Elara

I hid in a corner, watching the witches leave the meeting room slowly. What was I thinking defending Kaiden like that? I came out of my hiding place, dragging my feet back to the hall as I prepared mentally for the screams.

“What’s wrong with you, Elara?” Michael yelled as I walked into my sister’s room after the meeting. He was sitting next to Evie. She didn’t spare me a glance, her body emitting with fire.

“What do you mean by that?” I asked innocently with scrunched face, playing with a strand of my hair. Sge raised her eyes slowly, glaring at me with a flushed face.

“You know what he means, Elara. You stood against us earlier because of that beast.” She stated with calmness, that was only a facade.

“He’s a werewolf, Elara!” She screamed, throwing her hands in the air in frustration. I squeezed my eyes shut, backing away from her outburst. I bite my lips nervously, fumbling with my finger. Evie could be scary when she was upset.

“It’s only fair we help him.” I mumbled in

esponse, staring down at my fingers.

“Help him?” My mom snapped, walking into the room. I arched my head to the creaking sound of the door in surprise. Hadn’t she gone to bed already?

“Mom.” I smiled awkwardly, scratching the back of my head. She glared at me, standing in the front of me.

“Why did you do that, Elara?” She demanded in authority.

“I just wanted to help him, Mom.” I responded honestly, swallowing the lump in my throat.

“Do you know what you did, Elara?” She asked with an edge in her voice.

“She obviously doesn’t, Mom.” Evie mumbled in response, walking to her.

I blinked my eyes, “What did I do that’s so wrong?” I glanced at them both in confusion.

“You’re a sweet girl, Elara but you can’t show kindness to such beast.” My mom said with a sigh as Evie rubbed her back.

“Everybody now doubts your ability to lead us.” My mom announced in frustration, “Just because of your careless actions!”

I flinched back as she raised her hand up to the air. She hissed in angers dropping her hands down to her side, and sitting on the arm chair.

“I never wanted to be the Coven leader in the first place, but the stupid moon had other plans.” I mumbled with in boldness, flickering my eyes to meet theirs.

“Elara!” Evie snapped angrily, storming towards me, but Michael held her back, calming her down.

“What?” I shot back fiercely shooting her daggers. “You said the stupid moon chose me, yet I’m not allowed to utter a word in our meeting?” I asked sarcastically, chuckling at the irony.

“Let me go.” She snapped at Michael, snapping his arms off my body.

“No one stopped you from talking” Evie stated with a pointed look, “You chose to be mute, and now I know why. You’re better off with your mouth closed.”

“Evie…” My mom trailed off shaking her head.

“Don’t Mom. I’m sick of babying her. She needs to understand the weight of her words” She snapped, before turning her gaze back at her.

“You said you wanted to help him right?” She asked with a sinister look in her eyes, “How exactly are you to do that, Elara? You don’t know any spells.”

I swallowed, staring at the floor. Her words cut deep, but it was the bitter truth. I couldn’t possibly help a person when I’m powerless. I didn’t know any spells, and couldn’t even channel my healing abilities. I’m just a witch by birth.

“You’re just a naive girl who knows nothing about the world. What do you think will happen after breaking that curse?” She asked rhetorically, pacing around the room.

“Do you think he’s just going to thank us?” She added mocking with wrinkled face,

“He won’t attack…” I countered in a small tone. I wasn’t convinced by my words remembering how the hatred in his eyes. He hated witches as much as we hated him, but I didn’t know he’s story.

“He won’t?” She chuckled, snapping her neck to me. “You’re a lot more stupid than I thought!” She scoffed.

“Enough, Genevieve.” My mother reprimanded jolting from the chair.

“She’s your sister, Ginny.” She said, glancing between us. “You shouldn’t be too harsh in her.”

“She’s not just my sister, Mom but the future of this Coast.” She pointed out, turning to the other direction. “I’m to guide her, and that’s exactly what I’m trying to do.” She defended, sitting on the chair.

“Elara-” Michael began, but I glared at him, shaking my head. Each time Evie snapped at me, he plays the advocate, trying to resolve our differences.

“You’re right, I’m naive and stupid, but at least not as heartless as you are.” I retorted, staring at her fiercely.

With that, I spun around and walk out of the room. I stormed into my room, slamming the door shut. Duty, duty! It was all they cared about.

Just why didn’t the Moon choose Evie instead, and spare me all this torture?

I doubt they would actually help him. I just said the words, but it doesn’t mean they would uphold to it. However, Evie might, if I’m able to convince her.

But why was I so concern about Kaiden? He was ungrateful,yet I was still concerned about him. Was this some infatuation? Or love maybe? Falling for a man who’s mind is bitter by his lover’s death?

I couldn’t let anyone know of the true reason behind my actions, or it would be trouble. Siding with an enemy was punishable by death.
