Chapter 96

Ariel

My heart pounded in fear as entered the emergency room. I scan the room before my eyes landed on Ryker lying on the bed unconscious with deep cuts around his face and a cast on his right leg. I brushed my finger around his face, my chest feeling tight until I caught sight of Derek lying on the bed next to him.

Were they both involved in the accident?

Derek was barely recognizable. His body was badly injured, his clothes covered in his own blood. There was a bandage over his head and his chest seemed to have been compressed. There was an oxygen mask assisting his breathing, and a monitor which displayed his heart rate. I slowly walked past Ryker to Derek’s bed. I could hear a heartbeat, but it was faint–very

faint.

When I received the call from the hospital concerning an accident, I didn’t know what to expect, but I definitely didn’t think it would be this severe. At that point, I was happy Ryker wasn’t the one in such state. Ryker will be fine after some patches. He will heal in time.

Larched my neck to the sound of the voices drawing closer to me. It was Ryker’s parents being guided to towards me.

“Ariel.” Ryker’s Mom exclaimed in seeing me. An awkward smile etched to my face. We weren’t close and even after I started dating Ryker. I wasn’t too keen on forcing a relationship with his family and he thankfully didn’t force me.

“Good day, Mrs Slade” I responded politely. She hummed in response before staring at Derek. Her face showed visible fear for her son’s life as she bent slightly to get a clearer view of him.

“Why are you here?” Ryker’s Dad asked bluntly, arching a brow in suspicion while rubbing his wife’s back soothingly.

Yeah. They probably thought it was only Derek who was involved in an accident just as I believed it was only Ryker. I was Ryker’s guardian which was surprising.

“My baby.” Ryker’s Mom whimpered, clutching onto Derek’s hand. I felt sorry for her. Both of her sons were in hospitalized same day with one having low chances of life.

“It’s okay, honey. Derek will be fine.” Mr Slade said softly, but there was doubt in his eyes. He was trying to keep a strong facade, but anyone could see he was hurt.

I didn’t know how to tell them about Ryker. My body hid him from them so they couldn’t see him. I know Ryker had some fallout with his family because of Keira. However they were still family regardless and deserve to know.

I let out a deep breath before stepping aside and revealing Ryker. Mr Slade started at me with confusion before his confusion turned into bewilderment.

“Ryker?” He muttered to confirm his vision with a wrinkles eyes,

“What happened Mrs Slade started with irritation, but her voice died down when her eyes stared at the sight in front of her.

“Why is he here?” She whispered in doubt, walking over to his bed. It wasn’t hard to guess that the both brothers were involved in the accident but for her, it would be difficult to accept such reality.

“He got into an accident.” I informed, my lips drawn into a thin line.

She nodded wordlessly, sucking in breath as she tried to maintain a calm demeanor. “Calm down, honey.” Mr Slade mumbled with a tight smile.

“Our children are in the hospital..” Her voice cracked with tears as she held Ryker’s hand.

Chapter 96

I sighed, taking a step forward to exit the room for them. This was their family hard time and I wasn’t family. I was already one step out when I heard the low beeping of the machine.

My heart jumped out of my chest as I spun around. It was Derek, his body was shaking violently

“Derek, please don’t this Mr Slade said with pain in his tone. Two nurses came rushing into the room with confusion on

their faces

“Please step aside ma’am” The instructed us but Mrs Slade shook her head stubbornly.

“Save my son” She cried, gabbing the nurse’s hand in desperation. Her husband had to drag her out of the room.

One of the nurses soon ran out of the room, maybe to bring the door. Mrs Slade was already crying violently against her husband’s chest. I felt a sting in my heart. Ryker was just starting to get closer to his brother again, and now Derek.was dying This was break his heart.

The doctor came running with the nurse leading in front. He instantly checked some vitals while screaming for an emergency surgery be prepared.

That was until the beeping alarm went out. I arched my head to Mrs Slade direction and she seemed to have

100 volts. I heard the doctor instructed over the tension but I knew better than to hope. There was no heartbeat anymore.

“Mrs Slade” I called out, slowly strolling to her. She didn’t respond, her eyes were widely opened without any color in them. I reached out for her, but she was numb to any touch.

Mr Slade shook his head a subtly way of telling me to let her be.

“Time of death?” The doctor asked and that was when she lost it. Mrs Slade collapsed, but her husband caught her before she could hit the floor.

9:25 Am.” The nurse announced and the doctor nodded before it was recorded. It was only after it was announced to us did.
