Chapter 9

Kaiden

When I saw Ariel standing in the entrance door with Ryker just behind her, rage flared inside me. This was not how I wanted her to find out about Aurora–hell, I never wanted her to know about Aurora at all. Seeing her with Ryker, I could already piece together what had happened. That didn’t stop the anger from boiling over, though, as I wondered how he could have been so reckless. He knew exactly how Ariel was.

She strutted toward me with a smirk that set my teeth on edge. The only thing I could think to do was drag her into my room. As soon as the door slammed shut behind us, I turned on her, not bothering to hide my fury.

“What the fuck are you doing here, Ariel?” I snapped, my voice low but cutting

Her lips twisted into a wicked smile as she stepped closer, her finger tracing the line of my chest up to my jaw. “I didn’t know you were into silver–haired human bitches now, Kaiden,” she spat, her narrowed eyes locking onto mine. Her hand lingered on my face, but I smacked it away without hesitation.

Shadow, my wolf, growled in the back of my mind at the insult she’d thrown at our mate. My jaw tightened as I fought to keep control.

“That still doesn’t answer the question. What are you doing here?” I demanded again, my voice sharp and commanding

Ariel’s smirk only deepened as she strolled over to my bed and sat down, clearly enjoying the chaos she was causing “Let’s just say I wanted to see what’s been keeping my man so busy that he’s forgotten I exist.” Her tone dripped with venom. “So, I followed Ryker, though I must say I wasn’t expecting what I saw.”

I cursed Ryker silently. A werewolf of his kind should’ve sensed her following him. Then again, Ariel wasn’t just any werewolf, she was the strongest female amongst my pack.

She leaned back slightly, tilting her head as her mocking tone cut through the tension. “So, tell me, baby, did you like the taste of her lips? Thinking about fucking her, aren’t you?” Jealousy laced every word, no matter how hard she tried to sound casual.

“You’ve got no fucking right to ask me that,” I snapped, my voice as sharp as a whip. “I’m still your Alpha, Ariel, even if I’m fucking you.”

Her laughter was harsh and humorless. “Some Alpha you are,” she sneered, rising to her feet and stepping closer. “Ignoring your pack, forgetting your responsibilities, all to play lover boy for some silver–haired human bitch. Wouldn’t the world love to know how the great and powerful Alpha Kaiden Thane is infatuated with someone who looks like a goddamn slave?”

The words were barely out of her mouth before I snarled, my voice rough with anger. “Don’t talk about her like that.” The growl escaped me before I could stop it, my control slipping.

“See how worked up you are over her,” Ariel said with a mocking smile, stepping closer. “Sure, she’s your mate, but she’s still human, baby. What was the Moon Goddess even thinking, pairing you with someone like that?” Her words echoed the same doubts I’d been asking myself. It was obvious Aurora was my mate; I wouldn’t be with her otherwise.

“And why are you wasting your time with her, Kaiden?” Ariel continued, circling me slowly. “She’s human, and you’re a werewolf. You can’t even mate with her, and she’s weak on top of that. What do you think she’ll do when she finds out what you are? Or maybe I should just tell her myself.” She paused, her smirk growing crueler. “Better still, I could tell the pack. Let’s see how they react to having a human Luna.”

Her words hung in the air like poison, and she reached up to touch my face again, her fingers brushing my jaw. Shadow growled in my head, and I clenched my fists.

“Don’t tell me you’re actually thinking about giving up everything just to stay with her,” she sneered. “Has the great Alpha Kaiden Thane really fallen for his mate?”

Chapter 9

Her words cut deep because part of me knew she was right. I had no idea what I was doing anymore. I didn’t know why I needed Aurora dose, only that I did I wanted to protect her, but I couldn’t let Ariel or anyone else see how much she meant to me. I’d made too many enemies, and they’d use her against me without a second thought.

“No,” I said coldly, looking her dead in the eye. “I’m not falling for her. She’s just a mute human I’m helping, nothing more”

Ariel laughed sharply, like I’d told a joke. Then she stepped closer, leaning in so her lipsbrushed against my ear. “Then I guess you wouldn’t care if I killed her, right, baby?” she whispered, her tone mocking

Shadow growled again, louder this time, but I kept myself calm.

