Chapter 16

“It’s been a while, Dr. Hall, hasn’t it?” I asked, my eyes glinting with mischief.

He growled low in his throat but kept his composure, knowing full well he couldn’t harm me even if he tried–not with his beloved wife in my custody.

“What do you want now?” he snapped, his tone firm despite the anger blazing in his eyes. “I didn’t say anything to Aurora or anyone else.”

I smiled darkly, recalling the werewolf I’d seen leaving the hospital as I arrived. I had covered Aurora to ensure she went unnoticed, though it hardly mattered. I had already committed the stranger’s face to memory, intending to deal with him later. Staying close to Aurora was no longer a choice; the pull to be near her had grown too strong to resist.

“Are you absolutely certain you said nothing, Dr. Hall?” I asked, my voice dripping with menace as I stood and approached his desk with deliberate slowness. I didn’t miss the flicker of fear in his expression. It only widened my smile.

“Alpha, I-

Before he could finish, I seized him by his tie and yanked him up from his chair. His eyes squeezed shut, bracing for the attack he clearly expected. I smirked. Did he truly think I’d let him off that easily?

“You know I don’t like repeating myself, Dr. Hall,” I warned, glaring into his face.

His eyes snapped open, meeting mine. “I didn’t tell anybody,” he insisted, his voice steady but desperate.

“Hmm… I find that hard to believe,” I said, my tone laced with mockery. “I saw a werewolf leaving this hospital, one carrying your scent. That means he was in this office, close to you. Care to explain?”

“What? He’s my cousin!” Dr. Hall blurted, his voice climbing in pitch. “I didn’t say anything to him. He only came to visit. He doesn’t even live in the around here!”

I hummed thoughtfully, an idea forming in my mind.

“Please, don’t hurt him,” he begged, the fear now palpable in his voice. “He knows nothing about your mate. And as for Aurora… I care for her like she’s my own daughter. I would never endanger her life.”

My smirk deepened. “I don’t care what you think she is to you, Dr. Hall. I won’t risk her safety. And as for your cousin…” I leaned in, my smile darkening. “It’s unfortunate he happened to see me with her. He has to go.”

“That wasn’t the deal!” Dr. Hall exploded. “I treated your mate, as you demanded. I kept your secret. You swore to let my wife go and not harm any of my family!”

I let go of his collar, letting him collapse back into his chair. My smirk lingered as I straightened. “Did I promise not to touch your family? I don’t recall that. I only said your wife would be freed if you complied.”

“And I did!” he shouted, his voice raw with frustration.

I leaned back in his chair, propping my feet on his desk, and smiled smugly. “Yes, you did. But your cousin….” I trailed off, savoring the way his face crumpled.

“Please, Alpha. Don’t hurt him,” he begged, his arrogance crumbling into desperation. “He’s like a son to me.”

“Oh, I won’t kill him,” I said with a cruel smile. “At least… not yet.”

I rose from the chair, enjoying the pitiful look etched on his face. “You’ll have your wife back by the end of the day,” I said

casually, watching relief wash over him.

If only he knew the truth. His cousin would replace his wife in my custody or perhaps I’d kill them both. It all depended on

my mood.

“Thank you, Alpha Kaiden,” Dr. Hall said, his face lighting up with a smile. I didn’t bother responding, simply heading for the door. His voice, however, stopped me in my tracks.

“Before I forget, the reason for Aurora’s trauma was her mother’s death, he added.

I spun around, glaring at him. “Don’t I already know that, Dr. Hall?”

He shook his head, undeterred. “Perhaps, but I doubt you know the details. The so–called ‘animal attack that killed her mother? Aurora described it as a wolf–or some kind of monster as she called it but according to her describe, I suspect it was a wolf.” He explained.

“You’re saying a wolf killed her mother?” I asked, my voice hardening.

He nodded. “Yes Alpha. You might want to find out more yourself. She isn’t particularly open with me, but perhaps the be with you–or better yet, with Ryker,” he added with a pointed look.

My chest tightened at the mention of the wolf who had caused her pain. The urge to avenge her was overwhelming, but without more information, I was powerless to act.

Dr. Hall’s next words, however, ignited a different fury. “Still, I can’t help but wonder how someone as sweet as her ended up mated to you. Didn’t the Moon Goddess have someone calmer in mind? Like Ryker, maybe?”

Before I knew it, my claws had pierced his neck.

“I’m sure, as a doctor, you’re aware of how easily I could end your life right now,” I said softly.

He nodded, his breathing shallow.

“Good,” I murmured. “The next time you forget your place, I won’t hesitate to remind you. And believe me, you won’t survive to regret it.”

I let go, watching him slump back into his chair, gasping for breath. Without another word, I turned and left his office Aurora was pacing just outside, her restlessness evident. She stopped when she saw me.

“Can I go in now?” she asked softly, her voice soothing my simmering rage.

“No,” I said firmly. “We’re going home.”

She blinked, surprised. “But why?”

I paused mid–step, her question tugging at me. Anyone else would have earned my wrath for questioning me, but with her. I forced myself to remain calm.

“Your therapy session is over. You don’t need him anymore–you already know how to speak,” I said, my tone steadier un i expected. Her presence weakened me in ways I couldn’t explain.

“Okay,” she replied, though her eyes hinted at unspoken questions. She was learning to read my moods, it seemed

As we walked to the car, I reminded myself of my responsibilities. I needed to check on the pack and present Greg’s body which was in Ryker’s custody to maintain order. My absence had delayed everything so I needed to it as soon as possible.

Once we were settled in the car, I glanced at her. “Are you hungry?”

“Not really,” she said, but I knew she was lying. I didn’t press her–it wasn’t the time. I would just buy food for us on my way

back. 

