“There’s nothing shady here! Who are you people, and why are you asking about his grades?”
“I’m his mom!” Maggie snapped.
The official was taken aback. “Joshua has parents? I thought he was an orphan. I heard he grew up in an orphanage.”
She scrutinized the trio, their extravagant clothing and jewelry making it obvious they weren’t from humble. backgrounds, which only added to her shock.
“You’re all dressed so nicely, yet you claim to be Joshua’s family? Don’t joke with me. Joshua only had his school uniform to wear and didn’t even own a basic cotton T–shirt. I heard he barely had enough to eat. His teachers often invited him to their homes for meals. Ms. Quinton, for example, frequently had him over for dinner.”
“He went to his teachers‘ houses for meals?” Wendy gasped.
The official nodded. “Joshua is an exceptional student with excellent grades, but he’s an orphan with no financial support. When the teachers found out, they felt sorry for him and often treated him to meals. If you really are his family and live so extravagantly, why didn’t you provide for him? You must be impostors!”
The accusation left the trio speechless, their faces pale with embarrassment.
“I don’t care who you claim to be. You’re not to disrupt Joshua’s studies. The SATs are just around the corner, and any interference is unacceptable! Besides, Joshua has already told us he has no family. He said his family passed away eighteen years ago. Stop coming here looking for him!” The official’s scowl deepened as their silence stretched on.
Maggie’s fury boiled over. “If you refuse to tell me his grades, I’ll call the police!”

Fuming, Maggie stormed out of the office and immediately called the police.

Wendy stayed silent, unsure how to respond to her mom’s outburst.
“Let’s go home. Call Shirley, Maddy, Judy, and the others. Tell them not to give Joshua a single cent. I’ll make sure he doesn’t survive out there!” Maggie had nowhere to vent her anger.
Wendy glanced at David, but to her surprise, he said, “Good grades don’t excuse his behavior. Joshua clearly lacks discipline. If he had the nerve to pull a knife on his own parents, who knows what else might he do? Let’s go back and figure out how to teach him a proper lesson.”
Wendy had hoped her dad might stand up for what was right, but his words left her uncertain about what to do next.
