Chapter 22
Aurora
I woke to an empty bed, my chest tightening with dread. The thought of Kaiden going back to Ariel sent jealousy twisting in my gut. I didn’t care anymore about being the reason for their fallout—I wanted him, all of him, and I didn’t want to share.
I slid out of bed and crept toward the door, freezing when I nearly bumped into him. Kaiden stood there, his dark eyes locked on me, a crooked smile playing on his lips.
“Good morning, love,” he said smoothly.
“I thought you’d already left,” I murmured, my voice soft. My words carried a double meaning–had he left for work, or had he left me?
His smile deepened, the glint in his eyes almost teasing. “You don’t need to worry about me leaving you, Aurora. I’ll be around so long, you’ll end up begging me to go.”
As always he read my fears, I smiled. Was this his way of promising me something real?
“I don’t think I could ever get tired of you, Kaiden,” I replied, meeting his gaze.
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he leaned closer, his voice dropping to a dark, velvety whisper. “Let’s see if you’ll still say that when you learn my real identity.”
A chill raced down my spine. “What real identity?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.
Instead of responding, he pressed his lips against mine. The kiss was sudden and electric, but I quickly pulled away, covering my mouth in embarrassment.
“I didn’t realize we were back to pushing each other away,” he said, his tone unreadable. It was impossible to tell if he was angry or amused.
“No… it’s just…” I lowered my hands, my cheeks flushing. “I haven’t brushed my teeth yet.”
His smirk was sharp, but his eyes burned with a faint edge of frustration. “I don’t recall complaining, did I?”
Kaiden’s temper always lingered just beneath the surface, and I could sense the shift in him now. He hated it when I pulled away, as if it bruised some part of his ego. It was unsettling, but it was also intoxicating. He acted like he owned me—and maybe, in a way, he did. But the crazy part was, I didn’t mind.
“Are you just going to stand there?” he asked, pulling me from my thoughts.
I blinked and looked over to see him seated at the dining table. Breakfast was already laid out. When had he even moved?
Smiling, I walked over and sat down. A plate of perfectly golden pancakes sat before me. Did he make these for me? My heart fluttered at the thought.
I picked up my fork and took a bite, moaning softly at the rich, savory taste. It was perfect.
When I glanced up, Kaiden’s eyes were fixed on me, dark and intent. “You shouldn’t moan like that, love,” he said, his voice low and calm. “You’ll make me do something you’re not ready for.”
Heat crept up my neck. “The pancakes… they taste amazing, that’s all,” I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper.
He groaned, turning his attention back to his plate, but the tension lingered. I ate slower after that, feeling his gaze on me. By now, I was used to his habit of watching me, though it still made me shiver.

“Thank you for breakfast,” I said softly, smiling at him when I finished. “You’re really good at making pancakes.”
His lips twitched, but his eyes sparkled with amusement. “What makes you think I made them?”
I frowned in confusion. “Didn’t you? I mean, you-”

“I don’t know where you got that idea, Aurora,” he interrupted, his tone turning cold and sharp. “But I hate to disappoint you -I don’t go out of my way to please anyone.”
His words stung, the harshness cutting deeper than I expected. What had 1 said to set him off? Even if he hadn’t made the breakfast, did he really need to make it so clear that he wouldn’t do something like that for me?
“Good to know you enjoyed it, though,” he added, his voice softer now. “I’ll be sure to let the café know your review.”
I sighed, unsure how to respond. Instead, we sat in silence, the tension between us palpable. My gaze drifted to his plate, and I noticed he’d barely touched his food. He always lectured me about my eating habits, yet he was no better.
“Don’t you like eating?” I asked, breaking the tension.
“I don’t,” he responded curtly.
“Why not?” I pressed curiously. “I’ve noticed you always eat so little whenever you ask me to eat with you. Sometimes, you don’t eat at all. Did you even touch the food I left for you back then?”
He chuckled, slipping into his playful self. “I didn’t know you were observing me so often, love.”
“When everyone is eager to kill you, you learn to be cautious about how you eat,” he said, his tone serious.
“Why would anyone want to kill you?” I asked, confused.
“Someday, Aurora. You’ll understand,” he said dismissively.
“You’re a nice person, yes, a bit temperamental but still. If someone’s after your life, you should inform the police,” I persisted.
He laughed darkly, the sound almost mocking. “Nice? Believe me, love, I’m anything but nice,” he said, his eyes locking onto mine.
“Why would you say that? I think you’re nice. Sure, you get angry sometimes, which makes you seem scary, but you’re still a good person,” I argued with a smile.
“Don’t be mistaken, Aurora. I’m only ‘nice‘ to you,” he said coldly.
“I need to leave for work now,” he informed me, standing from his chair.
“Alright,” I replied awkwardly, rising as well. He walked over to me and placed a small kiss on my lips, surprising me. I hadn’t expected him to be affectionate.
“Don’t open the door for strangers, and let me know if you go out with Layla,” he ordered, pulling away from the kiss. I nodded, recovering from my shock.
I watched him leave the room before heading to the mirror. My reflection startled me–not only was my hair a mess, but something else caught my attention. My cheek had no wound. I was certain I’d felt a sting on my jaw yesterday, yet there wasn’t a single mark. Had I imagined it?
I arrived at Deville Hospital to meet Layla, who was waiting in the corridor. When I’d called her earlier, she mentioned she couldn’t meet up because she was spending time with her father, who was starting chemotherapy. I decided to join her for

support and to finally meet her dad.
“You didn’t really have to come, Rory,” she said, pulling me into a hug.
“But I wanted to.” I replied with a smile, which she returned.
“Come on, let’s go,” she said, leading me down the hall.
“You know, Mr. Thane moved my dad here,” she informed me as we walked. I smiled at the thought–so much for him insisting he wasn’t nice.
“They have expert doctors specializing in lung cancer here, so I’m hopeful my dad will get better soon,” she whispered, glancing back at me with a hopeful eyes. I squeezed her hand in comfort as we reached the VIP room.