Starting the car,My hand instantly found its way to her thigh, brushing against her skin as her heartbeat quickened. The act wasn’t just for her, It helped ease the tension building within me, a pressure that grew stronger with the full moon approaching in just a week. I knew I should stay away from her during that time for her own safety.

My thoughts were interrupted when she pushed my hand away and shifted her legs out of reach.

“You don’t want me touching you?” I asked, forcing my anger to stay in check. She was my mate–I had every right to touch her. Yet I reminded myself that she wasn’t a werewolf. She couldn’t feel the pull the way I did.

“You have a girlfriend, Aurora said, her voice quiet as she turned to look out of the window.

I smirked, suppressing the irritation bubbling within me. She was both right and wrong. Ariel wasn’t my girlfriend, but she was… there. With the full moon approaching, I needed to keep her on my side, only she knew how to manage the chaos it would bring Another reason I still kept her around.

“Is that the only reason, Aurora?” I asked, my tone deceptively calm.

“Yes. I don’t want to be the reason for your fallout with her, she said, still staring at the passing scenery.

I nodded. “So, you like me touching you then?” I asked, already knowing the truth. Her reactions betrayed her every time.

“No, I don’t, she lied, her voice steady but her heartbeat quickening. I’m sorry for allowing you to cross boundaries.”

I didn’t respond immediately, a smirk tugging at my lips as I pulled the car over, stopping a short distance from the club. 1 turned to her, the glint in my eyes dark and teasing, as I placed a hand firmly on her thigh. Her sharp intake of breath was immediate. 

“So, you’re saying you hate it when I touch you?” I asked, letting my hand slide just a bit higher, my gaze never leaving hers.

Her lips trembled as she bit down nervously, a habit of hers that always ignited something feral in me. She didn’t respond. and I leaned in closer, brushing my fingers along the side of her face. She tilted into my touch, her eyes fluttering shut.

When she leaned in, expecting me to claim her lips, I paused, forcing myself to stop. The last time I kissed her, the thought of her consumed me for an entire week. Instead, I placed a slow, deliberate kiss on her cheek, then another, trailing soft kisses across her face.

Her eyes opened when I pulled back, her gaze filled with desire that matched my own.

“And here I thought you hated my touch,” I teased, watching her cheeks flush a deep red.

Embarrassment washed over her, but she said nothing

“Stay in the car and don’t come out until I’m back. Do you understand?” I asked, my voice serious.

She nodded, her lips parting slightly as if to protest, but she stopped herself

I released her and stepped out, walking into the casino where chaos and revelry thrived.

Alpha Ryker’s voice called out the second I stepped inside. The room was packed, mostly with werewolves indulging in drinks and women–many of them leaving their mates at home for such nights. Humans mingled here too, oblivious to the true nature of the company they kept. Some werewolves preferred human partners for one–night stands, but I didn’t care about their choices as long as they paid their dues.

“You finally decided to show up,” Ryker said, grinning as he approached. “And here I thought you didn’t want to see Rory but you seemed to be enjoy her company for the past three days.”

“Aurora. Her name is Aurora, not Rory,” I corrected, my tone sharp.

His grin widened knowingly. “Oh? Possessive now, are we? Didn’t think you had it in you. Maybe I should really steal your mate away.”

A growl rumbled from my chest, low and threatening. He raised his hands in mock surrender, a smug look on his face.

“Relax, Alpha. I’m just messing with you. I might be mateless, but I’m no thief,” he said, his tone light as he chuckled.

Ryker was mateless, and it wasn’t by choice. His mate had died, and he hadn’t been granted the rare blessing of another by the Moon Goddess.

“How about Greg’s body?” I asked, steering the conversation away from sensitive territory. Ryker’s face shifted into a grin, though his expression carried a hint of pride in his handiwork.

“He’s in the refrigerator,” he said, turning to lead the way.

Why store bodies there? It was simple–traitors like Greg, or rival wolves who dared to cross me, were kept half–dead in my office refrigerator. It served as a warning and a way I used to vent my rage. I didn’t just kill them outright. Instead, I kept them on ice, prolonging their suffering until I had the time to finish the job. Sometimes I’d display their heads for the pack to remind them of the cost of betrayal. However since I was busy. Ryker took charge of that.

Ryker opened the refrigerator, revealing Greg’s body. Curled up and battered, his corpse bore deep claw marks. Ryker had clearly taken his time. 

“You did well,” I said simply, my approval evident.

“Thanks, Kaiden. I left the beheading for you. Figured you’d want the honors,” he said with a grin.

“Tomorrow, we’ll show the pack who caused our losses. Make sure everyone is there,” I ordered. “Including Ariel”

Ryker’s expression shifted to one of curiosity. “Cot it. But who’ll stay with Rory tomorrow?”

“It’s Aurora,” I corrected, my tone firm. “Layla will stay with her. She won’t be alone.”

He nodded, closing the refrigerator as we exited the room. Greetings of “Alpha” echoed around us as we stepped into the open

air.

“See you tomorrow,” Ryker said, pausing at the club’s entrance.

I stopped and turned back to him. “Look into Aurora’s mother’s death. I want every detail. Report back as soon as you know something.”

“Yes, Alpha,” he replied without hesitation.

I headed back to the car without another word. Aurora was asleep in the passenger seat, her head tilted uncomfortably against the window. A soft chuckle escaped me. If only she understood the danger that came with being near me, she wouldn’t sleep so easily. But as long as I lived, no harm would come to her. 

I adjusted her seat to prevent her from straining her neck, watching her peaceful face for a moment before starting the car.

As the engine roared to life, my focus shifted. I had a new goal, finding the werewolf who had killed Aurora’s mother. Whoever they were, they wouldn’t just die–they’d suffer for every ounce of pain they had caused her.
