Waking up to find Ariel and Kaiden at the dining table was not how I planned to start my morning. My mind was already spinning from their behavior last night, and each thought felt like it squeezed my chest tighter. Watching Ariel act all affectionate with him made me feel even worse. What I didn’t understand was why I felt drawn to someone I barely knew.

“You’re up.” Ariel said, smiling at me, though it didn’t reach her eyes. I wondered if my face showed how little sleep I got, as my restless thoughts had kept me awake all night. I’d only managed to fall asleep early this morning, getting maybe two hours at best.

I gave her a tired smile and walked to the dining table, still remembering how tense our last encounter had been. Pulling a chair close to Kaiden, I sat down. Even though he was intimidating, I knew him better than Ariel, who was still a mystery to me. I couldn’t miss the sharp glare she sent my way for sitting closer to him. I wondered how long she planned to stay. She had every right to be here, while I had none–because I was nothing to him.

“Get her some food, Ariel,” Kaiden commanded, breaking the heavy silence. Ariel pretended not to hear him, focusing on her meal.

“I said, get her some food, Ariel!” he snapped, his anger making me flinch. Ariel, however, didn’t even blink, as if she was used to his outbursts. Instead, she looked up with a chilling smile.

“Oh, were you talking to me?” she said mockingly, pausing to glance at me with disdain. “There’s nothing for her. I figured she’d sleep all day like some kind of Sleeping Beauty. Well, go make something yourself, or are you too helpless for that?” Her tone was sharp and taunting, her glare burning through me.

I bit my lip, fighting the sudden urge to slap

which shocked me since I usually avoided confrontation.

“Don’t test my patience, Ariel,” Kaiden said, his voice icy. “Are you saying you made nothing for Aurora?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying, baby,” she replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “You don’t expect me to cook for her too, do you? She’s already freeloading here–she might as well make herself useful and cook dinner for everyone instead of being completely useless.” Her words were filled with venom.

“That’s fine,” Kaiden said coldly, pushing his plate away. “She can’t eat this garbage anyway, and I can’t stomach it either.”

I glanced at the food. It looked edible, but I couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or genuinely disliked it. From what little I’d learned about him, he didn’t seem like a big eater anyway.

“You’re rejecting my food because of her?” Ariel snapped, rising from her seat and pointing angrily at me. Kaiden stayed calm, his face unreadable. I should’ve felt happy that he defended me, but instead, guilt gnawed at me. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was causing problems between them.

“Yes, I am,” Kaiden snapped, his voice sharp and unyielding. “Until you learn to treat her like a human, you won’t enjoy this place. If you can’t handle that, then leave.” He pushed his chair back, standing to leave, but Ariel’s voice stopped him in his tracks.

“That’s exactly why I hate her,” she hissed bitterly. “She’s nothing but a disgusting, weak human.”

Before I could process her words, Ariel was slammed against the wall, Kaiden’s hand hovering dangerously close to her neck. I froze in shock before rushing to pull him away. My hands tugged at his arms, but he was too strong, his rage making him unyielding. His eyes burned crimson, wild and terrifying, as if he truly intended to kill her.

“Please, stop, Kaiden!” I yelled, surprising even myself. My outburst seemed to break through his anger, and he slowly released her. Ariel collapsed to the floor, coughing and clutching at her reddened neck.

Kaiden turned to me, his expression shifting from rage to a strange calm. “And here I thought you’d never raise your around me,” he said with a faint smile, as if nothing had happened.

He stepped closer, but I instinctively backed away, the image of him choking Ariel fresh in my mind. Suddenly, my dislike for her was replaced with pity.

His jaw tightened at my reaction. “I told you I wouldn’t hurt you,” he snapped, his voice sharp with frustration.

Behind him, Ariel laughed darkly, her voice cutting through the tension. “If she’s this scared of you now, imagine what she’ll do when she finds out what you really are.”

Her words left me confused.

What did she mean by what he really is?

“Shut up, Ariel,” Kaiden growled, his focus still on me.

She smirked, clearly enjoying the chaos. “I’ll be here when she finds out. Or better yet, when you kill her in bed,” she taunted, her voice dripping with malice.

Her comment made my cheeks burn, the thought of intimacy with Kaiden leaving me flustered. Kaiden’s jaw clenched tighter, his restraint visibly wearing thin. Ariel, unfazed, walked over to him, running her tongue along his earlobe while keeping her eyes locked on mine.

“I’ll be waiting for you in bed, baby,” she purred, her voice low but loud enough to ensure I heard. Then she turned and sashayed toward their room, her hips swaying deliberately.

I stood frozen until I felt the cold touch of Kaiden’s hand on my face, pulling my attention back to him. He was so close I could feel his breath against my skin. His piercing blue eyes held mine, his thumb gently tracing the curve of my cheek.

“You’ll respond when I speak to you, Aurora. Do you understand?” His tone was firm, yet there was a softness beneath it. 

I swallowed hard, nodding quickly.

“Starting now,” he added, his voice leaving no room for argument.

“Yes, sir,” I said automatically, then corrected myself at his growl. “Yes, Kaiden.”

“Good,” he murmured, his tone shifting to something darker, more seductive. His fingers brushed down to my lips, slipping one into my mouth. I didn’t know what he was doing, but I couldn’t stop the way my tongue instinctively moved against his finger. His eyes darkened, and the intensity of his gaze left me breathless.

“You don’t know what you’re doing to me, Aurora,” he admitted, his voice low and rough. “I want to bend you over and take you right here. But I’m scared I’ll break you.”

His words sent a shiver through me, and I felt my legs weaken. Any fear I had earlier seemed to vanish, replaced by a desire I didn’t fully understand.

“You’re so innocent,” he added softly, his hand brushing over my hair before pulling his finger from my mouth.

“Let’s go eat,” he said suddenly, his demeanor shifting back to something more casual.

“What?” I asked dumbly, still trying to process what had just happened.

He laughed, a sound I hadn’t heard from him before, light and oddly pleasant. “Maybe not so innocent after all,” he teased, and I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment.
