I slipped out of bed that morning, careful not to disturb Aurora, my thoughts consumed by my plans for Dr. Hall and his accursed family.

I had barely reached the door when I heard her stir, her body twisting violently as her nightmares seized her. I hesitated, then turned back, crossing the room to her side. Sliding back into bed, I wrapped my arms around her trembling frame, her skin slick with sweat.

“I’m here, love,” I whispered, wiping the dampness from her face. “No one’s going to hurt you again.”

My voice seemed to soothe her. The tension in her body eased, her restless movements stilled–until she suddenly jolted awake, her eyes wild and unfocused as if still trapped in the horrors of her dream.

“You’re okay, love. You’re safe now,” I murmured, holding her face gently to steady her.

“Kaiden,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, as if she needed reassurance that it was truly me.

“I won’t let anyone hurt you again,” I promised, my voice firm with conviction. She nodded faintly, her breathing slowing as the terror ebbed away.

“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked cautiously, careful not to push too hard.

“No,” she replied quickly, shaking her head.

“That’s fine, love. When you’re ready, I’ll be here to listen,” I assured her softly. Her lips curved into a faint smile, her gratitude evident despite the lingering shadows in her eyes.

Her gaze drifted over me, finally noticing I was already dressed. “Are you going somewhere?” she asked, curiosity and concern mingling in her tone.

“Yes,” I answered simply, though I kept the full truth from her. She didn’t need to know I’d be gone for a week, retreating to the outskirts of town to face the full moon and the complications it always brought.

“Oh… something to deal with at the club?” she asked, clearly puzzled by the early hour.

“Yes, Aurora,” I confirmed, standing. “Remember, no strangers, and always let me know where you are.” My voice carried the weight of an order. She nodded obediently, though her concern was unmistakable.

I’d thought about hiring a guard for her, but it would be pointless. A human guard wouldn’t stand a chance against werewolves. Instead, I’d rely on the surveillance cameras I’d installed throughout the house. I’d rarely checked them before, but that was about to change.

“How about I make you something before you leave?” she asked suddenly, her voice hurried.

A smile tugged at my lips. Her concern mirrored mine, though the reasons differed. I never skipped meals willingly–but I was cautious, always. A single incident of silver poisoning had taught me the dangers of carelessness.

“When I’m back,” I said, avoiding her gaze as I turned toward the door. If I looked at her again, I wasn’t sure I’d have the will to leave.

Without another word, I left the apartment and slid into my car. The drive to Dr. Hall’s house was familiar–I’d been there before, first to coerce him into treating Aurora, then to abduct his wife as leverage.

The house was still when I arrived, the early hour cloaking it in silence. But faint sounds from inside told me they were already aware of my presence.

I walked up to the door with deliberate calm, my footsteps unhurried.

Knocking softly, I waited, my demeanor almost polite. Almost.

The door swung open almost instantly, and there he stood, the same man I’d seen weeks ago at the hospital. His face twisted in anger, and his voice was low and venomous as he growled, “Alpha Kaiden.”

“You must be Owen,” I said curtly, a sinister smile stretching across my face.

Dr. Hall stepped up beside him, forcing a nervous smile. “Alpha Kaiden, what brings you here?” he asked, his tone calm, though I could see the flicker of fear and anger in his eyes.

“I don’t appreciate being left standing at the door, Dr. Hall,” I replied mockingly.

Without a word, both men stepped aside, and I entered slowly, my movements deliberate. They followed behind me, closing the door.

“What can I get you?” Dr. Hall asked nervously as I made my way to the living room.

“Why? So you can finally get rid of me?” I asked, my tone sharp and mocking as I settled into the sofa. “Let’s not pretend you like me, Dr. Hall.”

“What do you want?” Owen snapped, his anger bubbling to the surface. He was impatient–something I’d thoroughly enjoy teaching him to control.

“That’s no way to address an Alpha,” I said calmly, though my smile held a dangerous edge.

“You are *not* my Alpha!” he snarled, his teeth bared in defiance.

“I think you both know why I’m here, Owen,” I said, pulling a small dagger from my pocket, its blade gleaming with wolfsbane. I turned it lazily in my hand. “You don’t creep out my mate and expect her not to tell me about it.”

“Yes, we wanted you to find us,” Dr. Hall said sharply, his calm facade slipping as his claws emerged.

“And here I am,” I said, my voice steady as my eyes flicked between them. The dagger danced between my fingers, a silent reminder of the consequences they faced.

“You didn’t fulfill your promise,” Dr. Hall said, his voice filled with anger.

I chuckled darkly. “And you thought the best way to handle that was to involve Aurora? How clever of you.”

“It worked, didn’t it? You’d have never come to me otherwise,” he snapped. “It wasn’t my plan to scare her, but when she appeared at my door, I couldn’t resist. After all, you took my wife, didn’t you? Why shouldn’t I take someone precious to you?”

“So much for her being ‘like a daughter‘ to you,” I said mockingly, throwing his own words back at him.

