Kaiden
I walked toward my room, feeling too tired to check if Aurora was there as I usually did, though her heartbeat assured me she was fine.
As I reached for the doorknob and began to enter my room, I paused, hearing Aurora’s footsteps approaching. I turned, already expecting her, and sure enough, she rushed over and froze when she realized I was watching her.
I raised an eyebrow. “What’s this about?” I asked, noting her unusual behavior.
“Oh, nothing,” she replied awkwardly, forcing a small smile. “I just wanted to make sure it’s you.”
“Well, now you know,” I said dismissively. “Go back to bed, Aurora.”
Her eyes flickered with disappointment, likely not expecting such a cold response from me. My mood dictated my actions, and my moods were as unpredictable as a storm.
“Go on, get some rest,” I said again, my tone firm.
She hesitated for a moment before blurting out, “Let’s sleep together.”
I stopped, her words hanging in the air. Though I knew she meant it innocently, sharing a bed for comfort but Shadow stirred inside me, excited by the idea of finally having what we wanted. I pushed him aside.
Pressing my lips into a thin line, I responded, “You shouldn’t throw yourself at me like that, Aurora. I’ll lose interest in you.”
Her face flushed. “I didn’t mean it like that,” she mumbled, her voice soft. “I just meant… on the same bed.”
I tilted my head, curious. “Why do you want to sleep with me?”
I enjoyed being near her, listening to her steady heartbeat and holding her as though she were something fragile, but I couldn’t understand her reasons.
“I think you already know why,” she said, avoiding my gaze as she fidgeted with her hands.
“No, I don’t,” I replied curtly.
“It’s because I like you, Kaiden,” she confessed, still not looking up. Her embarrassment was clear, this was likely the first time she’d felt this way about someone. A strange satisfaction filled me at being her first at everything. The thought of anyone else claiming her heart before me stirred a possessiveness I couldn’t ignore.
“I really like you a lot, Kaiden,” she added, stepping closer and finally meeting my eyes.
A small smile played at my lips. “Good to know you don’t need alcohol anymore to admit that,” I said calmly.
Her expression fell, hurt flashing across her face. “Don’t you like me too?” she asked softly, her voice filled with hope.
Like? That word was too small to describe my feelings. People might call it love, but I wasn’t sure what love was. How could I admit to something I didn’t understand?
I leaned down to her eye level, letting my fingers trace the soft curve of her face. “I don’t feel such clumsy emotions, Aurora,”
I said in a low voice.
Her breath hitched, and she asked, her voice trembling with frustration, “Then why do you keep confusing me if you don’t want me?”

I chuckled darkly. “I never said I didn’t want you, love.”

She blinked at me, confusion clouding her features. “You said you don’t feel the same. That means you don’t want me,” she stated.
“Do humans always lack comprehension, or is it just you?” I asked, irritation creeping into my voice.
“What?” she asked, clearly bewildered.
“Go to bed, Aurora,” I repeated coldly, standing upright. I turned back to my door, but she stopped me again.
“What exactly am I to you, Kaiden?” she demanded, her voice tinged with anger.
I sighed, my patience wearing thin. “Aurora, I really don’t have the energy for your tantrums tonight.”
“Tantrums?” she echoed, laughing bitterly. “Is that what you think this is?”
Her gaze burned into mine as she asked, “Why did you even buy me, Kaiden?”
My eyes narrowed, and my tone dropped dangerously low. “I didn’t realize you would’ve preferred dying at your family’s hands.”
“Is that the only reason, Kaiden?” she asked suspiciously, her tone challenging my patience. I laughed, not at her words, but at her audacity.
“I don’t know what you’re hoping to hear,” I replied coldly. “But I’m sorru to disappoint you but that is the only reason I ‘bought‘ you. Since you don’t seem to appreciate it, perhaps I should return you.”
The regret on her face was immediate, her expression softening as she realized her mistake. “I’m sorry, Kaiden,” she said quickly, her voice laced with guilt. “I shouldn’t have suggested you had an ulterior motive.”
I shook my head, suppressing the irritation building within me. She was human, after all, and humans were naturally suspicious creatures. “Do you still want to sleep with me?” I asked suddenly, cutting through the tension.
She nodded, her nervousness apparent.
I didn’t say another word. Instead, I opened my door and gestured for her to step inside. She hesitated, glancing between me and the open door, but finally walked in. I followed her, shutting the door behind us.
“Your room is so big,” she whispered, her eyes wandering over the decor. “And the decorations are beautiful.”
I allowed myself a small smile, shrugging off my suit jacket while observing her from behind. She turned to face me, and her wide–eyed gasp told me she hadn’t expected to see me standing there in just my briefs. Embarrassed, she looked away, but I didn’t bother commenting, walking past her into the bathroom.
As the sound of the shower filled the room, I could hear the rapid drumming of her heart. She was nervous–her every reaction gave her away. After a few minutes, I turned off the water and stepped out, wrapping a towel around my waist.
Her gaze snapped toward me the moment I emerged. “Do you plan on staring while I dress?” I teased lightly, watching as her embarrassment deepened.
“No!” she stammered, turning her back to me.
I didn’t mind her watching me. In fact, it amused me. Once dressed, I walked over to the bed and turned toward her. “Are you planning to stand there forever, Aurora?”
She hesitated, her eyes fixed on the bed as a hint of jealousy flickered in her expression. “You shared this bed with Ariel,” she stated flatly.

