I stared at Kaiden, his disheveled state. He was chained to the wall to keep him from lunging at me. I’d fed him wolfsbane before the full moon to weaken him, but even now, his claws were elongated, his ears sharpened–he was caught in a half- shift, neither fully human nor fully wolf. We were in the small cottage where we always stayed during the full moon, a place that had become both a sanctuary and a prison.

I should hate him for how he’d treated me since his mate surfaced. But I couldn’t. I just couldn’t. And he knew it. Kaiden knew I loved him too much, and he used that love to his advantage. He knew I’d still be here, helping him wrestle with his wolf’s rage during the full moon, even after he’d locked me up–knowing full well how much I despised confinement.

Every full moon, I risked my life to keep him sane, to stop him from losing control. My body was full of scars, each one a testament to the battles I’d fought for him. I’d nearly died once trying to keep him sane, but it didn’t matter. I believed he was worth it. I thought I had him. I thought I’d done enough to keep him. But when his mate came along, he cast me aside like I was nothing.

I clenched my fists. There was no way I’d let him go. Ever. He was mine, not that frail human’s. If I had to, I’d kill her to claim his heart completely. With her gone, he would have no choice but to be mine.

“Water.” Kaiden–or rather, his wolf, Shadow–demanded, glaring at me with his usual hostility. Shadow hated me, always had, because I kept him from running wild.

“You’re not getting any more water, Shadow,” I replied, wiping blood from my hand. He’d clawed me when I’d tried to give him some earlier. The wound was deep and would take a while to heal.

“How dare you disobey me? I said, get me water!” he snarled, yanking at the chains. His eyes glowed red with fury. Even weakened by wolfsbane, Kaiden was strong. Shadow, his wolf, was even stronger. It seemed the wolfsbane had little effect on him now, wearing off within an hour.

“You should save your strength, Shadow. Those chains are silver. You can’t break them,” I said, watching his futile attempts to free himself.

“How many times do I have to tell you to address me as Alpha?” he growled, his voice low and menacing. The chains creaked under the strain of his strength.

“Getting angry won’t get you water,” I shot back, rolling my eyes. There was no way I was putting myself within arm’s reach of him again.

“I want to see my mate. Unchain me.” His tone shifted, laced with a dangerous edge. He pulled harder at the chains, the cracks in the wall spreading. I highly doubted he even knew who his mate was because Shadow doesn’t remember anyone when he was wild, to him we were all his enemies.

Panic surged through me as I noticed the damage. “Fine! I’ll bring your mate. Just stop pulling on the chain!” I lied, desperate to stall him. I didn’t care about his so–called mate. If he killed her, he’d be doing us both a favor. But I still couldn’t bring her here because Kaiden would kill me for it.

He stilled, and for a fleeting moment, I thought my words had worked. But the glint in his eyes told me otherwise. A wicked laugh escaped his lips.

“You think I’m stupid enough to believe you?” he mocked darkly.

Before I could react, he ripped the chains from the wall with a deafening crack. My eyes widened in terror as I bolted for the door, but I didn’t get far. He caught me effortlessly, lifting me off the ground and slamming me into the hard wall.

Pain shot through my body as I crumpled to the floor. Gritting my teeth, I tried to get up, ready to fight, but his claws tore

my stomach before I could even raise my arms.

I screamed in agony as I collapsed to the floor, my vision blurring from the sharp pain tearing through my body. Shadow’s laugh echoed around the room, cold and cruel, like a true sadist savoring my suffering.

“I’ve always wanted you gone,” he sneered, his voice dripping with menace. “But you always find a way to survive. Not this time.” 

He bent down to my level, his glowing red eyes burning into mine as I whimpered and tried to crawl away. My weak attempts only seemed to amuse him further.

“You’re pathetic,” he growled, his claws digging into my face. I cried out as fire shot through my skin, but Shadow wasn’t done. He never was.

“Please…” I croaked, my voice barely a whisper. I knew he wasn’t bluffing this time–he intended to kill me. That was the difference between Kaiden and Shadow. Kaiden recognized allies and friends.

6 saw only prey.

“Shut up,” he spat, his claws pressing harder. “or I make this more painful than it has to be.”

Tears streamed down my face as he tore into the wound on my stomach, deepening it. The pain was excruciating, but I forced myself to hold on. I had been trained as a warrior, and I clung to that strength, even as my body screamed for release.

He wasn’t satisfied with just one wound. His claws ravaged me, leaving trails of pain across my skin. Blood soaked my entire dress, and I felt the fight draining from my body. A miracle was my only hope, but I knew none was coming. If I wanted to survive, I had to save myself.

Through the haze of pain, I croaked, “Your mate… she’s waiting for you.”

Shadow paused for a moment, a smirk curling his lips. “Try harder,” he said mockingly. His fingers closed around my neck, cutting off my air and sending me into a desperate panic.

I thought it was over until I heard footsteps. The door creaked open, and I caught sight of Ryker stepping into the room. Relief washed over me as Shadow’s grip loosened slightly.

“Alpha,” Ryker greeted cautiously, his sharp gaze flicking between me and Shadow, quickly piecing together what had happened.

Shadow glared at him with disdain. “At least someone here knows how to show respect,” he snarled, shooting me a cold look.

Ryker didn’t respond to the jab. I could see the tension in his stance, the way his muscles coiled as he prepared for a fight. Shadow, however, didn’t see Ryker as anything more than an obstacle.

“You don’t stand a chance against me,” Shadow said darkly, his lips curling into a dangerous grin.

Ryker lunged at him, the two wolves colliding in a fight of claws and snarls. I could only watch, helpless, as Ryker fought to subdue the beast that Kaiden had become.

Ryker was strong–strong enough to be Kaiden’s Beta–but Shadow was relentless. Blood stained Ryker’s shirt as Shadow tore into his abdomen and arm, while he remained unscathed. My heart sank as I realized Shadow was gaining the upper hand.

My eyes darted to the bed where I’d left the gun earlier, the one loaded with silver bullets. I always brought it as a precaution, though I’d never wanted to use it. Until now.

Dragging my battered body toward the bed, I reached for the gun. My hands shook from the pain as I aimed, struggling to steady my breath. I didn’t want to shot him considering how hard it would take him to heal, but I had no choice. Closing my eyes, I squeezed the trigger.

The gunshot echoed through the room, followed by a groan and the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor.

“What the fuck, Ariel?” Ryker shouted, his voice filled with anger and disbelief. “Was your plan to kill him?”

My eyes fluttered open, meeting Ryker’s furious glare. My gaze shifted to Shadow, now lying unconscious on the floor, my

shot had landed in his abdomen.

“Would you rather he killed us both?” I snapped weakly, my voice trembling from pain and exhaustion.

Ryker hissed in frustration, crouching beside me. “Are you okay?” he asked, his tone softening with concern.

“Do I look okay to you, Ryker?” I bit out, my frustration and pain boiling over.

He didn’t reply, but his expression darkened with worry. I couldn’t hold on any longer. The edges of my vision darkened, and the world slipped away as I succumbed to unconsciousness.
