Chapter 52
Shirley suddenly remembered something, and her body trembled violently.
She continued reading.
Because Shirley was hosting a party at home and had invited many friends, she didn’t allow Joshua to return. and told him to stay outside.
That day, it happened to rain heavily, and the weather was cold. Joshua appeared to have waited in a pavilion. outside the house, spending most of the night there.
Shirley remembered the events of that day vividly. Inside, they sang, played games, and laughed together, creating a noisy, lively atmosphere.
She had completely forgotten that her brother was outside, waiting for the birthday party to end.
The reason was simple–she was embarrassed by him and didn’t want to introduce him in front of her friends, afraid he might embarrass her.
Suddenly, Shirley felt a sharp pang in her chest. She had never thought she was being unreasonable, after all, he had been so filthy; it was shameful.
But now, looking back, she realized how cruel she had been. It would be shameful to even mention that she had once studied abroad.
Shirley also remembered slapping Joshua.
It was the second time she had hosted a gathering for her friends. She invited them over, and suddenly, Joshua appeared on the second floor, where her friends saw him.
Her friends, not knowing who he was, asked Shirley to introduce him. Shirley simply told them he was the servant’s child, never admitting Joshua was her brother.
Joshua seemed embarrassed but didn’t offer an explanation. One of her friends found him amusing and decided to tease him. She spilled her drink on the floor and told him to clean it up, then intentionally spilled some on him as well.
Joshua didn’t get angry; he just seemed awkward. Upon seeing this, her friend mocked him for having a good temper, calling him a good boy.
Later, Shirley’s friends instructed Joshua to serve them drinks and snacks, attending to them as they ate and drank.
Shirley felt insulted, especially when she saw Joshua behaving so obsequiously toward her friends. Furious, she immediately approached him and slapped him hard across the face.
“Don’t go near my friends! You’ve embarrassed me horribly today! You weren’t even supposed to be home- how did you show up out of nowhere? How shameful! You’re truly disgraceful! I’ve never seen anyone so humiliating! If I ever have guests again, stay far away! I never want to see you again!”
After she finished shouting, Joshua stood frozen, pale, and trembling, his face filled with terror.
“I–I’m sorry!” he stammered in panic.
“Sorry means nothing! If apologies were enough, what would the law be for? I’m telling you, don’t ever come near my school again! I never want to see you again! Don’t touch my car–if you damage it, you won’t be able to afford to fix it! Don’t let my friends see you–just get out of here!”
After saying that, Shirley stormed back to her room, leaving Joshua standing there, still filled with fear.

Chapter 52
From that moment on, he never went to her school again, never secretly attended her classes, and never touched her car. He only dared to watch from a distance and take photos from afar.
Those photos, taken from a distance, were filled with envy.
As for her gatherings with friends, Joshua never dared to meet them again.
“My family has long been gone! They died a long time ago–eighteen years ago, they’re all gone!”
Shirley trembled as those words echoed in her mind.
She couldn’t continue reading. A wave of panic washed over her as if someone had punched her chest, nearly suffocating her.
Quickly, she took out her phone and dialed Wendy.
“Wendy, I read part of the message! Is it the same on your end?”
Wendy, who seemed busy, hesitated for a moment before answering.
“Yeah,” she replied.
“Wendy, t–this is not my fault. It’s all because of…” Shirley trembled, unable to finish her sentence, struggling to justify herself.
Wendy replied sharply, “Because of what? Because he was an orphan? Because he lived like a cockroach? Because he had to beg for food in a filthy gutter? Or because he didn’t deserve to be our brother? Is he supposed to be an orphan forever?”
Shirley was stunned. “Wendy, I didn’t think that way! You’ve seen how filthy he used to be…”
