Chapter 7

Aurora

1 fluttered my eyes open, greeted by the white ceiling and the warm rays of the sun peeking through the window. As I wiped the remnants of sleep from my eyes, I tried to sit up, but a strong arm wrapped around my waist held me back. Panic set in as I struggled to free myself, my mind screaming danger. But my efforts were almost vain as the grip tightened.

“Stop moving so much, Aurora,” a hoarse, stern voice commanded from behind me. I froze, shocked to hear Kaiden’s voice. I snapped my head slightly to stare at his face, which was surprisingly handsome despite his disheveled state.

“If you keep moving like that, you’re going to wake up something you can’t handle,” he reprimanded, his eyes glinting with at warning. I stared at him, confusion giving way to realization as I grasped the implication of his words. My face flushed with embarrassment as I looked away, my mind racing with questions. Why was Kaiden in my room, in my bed?

“You’re probably wondering why I’m in your bed, right, love?” he asked, his voice low and smooth, the pet name sending a flutter through my chest. I mentally scolded myself, trying to shake off the strange sensation. After all, Kaiden was still the man who had bought me, even if he and Ryker had treated me with unexpected kindness.

As I glanced back at Kaiden, I noticed the hint of a smile on his lips, a rare sight. It was clear that this was the most civil conversation we’d had since I arrived, and I found myself wondering what had brought about this change in him.

I nodded in response to Kaiden’s question, and his lips twitched slightly before he removed his hands from my waist. He sat up, his expression serious as he stared at me. His intense gaze made me feel frightened and worried that I might have done something wrong.

“You had a nightmare,” he explained, his voice low and rough. “You were restless, so I had to calm you down. That’s how I ended up in your bed.” His words seemed strained, as if he wasn’t used to explaining himself.

I nodded again, understanding. Nightmares were nothing new for me, but it was unusual for someone to care enough to intervene. I got up from the bed, intending to leave the

om, but Kaiden’s sharp tone stopped me in my tracks.

“Did I say I was finished?” he asked, his voice stern. I slowly turned around, my heart racing, and walked back to him. I sat down on the stool, creating some distance between us.

Kaiden’s gaze followed me, his eyes narrowing as he took in my actions. “I’ve told you several times, Aurora,” he said, his voice angry, “I won’t fucking hurt you. I’m not your family, so stop treating me like them. Now move closer.” His words were laced with frustration, but I couldn’t help flinching at his tone. My mind flashed back to my father’s outbursts, which always ended in physical harm.

Kaiden’s expression darkened as he realized his words had pushed me further away. He got up from the bed, his anger evident in his movements, and walked out of the room without a word, slamming the door behind him.

“Well, I’ll be leaving now, Aurora. Do take care of yourself.” Layla bided me as she stood by the entrance door.

“Do you have to go now?” I typed and showed her.

She chuckled lightly before saying, “In as much as I would love to stay, it’s already getting late and we both know I only stayed this long because no one was home.” She explained and I nodded

“Don’t worry I will come some other day okay when needed.” She assured patting my head gently and I smiled at her in response. She shut the door not without yelling, “Don’t open the door for anyone who isn’t Mr Thane or Ryker.”

After Kaiden’s outburst that morning, he had been absent for the rest of the day. Layla, however, had kept me company, acting more like an older sister than my babysitter or maid as he preferably said. Kaiden had assigned her to help me out with minor things when I need and couldn’t get, it was as though the forgot I was mute and not disabled. She was only here

when I neither of them were around.

Chapter 7

The silence after Layla left was oppressive, and I found myself missing Ryker’s visits. To pass the time, I decided to cook, something I was familiar with. As I worked in the kitchen, I heard the door open, and Kaiden walked in with a package in his hands.

“I got you some chocolate cake,” he announced, placing the pack on the table before sitting on the sofa, his eyes fixed on the

screen.

I stared at him, curious about his sudden change in behavior. Earlier, he had been angry with me, but now he seemed calm or so it seemed. I wondered how he knew I loved chocolate cake and suspected Layla might have told him.

As I set a plate of food in front of him, he caught my arm, his grip firm. “Sit and eat with me,” he commanded, leaving no room for argument. I sat beside him, holding my plate in my lap.

As we ate, I felt his piercing gaze on me, but he didn’t touch his food. “I’ll have mine when I’m sure you’ve eaten properly,” he said, sensing my confusion.

I set my plate down on the table and picked up my notepad, writing “Alright, sir.” But before I could show it to him, he grabbed my hands, his calm demeanor flickering to irritation. He threw the notepad away, the sound making me jump.

Kaiden cupped my face, his piercing gaze holding mine. “Use your words,” he commanded, his voice steady but firm. “You spoke yesterday when you had that nightmare. Don’t act like you can’t do it again.”

His words hit me like a jolt of electricity. I froze, stunned. I hadn’t spoken in year, but hearing him say it aloud ignited something inside me. Did I really talk?

Kaiden’s expression grew more intense, his tone laced with equal parts frustration and determination. “From now on, you’ll use your words. You’re not mute, Aurora and I won’t tolerate you acting mute anymore.” 

I couldn’t focus on his words anymore. My thoughts spiraled, wrapping tightly around what he had said, breaking apart the walls I’d built over the years. 

“You’re driving me fucking crazy,” he growled, his tone snapping me out of my haze. “Fuck this.” Before I could even process what he meant, he closed the distance between us, his lips crashing against mine.

I froze. My eyes widened as the realization hit me–Kaiden was kissing me. His lips were demanding, feverish, pulling me under like a riptide. My body stiffened beneath him as his weight pressed me into the couch, his hand braced against the armrest. Slowly, as the shock subside, I let my eyes flutter shut. My lips began to move against his, hesitant and unsure, my inexperience glaringly obvious.

Then, just as abruptly as it started, Kaiden pulled away, the heat between us dissipating like smoke. He stood across the room in an instant, his hand dragging over his mouth as he muttered a sharp curse.

I sat up, bewildered, staring at him as confusion knotted in my chest. His expression twisted, and for a fleeting moment, disgust flickered across his face. He wiped at his lips, his movements jerky and tense.

“Fuck,” he rasped, his frustration palpable. “I shouldn’t have done that.” The words cut deep.

“Do I disgust you that much?” I said in a low tone, barely recognized the voice as my own. My eyes widened in shock at the realization–I had spoken. But I didn’t have time to process it before another voice cut through the tension.

“So this is what’s been keeping you so busy, baby?”

I turned to see a tall, curvy woman leaning casually against the doorway. Her arms were crossed, her sharp gaze flicking between Kaiden and me with disdain. Her presence radiated confidence and danger, and I shrank under her glare.

“What the fuck are you doing here, Ariel?” Kaiden snarled, his voice dripping with venom as his rage darkened his features.

If I thought Kaiden was intimidating before, the man standing in front of me now was terrifying. But woman who he referred to as Ariel didn’t seem fazed in the slightest. Instead, she smirked, her eyes gleaming with a wicked amusement that sent a chill down my spine. Ryker stood behind her with a blank expression.
