I jumped up from the bed, my heart beat frantic as I stared at the unfamiliar place–This was a hospital. I arched my head to the side and found Ariel lying beside me.
I reached out to her, but was distracted by the sound of footsteps which approached me. My eyes fixated on my parents drawing closer to me.
“You’re awake, Ryker. My mom beamed at me, but I could sense the sadness in her tone.
“Baby?” Ariel voice echoed from the other end. A smile formed on my face as I stared at her. She jumped on my body, pulling me into a tight hug. I chuckled before returning the embrace.
“I was starting to think you didn’t plan on waking up. She whispered into my ear, the worry in her voice evident.
I knew she was just being sarcastic. O couldn’t have been possibly out for that long
“It’s good you’re awake.” My dad muttered with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
Ariel cleared her throat, brushing her finger on my face with a sullen look. Something was off, especially with my g parents standing close by,
I changed my guardian from Kaiden to Ariel after we started living together. She wouldn’t have possibly called my parents over except it was life threatening and I didn’t feel that way. I didn’t feel any pain on my leg which was casted, and it was the only noticeable injury I could find.
“Where’s Derek?” I asked in panic when realization finally hit me. We were both involved in an accident, and my parents had always been Derek’s guardian
The room turned quiet like a graveyard. I narrowed my eyes in suspicion as they all looked down. Ariel dropped her hand down, looking anywhere but me.
“Where the fuck is Derek?” I repeated again through gritted teeth, but I got no response. They remained silent and Ariel gor off the bed.
I clenched my fist in anger, shaking off the disturbing thoughts from my head. No, Derek is fine. He’s probably just asleep.
I hated being ignored for any reason and they were doing exactly that.I hastily got up from the bed which seemed to draw their attention back to me.
“Where are you going, Ryker?” My mom eyes widened in surprise as I pushed past her.
I ignored her, marching towards the front desk until my dad blocked my path. I shoot him an irritated glare. “Step aside, Dad. I warned in an edge in my voice
“How about you go back to bed?” My dad offered with a gentle smile.
I chuckled darkly, my eyes glinting in amusement. “So you’re finally found your voice, huh!” I mocked with a raised brow
“Honey My mom caressed my back but I shook it off, turning around to look at her.
“Don’t, Mom!” I warned in anger. That was the same tone she used in lying to me about Keira’s death.
“All I want to know is where Derek is.” I said, exhaling to calm my anger.
“Baby, How about you sit down and let us talk?” Ariel suggested, grabbing my hand and rubbing her fingers inside my palm.

I glanced at her, nodding my head in agreement. She smiled at me before pulling me back to the bed and forcing me to sit on it. She sat close to me, rubbing my back soothingly with a disturbing smile.
Something was certainly wrong.
“Start talking “I commanded. staring at my parents in particular.
My mom tried to say something, probably complain about how I was being harsh to them, but my dad stopped her, shaking his head in disapproval
“As you already know, you were both involved in an accident” My dad began and I resisted the urge to lash at him. If anything. I was the one to tell them about the accident, not the other way round.
I nodded regardless, urging him to continue. “Derek’s accident was quite severe.” He added and 1 felt my heart drop.
“His skull was affected, and his chest crushed, making it hard for him to breath.” He continued, his gaze falling to the floor before he looked back up with a forced smile.
“It was too much for his body to heal. His voice cracked slightly, pausing to catch his breath.
“The doctor tried his best, but he couldn’t save him. My mom concluded, breaking down with tears rolling down her chin.
I chuckled, trying to process their words which made no sense to me. “What exactly are you saying, Mom?” I snarled, staring at them but they couldn’t meet my gaze.
“What your mom is trying to say. Ariel interjected, taking in big gulp of breathe before continuing, “is that Derek is gone.” She ended in a low tone.
My blood ran cold in shock as the words fell out of her lips. Was this some sort of joke? Derek was dead? I just saw him some hours ago!
“Ryker?” Ariel shook my body in worry, but I ignored her. My head spinning with different thoughts and emotions but one was unmistakable–anger.
“Honey?” My mom called this time, stepping closer to me. I shut my eyes, drawing in a sharp breath before opening them with a cold smile on my face.
“I’m fine.” I assured staring at her with indifference but I was far from fine. “How long have been out?” I asked steering the conversation away. They seemed stunned by my response, obviously not expecting this.
“24 hours.” My dad managed to respond, narrowing his eyes. I nodded in understanding.
Twenty four hours hack, he was still alive, but I had failed to save Derek. If I had stopped him before he got into that car. then he wouldn’t have still been here. There was only one person to be blamed for this–Kaiden. If he hadn’t killed Layla, and kept his mouth shut about it after he did, then Derek would have still be alive.
Each time a pack member died, the Alpha was informed about it and it’s been twenty four hours already, yet Kaiden wasn’t here. It only meant one thing, he wasn’t aware of Derek’s demise. He was probably somewhere drowning himself with thoughts of Aurora as always
I let out a hollow laugh amidst the tension. I saw the way my parents and Ariel exchanged glances, but they said nothing. I jolted up from the bed and stormed out in fury, ignoring their protests. I needed to punch something, someone.
