could eat at home, or he wouldn’t go hungry! And look at him now, even with that allowance, he’s turned into this ungrateful troublemaker who dares to threaten us. If I gave him more, can you imagine the havoc he would wreak?”

Her anger grew more intense, her voice dripping with frustration. “I know he picked up bad habits from his time in the orphanage, deep–seated ones that are hard to get rid of. If we don’t put a stop to it, he’ll amount to nothing. And now, when I try to set him straight, he has the audacity to fight back? I’ve already spoken to your father, and we’re not letting him get away with this any longer. He’s going to learn the hard way this time!”

“But, Mom,” Wendy said gently, trying to reason with her, “you can’t just disregard his SATS. If he doesn’t pass, what’s going to happen to his future?”

“And if he doesn’t pass, so what?” Maggie shot back, her tone sharp as a knife. “It’s his fault! Don’t start defending him, Wendy. Have you been seeing him again?”

Wendy hesitated for a moment before nodding reluctantly.

“I knew it!” Maggie’s voice was icy, her lips curling into a smirk. “If you hadn’t gone to see him, he’d have come crawling back by now. Let me make this clear, Wendy. You are not to see him anymore. I want to see how long he thinks he can keep this up before he finally gives in!”

Shirley, sensing the growing tension, quickly spoke up. “Mom, Wendy is just worried about Joshua’s SATs. You said in the group chat just a couple of weeks ago we should prioritize the SATs above everything else. Joshua also has to take the SATs!”

Maggie turned her gaze to her, her expression hardening further. Her voice was sharp and almost mocking. Do you think his grades are worth anything? Do you honestly believe he can accomplish anything with his track record? I told you not to get your hopes up for him! I asked you to pay attention to the college entrance examination because I hope you can tutor Frankie! Now his test is the most important! As for Joshua, I have a way to deal with him!”
