Chapter 29

Kaiden

Pain shot through my body the moment I opened my eyes, I was in my wolf form. The first thing I saw thing my eyes caught sight of when I turned was Ariel’s battered, unconscious body.

It didn’t take much to realize what had happened. I had done that to her. Though I didn’t know care about her, she was important for now. Gritting my teeth, I forced myself to shift back to my human form. The moment I tried to move, pain flared in my abdomen, and I collapsed back onto the hospital bed with a groan.

I pressed a hand against my side, hissing at the sharp sting. The bandages wrapped tightly around my lower abdomen told me enough–things must have spiraled out of control. Ariel probably had to use that silver bullet she always kept on hand for emergencies. It was the only explanation for why I was here, patched up like this.

“Alpha, you’re awake,” the pack doctor said, his voice a mix of relief and surprise as he entered the room.

I raised my head to glare at him. “How long have I been out?”

“Three days,” he replied.

I grunted and shifted my gaze back to Ariel. She looked harmless right now, her chest barely rising and falling. If she couldn’t hold me off any longer…. maybe her usefulness had reached its end.

“Don’t worry about her, Alpha,” he said hastily, mistaken my stare for concern. “I’ll make sure she pulls through.”

“Do what you must,” I commanded coldly, not telling him I cared less now.

When I tried to stand, pain shot through me again, nearly buckling my knees. The doctor stepped forward to help, but one glare from me made him retreat.

“Alpha, you should rest for a few more days. You need time to recover fully,” he insisted, his tone cautious but firm.

“I’m not some weak human,” I spat, ignoring the strain in my voice. “I’ll heal.”

The doctor said nothing more and instead fetched a robe, holding it out to me. I snatched it from his hands and wrapped it around my naked form, before dragging my aching body toward my quarters. I needed to get back to Aurora. I trusted Ryker to protect her while I was gone, but I couldn’t rely on him to hold off an army of werewolves if it came to that.

The knock on my door came just as I settled down. “Enter,” I growled.

Ryker stepped inside, concern etched on his face, though I felt only anger seeing him here instead of where I’d ordered him to stay.

“How are you feeling, Alpha?” he asked carefully.

I smirked darkly. “How I feel isn’t the problem,” I said, rising from my bed despite the ache in my muscles. “The problem is why you’re here and not where I told you to be.”

“Alpha, I-”

I cut him off with a fist to his jaw, the force of it sending him stumbling back.

“I told you to stay with Aurora until I returned. What did you do instead?” I asked, my voice low but lethal, watching him struggled to keep his footing.

“Kaiden, I can—” he began, but his attempt at an explanation only fueled the fire in my chest. My fist connected with his face again, the force of it sending a sharp pain ripping through my abdomen. I hissed in pain, clutching my side.

Chapter 29

“You’re not fully recovered,” Ryker said, his tone lined with concern as he watched me grimace. “You shouldn’t be pushing yourself like this.”

“You should’ve thought of that before leaving her side. You put her in danger, I roared, anger boiling over as I drove my fist into his abdomen with every ounce of strength I had left.

He’collapsed onto the floor, groaning as he clutched his stomach. “I just fucking recovered from my own wounds, he hissed through gritted teeth.

His words seized some of the anger in my chest. I straightened slowly and walked back to the bed slowly. “You could’ve said so earlier,” I muttered, shooting him a glance as I sat back down.

Ryker let out a bitter laugh as he dragged himself upright. “Maybe if you weren’t so Aurora–obsessed, you’d have let me explain,” he shot back.

My glare silenced him. “I may be injured, but don’t think I won’t beat the fuck out of you if you keep running your mouth.” My voice was low, a warning he didn’t dare challenge.

“Good,” I said after a moment, calming myself. “What happened?”

Ryker exhaled, his gaze shifting as he recounted the events. “You lost control. You attacked Ariel, badly and me as well. Ariel shot you to stop you from killing us both.” His explanation confirmed what I had already suspected.

“And Aurora?” I asked sharply. “When did you leave her side?”

Ryker hesitated, swallowing hard. His silence only added to my growing rage. “Three days ago,” he finally admitted. The incident happened three days back.”

I clenched my fists, my mind already racing with worst–case scenarios–Moon blood pack, Dr. Hall, Owen. The thought of either attacking her had me moving without hesitation. I ignored the sharp protests from my body as I pushed off the bed and strode toward the door.