I raised a brow, intrigued by her sudden possessiveness. Humans could be territorial, it seemed, especially when it came to what–or who–they cared about. I found myself enjoying the way her jealousy flared over me.
“Does that make the bed beneath your standards now, since Ariel laid on it?” I mocked, rising to my feet.
“No,” she said quickly, flustered. “It’s not that. I just… I just think it’s a little disrespectful, you know? Staying in the same bed you shared with her…”
I could tell she was lying. Ariel didn’t matter to her. What mattered was me. Standing in front of her, I scooped her up into my arms without warning. She gasped, clearly startled, and I carried her to the bed, placing her down gently before leaning over her.
“I didn’t share the bed with Ariel,” I admitted. The relief on her face was immediate, her eyes lighting up as if she was trying to suppress her excitement.
“Then where did she sleep?” she asked cautiously, as though unsure if she could believe me.
I didn’t answer. Ariel had been persistent, refusing to leave even after I kicked her out of the bed. She’d opted to sleep on the floor, but I hadn’t cared enough to notice. Instead of responding, I laid on my back and tilted Aurora’s head so it rested against my chest. My fingers idly played with her hair.
“You say you don’t like me, but you keep confusing me, Kaiden,” she murmured, her fingers tracing patterns across my chest.
“If you’re tired of staying by my side, you’re free to leave,” I replied, my tone cold. Of course, the idea of letting her go was absurd. She had no idea I would never allow it.
“I stepped out today,” she admitted cautiously, her voice small as though she feared I’d lash out at her. I had told her to inform me of her whereabouts, though I’d placed no strict leash on her. I simply wanted to know where she was at all times. “I’m sorry for not telling you,” she added quickly. “But I didn’t think it was important. I was just with Layla.”
“Where did you go?” I asked, my tone light yet firm.
“Deville Hospital. Thank you for moving Layla’s father there and covering their medical bills,” Aurora said softly, her gratitude shining through. Then, with a small smile, she added, “You’re more kindhearted than you let on.”
I chuckled darkly. “Thanks for the compliment,” I replied, my tone dripping with sarcasm. She didn’t pick up on it, though. If only she knew the so–called act of kindness was carefully calculated. I didn’t care about Layla or her father. Everything I did was to ensure Aurora’s safety.
Firing Layla had been a punishment for taking Aurora to that club, but compensating her and paying her father’s medical bills served another purpose. It kept people focused on Layla instead of Aurora if anyone tried dig about my mate. Of course, Aurora didn’t need to know that.
“I had fun talking to her dad,” she added lightly. A small smile tugged at my lips. She was doing so much better now than when she first came here. That was why I’d brought Layla into the picture in the first place–Aurora needed a human companion.
But then her heartbeat quickened, spiking suddenly with unease. Something was wrong.
“You’re not telling me something, Aurora,” I said firmly, tilting her chin up to meet my gaze.
“What?” she asked absently, as if shaken from her thoughts.
“Did something happen while I was gone?” I pressed, watching her eyes for any sign of truth. The way they widened gave me
my answer.
“What happened?” I demanded, my alpha voice slipping out before I could stop myself.

Chapter 23
“I’m probably just being paranoid,” she started hesitantly, her uncertainty evident. I adjusted my position, my hand brushing her cheek, silently urging her to continue.
“Well…I went to see Dr. Hall…” she began, dragging the words out slowly, clearly observing my reaction. My expresses didn’t waver, though internally I cursed. Of course, this had something to do with Dr. Hall
“Go on,” I urged, my voice low.
“When I got to his office, there was someone else there,” she continued. “He said his name was Owen, Dr. Hall’s cousin, look to be around his late 20s. He referred to me as ‘Alpha Kaiden’s mate. What does that even mean?” she murmured, more no herself than me. My jaw clenched tightly as anger flared inside me. I had completely forgotten about his cousin.
Dr. Hall’s wife was still in my custody which made me forget about his cousin.
“I don’t know if I’m overthinking it, but he gave me the creeps,” Aurora admitted. “The way he stared at me..it was unsettling. And when Dr. Hall finally came out of his office and invited me in, I couldn’t bring myself to go. I just left.”
Her unease was clear, and though her fears may have seemed small to her, I knew better. This was a problem.
I forced a calm smile onto my face. “You did the right thing. From now on, don’t go near his office again, I commanded my thumb brushing gently over her cheek. She nodded, meek and obedient.
“Now close your eyes and go to sleep,” I ordered. She looked like she wanted to protest, but the sharp glare I shot her made her comply. Slowly, her eyelids fluttered shut.
I withdrew my hand from her face, my expression hardening. I needed to handle Dr. Hall and his cousin, and I needed to do it now. I couldn’t allow anyone to jeopardize her safety.
The full moon was now in two days, I would have to leave her side tomorrow. But first, I’d make sure no one posed a threat to her again.