Layla opened the door to reveal a man who was the spitting image of her, sitting up in bed. A doctor was in the room but left with a polite nod as we entered.
“Layla, you’re here,” her father greeted, smiling warmly.
“Did you miss me, Dad?” she teased, walking over to him.
“As if I’d ever admit that,” he scoffed, though his smile lingered.
Layla sat by his bedside while I stood awkwardly. His eyes shifted to me, and he smiled warmly.
“I almost forgot. Dad, this is my friend Aurora,” Layla said, gesturing toward me.
“Good day, Mr Smith.” I greeted politely, returning his smile.
His eyes twinkled as he extended a hand toward mine, pulling me into a nearby chair. “Layla talks about you all the time,” he said, chuckling.
“Dad! You’re embarrassing me!” Layla exclaimed, crossing her arms with mock annoyance.
I laughed lightly envying their relationship. Despite his illness, Layla had a way of lifting his spirits. It was clear they were each other’s anchor–a perfect picture of family, something I’d never truly experienced.
“It’s not embarrassing if it’s true,” her father replied with a huff. “Besides, I should give her proper recognition. She’s not just your friend but also your former employer’s girlfriend,” he added, making my eyes widen. I turned to glare at Layla.
“Dad!” Layla groaned, embarrassed. She glanced between me and her father.
“What did I say now?” he asked, feigning innocence.
“I don’t know what Layla told you, but I’m not his girlfriend,” I clarified, still glaring at her.
“I never said she was his girlfriend, Dad! I just told you they lived together,” Layla corrected, throwing me an apologetic look.
“That’s basically the same thing. Why would they live together if they weren’t in a relationship or at least related? I don’t understand how young people do things these days. When I was…”
I zoned out as Mr. Smith continued to talk, his words hitting me harder than I wanted to admit. He was right—we were essentially living together, and yet I had no idea where I stood in Kaiden’s life, or if I even had a place in it.
When Kaiden had “bought” me, I’d assumed he had ulterior motives–using me as a sex worker or turning me into some kind of slave. But it wasn’t that at all. Could it really be that he’d saved me just to protect me from my father?
“Are you still with us, Rory?” Layla asked, pulling me out of my thoughts. I blinked and looked at her and her father, both of

whom were staring at me with concern.
“Are you okay, honey?” Mr. Smith asked gently, worry clear in his tone.
I nodded quickly. “Yes, I’m fine,” I replied, forcing a reassuring smile.
“You zoned out for quite a while. What were you thinking so hard about?” Layla asked, her brow furrowed.

“It’s nothing, Layla,” I said softly, brushing off her concern. Then I turned to her father. “It was really nice meeting you, Mr. Smith. I should be heading home now, but I promise to visit again.”
“It was lovely meeting you too, Aurora,” he said warmly.
“Let me see you out,” Layla offered, standing up, but I waved her off. Still, being as stubborn as she was, she ignored me and followed me to the hallway.
“I’m sorry about my dad. He can be a little too talkative sometimes,” she said apologetically.
“At least now I know where you get it from,” I teased, making her grin sheepishly.
“I need to get going. I didn’t inform Kaiden I was stepping like he ordered me to,” I said.
“Alright, bye then. I wouldn’t want Mr. Thane to send an army to track you down,” she joked.
I chuckled before pulling her into a quick hug and heading out of the ward.
I decided to stop by and check on Dr. Hall. I hadn’t exactly liked how we’d parted last time.
I knocked on his office door but heard no response. Gripping the doorknob, I began to open it, but before I could, the door swung open on its own.
Standing before me was a tall man with striking emerald–green eyes but there was something unsettling about him.
“You must be Alpha Kaiden’s mate,” he said with a smile that felt anything but friendly. If anything, it looked creepy.
Alpha Kaiden’s mate?
“Excuse me?” I asked, unable to hide my unease and confusion.
Instead of explaining, he extended his hand for a handshake. “The name’s Owen. I’m Dr. Hall’s cousin,” he said, his eerie smile never faltering. His gaze seemed to pierce through me, making me uncomfortable.
I hesitated, my instincts screaming at me not to take his hand. When I didn’t, his hand lingered awkwardly in the air before he finally withdrew it, his expression souring.
“Didn’t Alpha Kaiden teach you that it’s rude not to return a polite greeting?” he said, irritation clear in his voice.
I ignored his comment. “It seems Dr. Hall isn’t here, so I’ll be on my way,” I said dismissively, turning to leave.
As if on cue, Dr. Hall appeared behind him. “Little Aurora, what brings you here?” he asked with a smile, but it wasn’t the warm smile I was used to.
“I was in the hospital and thought I’d stop by to check on you,” I explained, glancing uneasily between the two men. “You did well to visit. Come on inside,” he said, stepping aside to hold the door open for me.
Normally, I wouldn’t have thought twice about entering Dr. Hall’s office, but something about the situation felt wrong. couldn’t shake the unease I felt around Owen, and now, even Dr. Hall’s presence made me uncomfortable.

“Sorry, Dr. Hall, but I really need to get home. Kaiden’s waiting for me,” I lied, forcing a stiff smile.

“That’s fine,” he said, stepping back. I waved briefly before hurrying away, their intense gazes burning into my back as I left.
I exited the hospital quickly and hailed a cab, only feeling a sense of relief once I was safely inside.
