Chapter 15

Aurora

“Are you ready?” Kaiden asked, his eyes scanning my outfit as I stood in front of him. We talked more often now–yes, you heard me correctly, talked. Our relationship had improved since the early days when we barely exchanged words. These days, he made it easier to forget about Ryker, who had been a constant presence ever since I saw him in the hospital three days ago.

“Where are you both going?” Ariel’s voice came from the doorway. Yes, Ariel was still around, and yes, they were still together. That made me feel like the ultimate relationship wrecker because, despite their relationship, Kaiden spent the majority of his time with me. Sure, we said it was just friendship, but there was no denying the undercurrent of something more. Ariel, for all her presence, often felt like the third wheel.

“Hospital,” Kaiden replied without looking at her. She nodded, stepping fully into the room, already dressed.

“I’m going with you,” she declared, moving to stand in front of me, effectively blocking Kaiden’s view. I turned away, not wanting to show how her words stung, as she slid her hand onto his thigh like a claim.

“Mmm…I’ll be waiting outside,” I murmured, leaving the apartment without looking back. I walked to his car and waited by the passenger door, trying to calm my emotions. Kaiden was coming with me to my session with Dr. Hall today–for reasons I didn’t fully understand. I knew my way around the hospital and could’ve taken a cab, but according to Ryker, it wasn’t safe. They insisted it was about “protecting” me, though from what, I still didn’t know.

“Let’s go,” Kaiden said as he approached, pulling me from my spiraling thoughts. I glanced around, confused not to see Ariel.

“She decided to stay back,” he added, noticing my expression. His tone was casual, like it wasn’t worth discussing. I didn’t press further–it wasn’t my business. He slid into the driver’s seat, and I quickly rounded to the other side and got in.

“Seatbelt,” he commanded. I immediately pulled it across my chest, clicking it into place. I glanced at him and noticed, as usual, that he wasn’t wearing his. But I wasn’t brave enough to call him out on it.

“I can’t know what you’re thinking if you don’t talk, Aurora,” he said, breaking the silence with a firm yet gentle tone.

“You’ve been doing fine reading my mind,” I retorted before I could stop myself. My hands flew to cover my mouth, shocked by my own boldness. I braced for him to snap at me, but instead, his lips curled into a small smile.

“Someone’s grown bold,” he teased, glancing at me before refocusing on the road. “But no, I can’t always read your mind. You’re just tend to reveal so much emotions.”

“I didn’t realize my face was such an open book,” I muttered under my breath, but of course, he heard.

“It’s not your face,” he replied with a smirk. “I’m just a good reader. Nice to know my money’s not going to waste, after all.”

His words stung a little, making me feel small. But I quickly reminded myself that it was just his nature—he didn’t mean it maliciously.

“What? Are you mad?” he asked, his voice sharper, his gaze cutting to me briefly. i shook my head in response.

“Words, Aurora. Use them,” he growled, his tone softening just slightly.

“No, I’m not mad,” I said more clearly, though I avoided looking at him. Talking still felt unnatural to me, like trying on someone else’s skin, but I was proud to be speaking again at all.

He didn’t respond, and the silence stretched between us until I felt his cold hand rest on my thigh. My breath hitched, the contrast of warmth and coolness shocking.

nerves coiled tightly as I fought to focus on something–anything–other than the warmth spreading through me. He acted like he wasn’t doing anything at all, his expression unreadable.

The ride felt excruciatingly long, but eventually, we arrived at the hospital.

The second the car stopped at the hospital, I bolted out, my heart still racing. Behind me, Kaiden’s wicked laughter echoed, and I felt heat rise to my cheeks. I shouldn’t have liked his touch–it was wrong on so many levels. He was in a relationship. Yet, despite knowing better, I couldn’t stop craving it.

“Aren’t you running anymore?” he teased as he joined me at the side of the car. His grin was infuriating, and my embarrassment only deepened. I turned to head inside, but before I could take more than a few steps, Kaiden grabbed my wrist and pulled me close, his lips mere inches from mine.

My breath hitched, my heart pounding frantically. “Kaiden,” I whispered, trying to wriggle free. Realizing where we were–in public, no less–I panicked. “We’re at the hospital! Let go!”

“Stop struggling,” he said coldly, his voice low and dangerous. His grip tightened just enough to make me pause. His eyes, though so close to mine, weren’t focused on me. They were locked on something–or someone–behind me.

“Aurora,” he whispered in my ear, his tone sending shivers down my spine, “if you don’t stop squirming, I’ll kiss you right here and now to make you behave.”

The thought of him kissing me sent a confusing mix of dread and longing through me. Reluctantly, I stopped struggling, though my mind flashed back to the last time he kissed me. I quickly pushed the memory away.

“But we’re in a hospital,” I protested, my voice barely audible.

Kaiden’s lips curled into a sinister smile. “I own you, Aurora,” he said, his voice dripping with possessiveness. “I could fuck you here if I wanted.”

His words made my stomach twist. It was degrading, but also undeniable–I was his. I’d been sold to him like property, and no matter how much I hated it, there was no escaping that truth.

“You belong to me,” he continued, his tone softening yet somehow even more dangerous. “You’re mine.”

And what terrified me most was that, deep down, I didn’t hate hearing him say it.

Kaiden finally released me, though his hand slid down to take mine as he led me inside. His grip was firm but not harsh, his thumb idly massaging my palm as we walked through the hospital halls. I didn’t know what I was doing with him anymore- or why I even allowed myself to feel the way I did.

When we reached Dr. Hall’s office, Kaiden greeted him with a dark glint in his eyes, one that immediately set me on edge.

“Good day, Dr. Hall,” Kaiden said, his voice deceptively polite.

“Alpha Kaiden,” Dr. Hall spat, the usual warmth in his expression replaced with open hostility. My brow furrowed. Alpha? Was that his name? I remembered Ryker calling him that once, but I thought it was just a nickname.

The tension between them was palpable as they engaged in a silent, glaring contest.

“Hello, Dr. Hall,” I said softly, hoping to break whatever strange standoff was happening. My voice seemed to work, as Dr. Hall’s attention shifted to me.

“Nice to see you again, little Aurora,” he said, his tone instantly softening as he gestured for me to sit. I took the chair in front of his desk, and Kaiden settled into the one beside me, his expression unreadable.

“I see you brought your boyfriend today,” Dr. Hall remarked, his gaze flicking between the two of us.

“What? No, he’s not my boyfriend!” I blurted, my eyes widening as I turned to Kaiden, who didn’t even flinch at the

misunderstanding. “He’s my guardian,” 1 added, my voice trailing off

“Hmm,” Dr. Hall hummed, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “That’s not how he described himself.”

“Can you stop wasting our time and get to the point?” Kaiden snapped, his irritation cutting through the room like a blade. “Whatever she is to me is none of your business.”

Dr. Hall’s expression darkened, but he forced a tight smile. “Kindly excuse us so we can begin the session,” he said, his words clipped.

“And why would I do that?” Kaiden countered, leaning back in his chair, completely unbothered.

“So she can feel comfortable,” Dr. Hall explained through gritted teeth.

Kaiden smirked. “As you can see, your patient is recovering just fine. She doesn’t need your help anymore.”

“Alpha-”

“Leave us, Aurora,” Kaiden cut in sharply, his voice making my stomach drop. Weren’t we in the here for my therapy session? I thought trying to process his words.

“I said leave,” Kaiden barked, louder this time.

Instinctively, I obeyed, rushing out of the office and closing the door behind me. I stood in the hallway, pacing, my thoughts swirling. What unfinished business did they have? And why would someone with such bad blood with Kaiden be hired as my therapist?