“Kaiden, wait!” Ryker stepped into my path, his expression torn between frustration and worry.

“Move,” I growled, my voice dark and heavy with warning. “Unless you want me to reopen that wound myself.”

Ryker didn’t budge. “You’re injured. You can’t go,” he said firmly.

I glared at him with pure intensity. “If Dr. Hall attacks her while I’m here arguing with you, what then?” I shot back, shoving him out of the way.

“At least make yourself look presentable if you’re going,” he muttered, clearly trying to reason with me, but I had no patience for it.

“Rory’s driving you insane,” he mumbled as he followed behind me. “Whether you admit it or not, you love her.”

I didn’t bother correcting him. This was well beyond love. It was something far darker, more consuming. How she had creeped herself in my heart so effortlessly was a mystery even to me–but it didn’t matter. She was mine, and I would tear the world apart to keep her safe.

I stepped out of the car hurriedly with Ryker following closely behind, muttering warnings for me to be careful, but I wasn’t listening.

The elevator ride was unbearable. For the first time, it felt like taking the stairs might have been faster. When the doo finally slid open, I bolted out, heading straight for the apartment. Her scent hit me the moment I reached the door, soothing some of my anger–until another scent followed, one that didn’t belong to her.

I shot Ryker a sharp glance, and he nodded in silent understanding. I quickly swiped the key card and opened the door, my gaze immediately landing on Aurora. Relief swept over me at the sight of her, my lips curling into a faint smile. But it didn’t

Sitting far too close to her was him–Owen.

The bastard had the audacity to be in my home, near my mate. My jaw tightened, rage bubbling just beneath the surface,

“You’re back,” Aurora said, her tone neutral, lacking the excitement I had hoped for. Then again, I couldn’t blame her. I had left without a word.

“Happy to see you again, Alpha Kaiden,” Owen said, his voice oozing smugness as he met my glare. He was enjoying this, knowing full well I couldn’t lash out in Aurora’s presence.

“The feeling isn’t mutual,” I replied coldly, shooting him a look that could kill.

Owen’s lips twitched into a smirk before he turned back to Aurora. “I think it’s time for me to leave. I don’t feel particularly welcome here.” 

Aurora gave a small nod, watching as he stood from the sofa. My mind raced with questions. How had she gone from calling him ‘creepy‘ to inviting him into my home without my permission? Humans were something else. 

As Owen walked past me, he intentionally brushed against my shoulder. The gesture was small but meant to provoke, and it worked. Fury burned in my veins as I followed him out of the apartment, my fists clenched.

“How does it feel, Alpha?” he taunted, leaning casually against the wall as if he’d been waiting for me to follow.

I didn’t respond. Instead, I slammed him against the wall, my arm pressing hard against his chest. He tried to react, but I was faster, my claws grazing his neck in warning.

“Death is what you’ll feel if you don’t stay far away from her,” I growled, my voice low and menacing.

Owen’s smirk never wavered. “You should’ve thought about what we’d do to her before you sent Grace’s lifeless body back to us,” he spat, his words hitting their mark.

“You don’t get to threaten me ad get away with it,” I snapped mockingly, my lips curling into a dark smile. “That little ‘gift‘ was simply a thank–you for messing with me.”

Owen laughed, a sharp, hysterical sound that grated on my nerves. “Oh, thank you for the gift, Alpha. And I’ll be sure to repay your kindness for touching one of our own.”

“Don’t fucking touch Aurora,” I warned, my voice steady but ice–cold.

Owen’s grin widened, his next words dripping with malice. “Oh, I won’t hurt her… yet. The only thing I’ll do is make her scream my name as I fuck her.”

“You won’t fucking dare,” I snarled, my claws pressing deeper into his skin.

“But I already dared, Kaiden,” he said smugly. “Slowly, I’ll creep my way into her heart. When she’s completely mine, I’ll kill her and send her broken body back to you. What better way to hurt you than through her?”

My grip tightened, but the pain in my abdomen betrayed me. He noticed it immediately, a wicked glint in his eyes as he pushed my arm away with ease.

“Take care of that wound,” he said, his voice mocking with fake concern. “It’d be a shame if you died before I get to finish what I’ve started.”

He yanked my arms away from him, turning to leave “Open your eyes widely, Alpha. Watch as I make your mate fall for me.” He threatened lowly, brushing past me with smugness.
