The Seraphic showed up five years back, stopping a massive biochemical virus in its tracks. Folks saved by The Seraphic swore their silver needles were like magic, reviving the dead.
Though it could be considered an overstatement, The Seraphic’s medical skills were unquestionable. Yet, The Seraphic’s age, appearance, and gender–every detail about them–was cloaked in secrecy.
Just a few days ago, The Seraphic was spotted in the west side slums of Janivielle. But they vanished in a flash, before anyone could get close.
Shane straightened his gold–rimmed glasses, looking all classy. “I bet The Seraphic’s still hanging around the capital.”
Julius cast his fishing line, making the fish scatter. “Search the slums again. Thoroughly.”
Shane nodded. “Heard your real fiancée used to live in the slums.”
Julius was stone–faced. “What’s your point?”
The stories about Julius were often over the top, but they mostly hit the mark. His mood swings, ruthlessness, and cold heart were all too real.
Even though they grew up together and Shane’s the older one by three years, he knew better than to mess with Julius. He just grinned and said, “Nothing.”

Feeling a bit peckish, Quiana asked the housekeeper, Heather, in a lazy tone, “Got anything to eat?”
Heather seized Quiana up and judged in her heart, ‘She looks cool but with an attitude. She thought moving into the Larson residence would make her one of them–she should really check herself!
Heather looked at Quiana with clear disgust and fake surprise, saying, “Oh, forgot we had an extra today. Didn’t make your breakfast.”
Quiana’s eyes narrowed, spotting the tray in Heather’s hand. It had a bowl of ginseng porridge and some minced meat.
Heather noticed and smirked, “Ms. Larson’s dog’s been picky lately, so we made this for it.” She paused, then added, “But I guess it’s human–grade too. If you’re really hungry, Ms. Levine, it’s all yours.”
The message was clear–Quiana ranked as high as a pet at the Larson residence. This was outright defiance.
Quiana clicked her tongue, hands in her pockets, as she strolled by, casually tripping Heather.
“Ah!” Heather lost her balance and face–planted, dishes shattering. Her chin hit the stairs, a tooth flying out with a splash of blood.
A scream echoed, and the servants rushed over, startled. Heather was writhing, eyes wide with disbelief as she accused, “You… you… did this on purpose!”
Quiana raised an eyebrow. “So what if I did?”
Heather’s eyes blazed. “How dare you treat me like this, I… ah!”
Before Heather could finish, Quiana had her pinned, foot on her back. Quiana leaned in, her gaze icy, her smile sinister.

“When a master disciplines a dog, it doesn’t get to choose.”
“You!” Heather’s face went white as she struggled, but Quiana’s foot felt like a ton.

Quiana’s lips curled into a cold smirk. She pressed down, reaching to push Heather’s head lower.
Heather shook her head, voice shrill. “What are you doing? Quiana, how dare you!”
Quiana pushed Heather’s face into the porridge on the floor, a low chuckle escaping, as she said calmly, “Winona’s pet eats what Winona gives, just like you. Since you’re both dogs, who cats the porridge doesn’t matter, right?”
Quiana pulled back, dusted her hands off, and shot a cold look at the other servants. Ignoring Heather’s frantic screams, Quiana left the Larson residence with a swagger, bag over her shoulder. Her exit was a statement of rebellious pride.