“You can’t blame him for that, Alpha Kaiden,” Owen interjected, his tone defiant. “You took his wife—probably killed her— when he upheld his end of the deal.”

“Did he really?” I asked, fixing Owen with a pointed glare.

“Yes, he did! He didn’t tell anyone about your mate!” Owen argued, his attempt at defiance pathetic.

“Good to know you count as no one,” I said sarcastically, smirking at his indignation.

“You wouldn’t have released Grace, even if he stayed silent,” Owen pressed, his voice smug.

I smiled darkly. “And what makes you think I’ll release her now?”

“Because you have a weakness,” Owen said, his tone dripping with arrogance. “Your mate. You’ll do anything to keep her safe, won’t you?”

“Since you know that,” I said softly, rising from the couch, “then you must know I’ll kill you,”

“No, you won’t,” he sneered, his confidence unwavering. “If you touch me, you’ll have thousands of people to deal with.”

I laughed coldly, the sound sharp and unsettling. With deliberate slowness, I pressed the edge of the knife against his face, dragging it just enough to leave a stinging cut. “You don’t threaten me, Owen. I couldn’t care less about thousands of people. I’ll take them all out if I must,” I said, my voice low and menacing. I watched with satisfaction as he winced, the pain of the wolfsbane–laced cut evident on his face.

“You might not care about them,” he hissed through clenched teeth, “but can you say the same about your mate? She’s human, after all–fragile, vulnerable.” He paused, his lips curling into a wicked grin. “Though, I must admit, I’ve taken quite a liking to her. She seems so… submissive. I bet she’d make an excellent-”

Before he could finish, my vision turned red.

“Don’t you fucking dare,” I growled, my voice low and dangerous as I pressed the dagger deeper into Owen’s chin. He yelped in pain, but his bitter laugh cut through the air like a challenge.

“Why? Did I hit a nerve, ‘Alpha‘? You haven’t even marked her yet. Maybe I should finish the job for you since you clearly can’t even bed her.” His taunt was like gasoline on the fire burning within me.

With a furious snarl, I slammed him against the wall, the force shaking the room. “You will keep my mate’s name out of your mouth–and out of your imagination,” I hissed, the blade now against his neck.

“Of course, Alpha,” he mocked, his grin widening despite the danger. “But if you don’t want anything to happen to your precious mate, you will return Grace to us.”

My jaw clenched, the war between my rage and reason raging within me. As much as I wanted to drive the dagger further, I couldn’t risk Aurora.

“You should have returned my wife peacefully,” Dr. Hall interjected from behind, his voice calm but laced with malice. “Then I wouldn’t have had to share Aurora’s existence with others.” 

I turned my glare on him, the weight of his words sinking in.

“I may not belong to a pack anymore, Alpha Kaiden, but I was once the Beta of the Moonblood Pack,” he continued. “They’ll do anything to help me reclaim my wife. Even if it means fighting you.”

“You’ll have your wife back before the day is over,” I whispered through gritted teeth, finally pulling the dagger away from Owen’s neck.

“I’ll hold you to your word, Alpha. If I don’t, don’t blame me for what happens next,” Dr. Hall replied with a smug smile.

I forced myself to remain calm, even as rage boiled beneath my skin. Without another word, I stormed out of the house and into my car. Slamming the door shut, I exhaled sharply, my grip tightening on the steering wheel. The nerve of them to threaten me.

“Ryker!” I roared as I burst into the pack house, my voice echoing through the halls. Pack members scattered like leaves in the wind, sensing the danger radiating off me.

I marched to Ryker’s door, pounding on it until it flew open. Ryker stood shirtless in the doorway, a woman behind him hastily pulling on clothes. I didn’t need to guess what I’d interrupted.

“Kaiden,” he said, surprise clear in his voice.

Her pleas turned to sobs as I drew my dagger. In one swift motion, 1 dragged the blade across her neck, ending her life. Her body crumpled to the floor, blood pooling beneath her.

“Ryker, stay with Aurora. Do not let her out of your sight for a second” 1 ordered, my tone leaving no room for argument. 

“Yes, Alpha,” he replied solemnly,

“Send her body back to Dr. Hall before dawn and release Ariel,” 1 commanded, sinking back into my throne.

“Yes, Alpha,” Ryker said, dragging Grace’s lifeless body away.

Dr. Hall wanted his wife back. Now he had her. If he thought threatening me was the way to gain leverage, he was sorely mistaken. 

“I was hoping you’d lose control and kill your mate in a fit of rage,” Ariel said sarcastically as she strolled into the room. “Shut your mouth, Ariel, unless you want to end up dead,” I snapped, shooting her a deadly glare.

Her smirk vanished as she realized I wasn’t in the mood for her games.

I stood and approached her. “Get what you need. I’ll be in the car waiting. Don’t keep me waiting long,” I warned, turning to leave.

From behind, I heard her mutter something under her breath, but I didn’t care. My focus was on enduring the full moon and returning to Aurora.

Now more than ever, I needed to protect her.