“Just as I thought,” she said, smug satisfaction all over her face. “You’re coming back to the pack house with me. You need to be far away from her so you can get your head straight. Ryker can take care of her” Her smile faded into a glare. “But if you refuse, don’t blame me for doing what has to be done. You don’t have time to fall in love.”

1 glared at her, my voice low. “Are you threatening me, Ariel?”

“Of course not,” she said sweetly, though the look in her eyes said otherwise. “I’m just helping you. You’re so blinded by the mate bond that you can’t see how much danger you’re putting her in”

She wasn’t wrong, and that made it worse. Being with Aurora was a risk I couldn’t afford, but the thought of staying away from her made my chest tighten. Still, I couldn’t let Ariel see my weakness.

I exhaled slowly, shoving the anger down. Ariel stepped closer, kissing me lightly. It made me feel sick, but I didn’t stop her. Her hands slid around my neck as she whispered, “You know I’m right, baby.”

“Yes,” I said, my voice flat. “I’ll go with you, but I need to talk to Ryker first.”

Her eyes lit up with satisfaction, and she kissed me again. “I knew you’d make the right choice,” she said, pulling back.

I grabbed her wrist and walked to the door, opening it without a word. As I stepped into the hallway, my eyes met Aurora’s. She was standing there, her expression full of hurt and confusion.

Ariel didn’t miss the chance to make things worse. She pulled me into another kiss, slow and deliberate. I didn’t stop her. I leaned into it, rough and cold. I felt the pain in Aurora’s heart cut into me, but I let it happen.

Because that’s what I was. An asshole.

Ariel pulled away from the kiss with a smug grin and strolled into the living room, where Aurora sat quietly. I could already tell she was heading straight for trouble. She dropped onto the seat Ryker had just vacated, her eyes gleaming with mischief.

“Hi, dear,” Ariel said sweetly, though her tone was anything but kind. “I don’t think we’ve met before. I’m Kaiden’s girlfriend.” She extended her hand with a wide smile.

I watched Aurora cautiously reach out to shake her hand, but Ariel pulled hers back at the last moment, a mocking glint in her eyes. “Oh, that’s right–you can’t talk,” she added with a cruel laugh.

rage, I saw the pain flash across Aurora’s face, and it twisted something deep inside me. My wolf, Shadow, snarled in forced myself to stay calm. Acting out now would only make things worse. Swallowing my anger, I turned to Ryker.

“Ryker,” I called out sharply, walking back into the room. He followed me silently into my bedroom, and the moment the door shut, I swung a fist into his jaw.

“What the hell were you thinking, coming here when I specifically told you not to?” I growled as he straightened up, rubbing his jaw.

“I’m sorry,” he began, his tone serious, “but we had an emergency in the pack. Some of our warriors were found dead nearby.”

I took a deep breath, trying to control my temper. “That’s what phones are for, Ryker,” I snapped.

“Well, maybe if your phone wasn’t going straight to voicemail, I wouldn’t have had to come here,” he shot back sarcastically.

I glared at him, unimpressed. “Save the excuses. And don’t let it happen again. You led Ariel here, and you know exactly how she is.”

“I didn’t know she followed me until I was already here,” Ryker said, his tone apologetic. “I’m sorry for that.”

“I’m going back to the pack house,” I informed cutting him off. “And I won’t be coming back anytime soon. In the meantime, take care of Aurora. Make sure nothing happens to her, not a single hair out of place. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Alpha,” Ryker replied firmly.

Satisfied, I opened the door and stepped back into the living room. Ariel rushed toward me, wrapping her arms around me tightly as she tilted her face up to mine.

“Are we leaving now?” Ariel asked loudly, her voice dripping with smugness, clearly intending for Aurora to hear.

I glanced at Aurora, whose watery eyes betrayed the pain she was trying so hard to hide. I heard every word of their conversation, thanks to my sharp hearing. My chest tightened, but I kept my expression cold.

“Yeah,” I replied shortly, guiding Ariel toward the door with an arm around her.

Once we were outside the apartment, I spun on Ariel and grabbed her face roughly, slamming her against the wall. Her gasp of shock was satisfying, but not enough to ease my fury.

“The next time you lay a finger on her,” I growled in my alpha voice, “or disrespect her like that again, I will make you regret it. Don’t test my patience, Ariel.”

Her wide, frightened eyes told me my point had been made. I released her and walked away without a second glance, not caring whether or not she followed.
